Hiking Tasmanian Wilderness - Port Davey Track

The Port Davey Track was a means to link up the Western Arthurs Traverse and South Coast Track on my Tasmanian adventure. It ended up being one of the more challenging hikes I've done, mainly due to overgrown trail and lots of mud. It was also absolutely stunning and the remoteness and isolation of the trail made for an incredible experience.

Amazing! I did the walk in 1970 but in reverse, having walked the South Coast Track to Melaleuca. In those days, the Port Davey Track was in magnificent condition; wide, beautifully graded and clear all the way. In fact it was a huge relief after the South Coast Track. The weather was sunny and dry and I don't recall any mud on that stretch although plenty on the South Coast. We took three days to Junction Creek, camping at Spring River and Crossing River. We then climbed the Western Arthurs, then out via Lake Pedder, still the jewel it was before it was drowned. Surprisingly I can still recognise the campsites at Spring River, Crossing River and Junction Creek. Certainly the interior of the walkers hut at Melaleuca is very familiar, such a haven after the South Coast Track. Thanks for the video, you are a mighty walker!

Hi Cam, Enjoyed that. Myself (73) and a buddy did the Port Davey Track in June just past. At a much more pedestrian pace than you. Much rain and a big storm on day two. Held up at Spring River for a day. Stepped off the bridge into waist deep water. Spring River had broken its banks and was flowing over the Eastern flood plain. (14.30 to 15.25 on your video). The next creek crossing (15.23) was chest deep so we were stuck for a day. Repeat of a solo walk I did thirty something years previously. Had the pleasure of spending four days with Deny King and daughter Janet and family. Great days. Enjoyed your Western Arthurs traverse. In younger days I spent a lot of time in there and around Fedder. Bit long in the tooth for those areas now. Did the O.T. two Winters back and going again next June. Looking forward to your South Coast video. Happy trails.

Wow hectic! I definitely got lucky with the weather and water levels - your experience sounds absolutely wild. I read all about Deny and the history of the settlement while in Melaleuca. Super cool you have met him!

Great video series, top job. I was “lucky” to enjoy a forced 3 night stop over in the malaleuca huts when flights were halted due to extreme weather. Was the best time just chilling and reading and the occasional walk out to the harbour before the weather closed in again. Magical part of the SW

I have so many questions!! Ranging from “did your shoes last the week” to “what do you think about when you’re out there alone?” Most importantly… “why is that water so yellow and is it safe to drink?”

Shoes were wrecked by the end of Tassie. I think about everything lol. Planning stuff, hypotheticals, thinking of shots for the video. Water is tannin stained, it’s natural and completely safe. ☺️

The track has a very interesting history. Perbaps you could include it in a future edit. Short map views also help. Great video though. Clear to understand. Hope you do Higgs to Cynthia one day.

Yeah it certainly could. It doesn’t get much traffic so the neighbouring south coast track gets all the attention!

@@CamBostock BTW, the Old River 1:100,000 map indicates that the PDT track ends, and the SCT starts, at the boat crossing rather than at Melaleuca. You must be one of very few modern walkers to complete the South Coast Track!

Great content! How did you deal with shoes/socks during water crossings? Like, did you have an extra pair of shoes that you used for getting wet?

Awesome video! I would love to know more about your story? When did you start hiking / learn to navigate unsigned and overgrown trails. I would love to do more multi day overnight hikes but not confident to do it by myself yet

I started small and worked my way up to longer + more difficult trails over the years. I think it helped living in Western Australia because most of our trails are very beginner friendly.

So for those river crossings filmed from the other side, did you cross, set up the camera, cross back and then cross again to get the shot. Also, I like you 1 second of drone (or balloon with go pro strapped to it) footage at the start of the vid.

Hey Cam just had a question about your watch looks like a Garmin Fenix of some kind, what mode do you record the long hikes on to get the most battery wise? Thanks

Just the basic hiking mode. I haven’t changed any of settings around at all on my Fenix6. I can hike for 15 hours without the battery dying and I charge every night with a battery pack.

Just noticed that when you left the Mt Rugby side of the narrows, there was only one boat there, and when you arrived on the Meleleuca side, you moored the boat there with the second boat. Please tell me you did your round trips to ensure there was a boat left on the Mt Rugby side.
