King Arthur's posture while sitting in his chair tells the entire story...acting without words is wonderfully demonstrated by Richard Harris. the acting during "What Do The Simple Folk Do?' was so well done in this version. Are those real tears I'm seeing as Arthur laments over justice and revenge to Lancelot and Guenevere? So sad and frustrating for all...and Lancelot has tears as well...wonderfully acted. Excellent directing to hold the closeup on Arthur's tear soaked face. "...one brief SHINING MOMENT..." Could there be a better acted line anywhere? "Here is my victory!" WOW!!! This Act III is the very best version...even better than the movie! YES!!

I like this version of the Arthur-in-the-forest scene better than the version where Mordred bribes Morgan le Fay to trap Arthur. (Most productions don't use that anyway.) This version makes it Arthur's choice and allows Mordred to give him that choice, making it more of a battle of wills and philosophies. (Plus, I like the fact that Arthur seems to want Mordred to become a worthy son and heir.)

My favorite musical by far. I have loved this play since I was in high school in the early sixties when we put the play on. It made me interested in the Arthurian legend and I have read so many books over my lifetime about it. The songs in the play are wonderful, funny, sad, joyful, playful and poignant. I remember watching this when it originally aired. I had spent many hours that summer listening to the original Broadway cast recording (Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet), singing along, and acting it out in our living room. I may have been a 12-year-old girl, but I was fervently drawn to the idealist Arthur, the tragic hero whose only mistake was trusting & hoping too much. I even fashioned myself a tunic for my performing. This is the first time I have viewed these performances since my original viewing 38 years ago. While some of the timing was a bit different in my memory, 49:04 "Some of them [the drops in the ocean] _do_ sparkle!" sounds exactly as I remember! (And yes, I cried on this viewing, as I cry every time I even repeat the lines to someone. It's a powerful, evocative, inspiring concept and execution.)

A beautiful story. Thanks for sharing your recollections. I've recently read in Richard Burton's diaries how he was taken aback by people's reactions to his performance in the revival of 1980 (which I was blessed to attend). He said some people visiting him backstage had tears in their eyes and could barely speak, and that he couldn't understand how this almost childish little piece could evoke such strong emotions. Well Richard, I will make a humble effort to explain. I'd say a lot of that can be attributed to the sheer humanity of the main character. We'd all love to share the same optimism. Don't let it be forgot...

Some of the songs are missing, but to is the best picture of the show. It came out in 1960 and I saw it on stage then. I actually found this version of the script online with the exception that it still included the Morgan LeFey scene, song and all. I really thought "Take Me to the Fair" dated back to the original script. Guess not. The strange thing about the script is (maybe this is because it was written in the late 50s) the love between Lance and Jenny comes off as more of "L'amour courtoise" and you have trouble seeing how any jury would have convicted (probably all men, as in the movie...). Also, Mordred just kind of appears and incites in a way that defies logic in terms of the pacing. I know people have commented about the movie being a bit overblown, but in terms of the drama and pacing and overall clarity of the relationship between Lance and Jenny, I feel like it made more sense and evoked more pathos. I understand that this version of the script may have been tailored to 1950s mores, which were more conservative (so maybe they took the "tell, don't show" approach) but I think the later iterations of the script made a little more sense. Missed "Fie on goodness" but was happy to hear "Before I gaze at you again" and "7 Deadly Virtues." This Mordred was really nasty! Loved the kid at the end and the scene with him and Arthur!

"You May Take Me to the Fair" was in the original version. But Lerner and Loewe cut it before the Broadway opening because the show was so long. However, it is on the original cast album with Julie Andrews singing it.
@jenniferschillig37682 жыл бұрын
@@SymphonyBrahms Ditto with "Fie on Goodness"...it isn't in the published version of the script as I read it. Which is kind of a shame...it makes the point that since the knights were chafing under the rules of chivalry, Arthur's dream had flaws in it from the start...Mordred only exploited them.
@kennethwayne68572 жыл бұрын
@@SymphonyBrahms My understanding is that both numbers, 'Take Me to the Fair' and 'Fie on Goodness' were in the show for the opening and were cut roughly three months into the run. That was when director Moss Hart finally left the hospital and was able to see the show. He'd had a major heart attack shortly before the opening and had to miss it. By some accounts Lerner took over directing duties (and became ill himself). While both songs were on the original cast album, they were excluded from the published script.

I know this is old, but I have to say that I loved this, specially the song "Guenevere". I can feel the anguish of Arthur and Guenevere, the joy of Mordred, revelling in the destruction of the Table and all it represents, and the indignation of the knights knowing what the best of them did with the queen and later suffering many deaths at the hands of the same knight. I'm not sure I'm correct in who it is the main solo singer (I'm guessing Sir Dinadan), but I loved his performance there, even more if he is the knight associated with lighthearted jokes. IDK, maybe this production really is lackluster in comparison to the others I haven't fully watched, snd seeing Harris' face while bowing to the public is genuinely deppressing, but that song (along with "The Seven Deadly Virtues" and "Camelot") are the ones I love revisiting from here and I see few people talking about it. (Or maybe I'm just ignorant and lacking in good taste. That could also be it.)

Also, I need to highlight these lines "In that dawn, in that gloom, More than love, met it's doom. In the dying candle's gleam Came the sundown of a dream. ... @jenniferschillig37687 жыл бұрын
No, I think both were in the stage show originally--they're on the original Broadway cast album with Julie Andrews. A lot of stage productions cut "Fie on Goodness," and I think it's a bit of a shame when they do that, because the song establishes that Mordred didn't CREATE discontent among the knights--he only exploited the discontent that was already there, because Arthur's dream, as admirable as it was, had flaws in it from the start.
@somebody97 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Schillig I think this version remedies the lack of "Fie on Goodness" by Guinivere not having to convince the knights to battle Lancelot. They already dispise Lance and their displeasure of him likely grew when the queen started to show favor towards him and the rumors that followed.

The best Lancelot and the worst Guinevere ever! Not a single emotion crosses her face. No reason for either man to be in love with her.

I did not think it held a candle to the movie. I liked Richard Harris, but not the others. Listen to either soundtrack instead. I have seen many Broadway plays and watched filmed stage productions before. This did not sparkle. Nice try though... supporting cast sinks it.
