I lived in the Philippines during the 80's and competed with most chinese enterprises. The chinese in the country were present long before the navigators discovered the archipelago in 16th century. Philippines is under China, but Philippinos submerge themselves under America without the latter acknowledging it. China is indeed the most populous country in the world, but it's nowhere near the top 50 (I remember arounx 80) when it comes to population density, in fact they are even far behind from ASEAN country. The reason for these migrations is far away from the current topic, but just to say their population is not a reason for their migration.

This is something that puzzled me too. Back during Khmer Rouge time, they evicted everyone from Phnom Penh for example and many were massacred from year zero. I wondered how they later distributed the land again. I believe the super rich and elites who escaped the massacres gained from it and took whatever they could lay their hands on. And the many poor remained homeless or not allowed to get back their old property. There was a huge lake in Phnom Penh where many people live around one. One day the Government decided to build condominiums on it and evicted everyone from the location.
