I love the two-storey room! But it’s just so weird. All those students in the UK pay an insane amount of money for a room that (in Kings at least) doesn’t allow you to cook your own meal, sometimes doesn’t have a private bathroom, is furnished with non-matching old furniture, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I did 2 summer programmes in Cambridge and I loved the university, but at my uni (Austria) I rented a flat close to uni, pay 600€ per month, 50 m2, and I have a bathroom, a kitchen, a balcony, a nice view, and my own furniture. That’s just so much more convenient.
@pigeonlove3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the furniture is not that it's old, old furniture can be marvellous. The problem with Cambridge uni's furniture is that it's cheap, uncomfortable, unhygienic and was never ever considered nice. It's an embarrassment

Do you have to change rooms every single year? Seems like a hassle and really stressful where you might end up each year, especially since tbh I'd rather stay on my own than have room mates
@pandajules4 жыл бұрын
1) Yes, you have to "change" every year, by which I mean "choose again". If you are lucky and high up on the ballot for choosing, then you might end up in the same room! 2) Moving in between years is not a hassle, since everyone leaves for the summer anyway (which is a 4 month break!). What IS a hassle is having to pack everything between terms. Which is why there are 2 types of rent - short contract and long - one is where you pack in between terms and someone might live in your room during the holidays (like a guest or an exchange student) and another is when the room is yours for all 8 months. 3) All the rooms in College are singles, no one has any roommates for 3-4 years. It's just your bed and your desk (and maybe a toilet/shower if you want to pay more)

@pandajules5 жыл бұрын
Oooh, great question! Given that I also wanted to do engineering in Cam, but last minute decided on CS. One of my acquaintances is actually doing Information and Computer Engineering modules in his 3rd year now, because he is gravitating slowly towards CS, away from building bridges, engines or materials. I'll ask him and get back to you on that!
@MrBedBringer5 жыл бұрын
@@pandajules Thank you!
@_mxhir5 жыл бұрын
PandaJules any update? I’m extremely curious too
@pandajules5 жыл бұрын
Of course! (sorry forgot to paste, ugh) His words: "You can't choose any IT modules even in 3rd year, so yes, MEng is the only way to switch. The only CS things in 2rd year are Intro to ML and Computer Vision. 3rd year - some theoretical stuff like inference, statistics. Then finally for masters - some deep learning, probabilistic ML, CV, software design, computer imaging, computational neuroscience. If i could go back in time i would've chosen cs But i think engineering gives you a very good alternative. Engineering is good if you are not 100% certain about cs. Other topics can be interesting Just annoying that they are compulsory. Like bridge structures, materials and their breaking points, electronics and buildings. Cambridge CS is very theoretical and gravitates towards learning algorithms for problem solving, as well as some historical stuff which can be truly useless. Still, many companies don't care and will come for "compscis" rather than engineers, even if Eng Dept in cambridge is the biggest and is actually quite applied which helps with the real world problems. We have a compulsory 10 week internship. Anywhere. Just basically go out there and work in research/industry. I did research both syllabuses. I applied for civil engineering with no cs experience at all, no exposure to programming. How am i supposed to know i like it if i dont get the chance to study it? Hacking sounds cool, but it also sounds could to build shit like burj khalifa. CS at least gives better prep for interview questions. Cuz whatever google is saying about looking for potential, they'll still ask some theoretical questions to see whether you know the foundation. Engineering exposes you to some programming, because some projects need to be coded up, but it does not teach you that in a systemised manner. So you would end up knowing python and matlab, but perhaps not what is going on behind the scenes. If you know you want to do software related stuff - CS, if you don't - Eng. Try picturing yourself study Materials, Thermodynamics, Mechanics, Electricity, Fluids. There is a lot of physics involved which won't be in the CS course. Still, remember that companies often look for people from technical fields. They will actually put it in their applications as "looking for graduates from Maths, CS, Engineering, Physics, Computing, Accounting" which means there is still a lot of hope even if you chose a different "flavour" of a technical degree. The most important thing is to enjoy those 3-4 years. A lot of mathematicians did enjoy them, despite them knowing that it's all very theoretical and they will probably end up having to retrain to be coders and/or go into banking. Still they would not have chosen any other degree"

Such an interesting perspective on the rooms at Cambridge University. Cambridge itself is considered to be an amazing university, but the halls are like rubbish! I mean no offence, but I went to a different uni, and our halls were so much better in terms of; quality, modernisation and space. Not to mention a lot cheaper. I think Cambridge need to invest in redoing their halls, as all the videos I have seen regarding Cambridge uni halls, they need some TLC. Though, I have to admit, I do like the idea of going up the stairs in your room! That's pretty cool!!

Often they cant modernize alot of it because it is an old building that is protected. But the furniture could definitely be improved!

Er, it's a huge uni, with 30 colleges. You think one student's experience is representative? Her rooms seem decent to me, but there are far, far nicer rooms in the uni which would have you telling a very different tale.

So you have to vacate the room every break??
@pandajules4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but there are just 3 terms and 3 breaks (winter, spring, summer). Each term is just 8-9 weeks, but each break is 5-6 weeks, so it's not as if you have to pack-unpack very often. You can see the dates here: www.cam.ac.uk/about-the-university/term-dates-and-calendars
