For those wondering: no, the cactus doesn't hurt the camel. These animals have oral papillae in their mouths, which are made of keratin; those little things look like spikes, and are very hard. That evolutionary advantage allows camels to eat cactus and stuff without hurting themselves, and if you search for a picture of their mouths inside, it looks like the Sarlacc pit from Star Wars.

@@Keevman⁠ to people who don’t understand I would just tell them to take a theology class or just read a book on theology it would help them to understand the whole background. You can’t just listen to anyone who claims they are Christian because alot of the time the life they portray is just a lie. I believe that God didn’t intend for the world to have so much evil in it however the more people that believe in him and try to live life with morals the less evil there would be. For example, if everyone followed the 10 commandments life would be so incredibly different. God did create every last thing on this earth with purpose that’s why everything goes so well together it’s not just coincidence. My opinion is that it doesn’t hurt you to believe. It doesn’t hurt you to pray. At least give it a chance 🙏🏽💕

To anyone wondering, NO it doesn’t hurt them. They literally do eat tons of types of cactus available. Their mouth is like leather, so those thorns ain’t goin through. They can feel pain chewing those but it’s bearable. Like chewing on a very crunchy hard fried chicken.

For those wondering "how he eats cactae like this?" He has a plate on the top of his mouth made out of keratin ,your fingernails are made out of this,and you should have noticed that they keep rotating the cactus in side their mouth,its because they grind the catcae with his teeth against the top of his mouth,it works like a mortar and pestle, also he aways eats the spike vetically so he doesnt get hurt

The camel's rotating chew distributes pressure from the cactus and the papillae slide the needles vertically down the throat. This way, the sharp ends don't poke the camel as it ingests them. Papillae in camels partially consist of keratin, the same hard material that your fingernails are made of.

Evolution is a highly proven theory, and we have a lot of evidence to suggest that all life evolved from something more primitive. Especially funny since Camels never even evolved to eat cacti because all but one species of cacti are native to the Americas, and the one that does exist in the Old World is only found in sub Saharan Africa and Sri Lanka. Camels don’t live in any of these areas.

They moved to asia because of the land bridge and ended up in Africa. About 13,000 years ago the camels in the americas went extinct leaving only the ones in Eurasia. So camels did in fact evolve to eat cactus.

Just incase you didnt know the camel's rotating chew distributes pressure from the cactus and the papillae slide the needles vertically down the throat. This way, the sharp ends don't poke the camel as it ingests them. Papillae in camels partially consist of keratin, the same hard material that your fingernails are made of.

Before you decide to scream about animal cruelty in the comment section: Camels are adapted to harsh desert environments where the only food source is are cacti and sharp, thorny, dry plants. They have thick leathery skin inside their mouths that protect them from the cactus spines. They can also survive for weeks without water. This is their natural diet, there is no lush vegetation out in the desert. PLEASE educate yourselves
