What affects does Variable Cam Tuning have on emissions? Find out here....
In today’s release, Andre walks us through the effects cam tuning can have on our emissions, how we can control it and what other contributing factors can affect our emissions as well.
Andre takes us through a dyno test to measure our torque vs our inlet cam angle vs NOx. This is done by Andre stepping up the cam timing in 2 degree increments while allowing time for the NOx reading to stabilise with every adjustment - you need to allow about 5-6 seconds for this to be accurate.
After the test, Andre takes us through a break down on the results, what it tells us and where we need to consider making a sacrifice in power/torque to meet emissions standards.

That torque value is torque at the hub, correct? Which gear was used?

The torque graph is astounding. It seems to indicate that there is a tolerance band of about 35 degrees for the inlet cam timing without a change in torque. This makes a mockery of guys who say that you need to time cams to the nearest degree. Do you know what the start point of the cam timing is ie what are the opening and closing figures at your base point of zero degrees. Have you done this test at high RPM and power. Does it show the same wide tolerance

Keep in mind this is a forced induction application (Subaru STI). An NA application is probably going to be more sensitive to cam timing, but I think your general point is a good one. Don't obsess about getting things perfect where close enough is still 99% of perfect. In the design engineering world we say no design is perfect because a perfect design would take an infinite amount of time to complete.

It was at 17% throttle. Would be a bigger difference and narrower optimum window at full throttle, and higher revs.

It doesn't make a mockery at all. He's running one cam at one specific rpm at one specific throttle opening. Torque isn't affected as much by the inlet cam anyway. The exhaust cam has a far greater affect on torque. And yes 1 degree of exhaust cam timing can make a measurable difference to torque.

@@Fix_It_Again_Tony Interestingly I've found it to be the opposite: turbocharged engines are more sensitive to can timing than na. I found that turbocharged engine cam timing has huge affect on boost threshold, peak torque, peak hp, and what rpm they both peak at. Whereas na cam timing is more of a case of its either right or wrong, and making small timing adjustments are more for fine tuning.
