We have lived here since 1986 and raised our five grown kids here. I don't think any of us will ever leave Colorado, we love it so much. Hiking in Colorado is not for the faint of heart, and you can get into trouble very quickly with the weather and elevation. But the beauty is unsurpassed. By the way there's respectable cutthroat trout fly fishing in the Blue Lakes and amazing brown and rainbow trout fishing at the East Portal of the Gunnison where you were on the river.
