Hey everyone, it's been awhile since I've uploaded a Camera Basics video! In this episode I go over dynamic range and try to explain it in an easy way. Let me know if the video helped and if you have any further questions! Dynamic Range is a tricky subject because it can get very technical very fast, but at the basic level, it's a simple definition. awesome video. i am relatively new to photography and i am just soaking in as much knowledge a possible. the concept of gnd filters is completlely logical to me BUT there is so much to take into consideration when thinking about buying gnd filters. thats just to much for me at the moment hahah. completely beyond my comprehension so i have to take some time to figure things out.

Thanks for all your great content. I'm missing something. If all cameras use 0 to 255 to record RGB values, it seems they should all have the same dynamic range of 8 bits, or 8 'octaves'. Dynamic range is the hardest photography concept for me.

Cameras dont record in RGB - they are assessing light values. It is only when the RAW image is converted to a JPEG or some other 8 or 16 bit format that the light information is compressed on the computer screen. By working in 32bpc or some other Linear compositing workflow, you can retain that light information later in post-processing.

Like said camera work on 14 bits, they record between 9 to 11 exposure values (9 to 11 bits) . The more informations you begin with the better the result 11 bits to 8 bits is better than 9 to 8 bits, so 8 bit is not equal to another 8 bits your (11-9) more bits are included in your compressed 8 bits Hard to explain 😕

Sir, deviation of 0.5 stop of dynamic range on either side amounts to change of a 1 stop of dynamic range as a whole, so how the concern photo amounts to increasing of 2 stops of dynamic range from 10 stops to 12 stops under its HDR application. Plz. Explain.

That's a good point. You're right in that underexposing 0.5 EV and overexposing 0.5 EV would only increase dynamic range by 1 stop. I meant to say 1 EV on both sides. I didn't catch this error before uploading, unfortunately. Thanks for pointing that out!

2:17 So, is it possible to get higher dynamic range with pixel-binning? Like in the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 ultra where it can combine 9 pixels into 1 pixel?

I would say hidden Hdr The advantage of pb is to reduce the apparent noise at the price of a lower resolution

Is there a webpage with a list of the dynamic ranges off different cameras (DSLR, compact-camera) and smartphone-cameras? Especially for smartphones I find it very hard to find for comparison.
