Yes-These are camels snacking on cactus. This pair of dromedary camels, Baby and Nessie, clearly don’t mind the spines. It hurts, but they can handle it. Camels have adapted to harsh desert conditions that require them to eat thorny plants. Inside a camel’s mouth, small cone-shaped protrusions called papillae guide the animal’s chew. The key is to avoiding being poked by the spines. Camels pivot their chew and slide the needles vertically down their throats. Regardless of their discomfort, the ruminators keep ruminating.

Chewing on cacti seems impossible, but not for camels! What are your thoughts on their ability to handle spiky snacks?

evolution is so totally amazing - life, flora and fauna, has adapted to so many kinds of habitats. somehow i don't see this as happening so slowly as Darwin thought. there has been evidence, i'm pretty sure i saw it somewhere (Science News?) of plants and animals adapting already to the climate change. But, i had no idea that camels could survive by eating cacti. it probably started by eating softer succulents and then smaller needles to the really large ones. it's totally incredible - and very crunchy. thank you for posting - fascinating :}

though a lot of animals are humble and quiet in their bearing.. Camels i should say is one of the top.. Endured the hot arid climate of the deserts, endured thirst for hours/days, carried loads of heavy stuffs, and have to eat cactus plants for survival.. Camels deserve admiration for strength, endurance, and meekness.. No wonder the camel specie are still intact since time immemorial for they had adopted and acclimatized with the kind of environment they're in.. A living testament that difficulties in life make u more stronger.

The camel is like, "Hold my beer. Watch this." and then he starts gobbling down a big chunk of cactus with inch long spikes as everyone looks on screaming. A week later he's in another bar in another state using his special powers to earn free beers. Eventually he becomes a hopeless drunk. He writes a book and does the Dr Phil show.

That’s actually a bit of a bad idea, as they actually digest the thorns as well for the nutrients that they provide along with the cactus. You cut off the spines and you’re cutting out 1/3 of the nutrition.
