Cambodia is increasingly looking away from the West and more towards China as it seeks partners in its economic development. Nowhere is this more evident than in the southern seaside town of Sihanoukville. Once famed for its beautiful beaches, the town has been dramatically changed by massive construction projects including many hotels and casinos. Much of the change comes as a result of the growing influence of Chinese nationals, who have reshaped the town and surrounding province with their investment and very presence. While some locals have benefited from the Chinese influx, many others say they are being left behind.

Unfortunately gambling casino is the fastest way for the Cambodia government to increase revenues. But with gambling , comes drugs and prostitution. Yes. Correct. They should have started with an EEZ. Even mother China herself would not permit large scale organized Casino.

2016, this town was nice and peaceful and beautiful as he described it. Small quaint hotels and hostels and Cambodian cafe and restaurants businesses. 2017: Things changed dramatically in such a short period. Everything Chinese. Chinese casinos, hotels, land, groceries. I wish I could make it stop but like most locals I felt helpless as it isn't my country. I hope this town goes back to the way it was or better with more support for local Cambodians and preservation of environment. I miss the old SIhanoukville.

@@BlackKnight_999 well i haven't touched that topic of mass immigration through infrastructure investment yet, but you have also raised one of the concerns. Indeed investment in general bring benefits to the country in a lot of ways. Still, sudden mass immigration has its cons, heavy pressure on resources, different culture clashes, price hike in living expenses, population imbalances in countries with different races, and political shifts in countries that are allowed to vote. China is indeed the most populous country in the world, but it's nowhere near the top 50 (I remember arounx 80) when it comes to population density, in fact they are even far behind from ASEAN country. The reason for these migrations is far away from the current topic, but just to say their population is not a reason for their migration.

And they speak different accents from the chinese singaporean right? You guys speaks a combination of hokkien, hainan, guangzhou... years ago i saw a video of a singaporean man telling a chinese worker to speak english, because she can only speaks mandarin, which is something not familiar to singaporean right? But it receive backlash from the internet. I must say, if they gonna work in another country, they have to learn the language. I used to study in Japan, I cant serve customers in Vietnamese while im in Japan right, but when the video got online, people was defending the chinese worker. I remember when i first go to night safari, the indian singaporean workers only speaks english and they cant speak any mandarin, now they speaks fluently. This is something that puzzled me too. Back during Khmer Rouge time, they evicted everyone from Phnom Penh for example and many were massacred from year zero. I wondered how they later distributed the land again. I believe the super rich and elites who escaped the massacres gained from it and took whatever they could lay their hands on. And the many poor remained homeless or not allowed to get back their old property. There was a huge lake in Phnom Penh where many people live around one. One day the Government decided to build condominiums on it and evicted everyone from the location.
