@felipealves19452 жыл бұрын
I don't think Latimer or Camel were "galactic years ahead" of anything of their time. In fact, the opposite is true: they are pretty much the Polaroid shot of 70's standard musical scene. Among guitarists we had: Jan Akkerman, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, Dave Gilmour, Brian May, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, and many others. Progressive bands, we had the full rooster from the two sides of Iron Curtain that I don't need to repeat here. To be honest, when millenials/zoomers talk about a 60's/70's/80's artist being "ahead of his time", they talk about their own mediocrity: 70's/80's popular music still have the stick to measure musical quality, and the zoomer generation did anything to push the envelope, to move art ahead. Probably the less inventive/innovative generation of all times , artistically speaking.

Doug tells a great story on the Camel DVD 'Curriculum Vitae'. When they arrived at the BBC to record that session he was suffering from a huge boil on his neck which was giving him discomfort. Memory lane... I watched this performance when it first went out on TOGWT ( l was 13) and was so blown away by it I went out after school the next day and bought the album. I was a skint kid so that was a big deal for me, but I never regretted it. My art teacher had been Camel's tour manager and he hadn't even heard it yet when I got it. I lent it to him to listen to and his verdict was "it's the nicest album they've done by far. It's just a different level." I can't argue with that. I don't think they did anyrhing as good before or after, but it doesn't matter. For me this is one of the great concept albums of the prog rock era, and it's sad that it has been mostly forgotten. It's a genre that was of its time, but for me this still stands up.

Camel have been one of my favourite bands since the mid 70s and have probably seen them live more than anyone else. Andy Latimer described how they were so proud of the Snow Goose album when it was finished that they played it from start to finish for a group of record company execs who all looked at each other at the end and said "Yes very good but where are the vocals?"

Reason he objected to them using the Snow Goose title was he was very anti-smoking and for some reason he wrongly thought the band were associated with Camel cigarettes. I smile when so called musical historians appear on documentaries on the history of prog rock and Camel are hardly mentioned, if at all. How do you overlook a band like this? I can only surmise they're clueless. In my top three along with Floyd and early Genesis without any doubt at all. Superb band both on vinyl and in particularly live. They were a big part of my musical catalogue growing up in the seventies as a teenager. Music's been a huge part of my life and I've loved bands from all the decades I've travelled through. Certain bands and songs take you back to certain memories don't they and listening to this particular piece takes me back to those days of transcending from childhood to early adulthood with all my mates. Such an important period in your life. It's nice to have a sly glance back over your shoulder now and then and the revisit the memories that make you smile.
