Canon R8 in New Zealand 🏔️ w/ RF 28mm, RF 50mm, RF 100-400mm.
In short - The Canon R8 is a bright spot in Canon's lineup. We're still missing some mid-tier, first party primes. But in 2024, there are many small lenses that pair really well for travel.

I was SHOCKED by the dynamic range of the R8. I bought it primarily for video...but... for photography, push the shadows, drag the highlights down - NO problem. The file doesn't turn to mush like every other mirrorless I've used (Canon, Nikon). The way it handles noise - amazing as well.

I don't have anything else to compare to, but it does seem to do really well if you get the exposure anywhere close. I tend to get caught underexposing, but I blew some of those skies out at Hobbiton unfortunately 😅

Well done, Dan! Great video! I can appreciate when someone puts a lot in an edit even when others may not notice. I love my R6 II and have thought of the R8 as a C camera. I probably will either pick up the R5 II when it is released or the R5C since it has drastically dropped in price. I have nothing longer than 200mm...are you still liking the 100-400? How is the sharpness as a non L lens? BTW...had me laughing pretty hard when you zoomed in on the small item in your pocket.

I was legit thinking of you when I was exporting this. I had just saved your latest vid to watch later, and thought some of this was up your alley haha. I'm really trying to drive my R6 into the ground for photos long-term, but if I was forced to consolidate what I have into one body, R6ii would definitely be it. I love the R8 as a top down with the c-stand/boom combo. I'll use my phone for that when I need a third, but prefer a dedicated camera. Still using and liking the 100-400mm, but feel a little unqualified to compare to the 100-500 or 200-800 as I still haven't used either. There is a bit of a learning curve to shooting long, conditions and light and distance to subject all seem to play a bigger role. When you get close to your subject it's great on the lower mp stuff, at least. Of note, depending on your use, 400mm still feels short. I'm cropping on almost every single shot, many times fairly heavy. Ideally the R7 is where you get this to shine, but when I tested that, the AF was more finicky and it's not quite as good at recovering in low light (which is usually where you live with the f8 at dusk).

You're one of the few guys I will feel good about my color grading and then watch a video and feel like I don't know anything at all like a noob. Shame. But yeah, the R8 Is excellent. I really loved using it while I had it. Only faults are the small battery, and those 1.8 Canon primes having the crappiest autofocus motors Canon could find, super laggy response to an otherwise excellent autofocus system. Id be all in on Canon right now if not for that. One more thing, the editing on this video is phenomenal. Bravo! Just wow, the graphics and the pacing, it's excellent, I know this took a ton of effort. Amazing work!

Haha well that's very kind to call it "grading" because I too feel like a noob 😅 The half-macros would occasionally get stuck for me, which is annoying. I'm really interested in trying the new 35mm, though it will likely be a LONG time before I get my hands on one.

Great video you mentioned the canon RP could you do a video comparing the rp to the r8? im intrested in upgrading mostly focusing on imagine quality and various lighting conditions
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 19 күн бұрын
I don't have it anymore, but are there specific issues with image quality you're facing? I would make that upgrade if you're looking for a big jump in 4k video capability or continuous shooting speed, or AF reliability for moving objects in tricky scenes. Things like noise performance are probably pretty similar.

You’re absolutely right with your thoughts on the R8. A powerful photo tool with great video features at an incredible value in a small form factor. Even without the third dial and no joystick, being able to program the lens’ control ring and to use the back screen with my thumb to move my AF point are totally fine as workarounds. Having multiple small batteries to carry and one SD slot are the only things to be aware of with my R8 bodies. Most of my work is photo, so the video capabilities are just bonus for me if/when I may have to do video in the future. Really interesting pace and format in your video! Also, Nice touch with the music selections and how you edit with the rhythms of the melody in mind. Those editing choices are fun and very satisfying as a viewer & music educator 🙂 Love the video!
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 21 күн бұрын
Haha a weird one for sure, and definitely leaned into the music here, glad you liked it. I do find that I use the control rings a bit with the R8 in a way that I never seem to use them anymore on the R6.

Love your videos, Dan. And how the channel has been evolving. I graduated from the RP to the R6 two years ago, never looked back. Really liked the small body, hated the small battery and viewfinder. I tried to like the 28 for the form factor, but it just did not spark joy for me as the 35 does.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 22 күн бұрын
Thanks, appreciate you watching! The RP to R6 jump felt big for me, and was also very glad I did it. And good on your for trying both and finding what fits. I still prefer the 35mm for a talking head angle, but the 28mm was a better compromise for me elsewhere. I'll be interested to see if they make any more in the 28mm form factor.

@@DanYosua Absolutely, there are just so many quality of life improvements in the R6 when coming from the RP. As for another pancake in the same housing, there is precedent for that with the 35/24 and 16/50 as well as the old EF 24/40 pair of pancakes, so hopefully we will see another tiny lens from Canon in the future, although what focal length such a lens would be is anyone's guess.

A bit fast on the clips…especially (mostly) with the captions. Need to look away to read and then look back to appreciate/analyze/etc but it changes (too???) fast. I was interesting though…your approach.

Weird one for sure, great feedback though. I spent a lot of time trying to refine that part once choosing this direction. Probably an edit to set aside for a week and come back to... but alas. Good to consider for next time.

I really enjoyed this vid. The whole thing, but the first half specifically was fun! My R7 with 100-400 is killing it for Banff wildlife, with the R8 now joined by the 24-105 F4 for the wider stuff. 24 and 35 1.8 lenses standing by for R8 video and for a niche role: R7 night street photography. I like the tighter framing but basically can't do without amazing IS. So R7 with 35 is better than R8 with 50 for low light street. Not sure I could handle the non stabilized 28mm with the R8... I'll stick with the 24-105. Battery was my #1 for hesitancy for R8... it hasn't mattered even once in practice. Glad to have the R8, surprised how much I continue to love the R7 and consider it the primary camera.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 21 күн бұрын
Thanks! I think those two are a great combo, especially if you're using the R7 to make the most of the 100-400mm reach. I really liked shooting clips in the 4k crop mode when I rented the R7.

R8 is my first mirrorless and full frame camera. It's great, especially the fast auto focus. I also have the RP but R8 is faster and more consistent when auto focusing subjects. I wish it had better battery and a second SD slot. Otherwise, it's great value for the money.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 22 күн бұрын
Hell of a first mirrorless. It's funny, I started with a t7i and nifty 50mm. I thought I would love photography, but wasn't sure, and that was a big purchase at the time. If I had known I'd fall in this deep 5 years ago, R8 would have been approachable yet with plenty to learn and maybe worth splurging for used. The RP has an interesting place now. For people that can find them on a killer deal, something like that would still have been treating me fine for a lot of my hiking shooting.

Started with 77D and a few EFS lenses. (Also huge purchases for me at the time!) I knew I love photography but didn’t realize I’d get this deep into this hobby! Lots of my purchase decision were heavily influenced by this channel! Anyway, going back to your vid, I couldn’t help but notice the different approach you went for here. Slow clap for the effort! You deserve more subscribers!

how much do you miss the EVF experience of the big' R cameras when using the little' R8?
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 22 күн бұрын
I don't find it bothers me much mainly because I only use it ~25% of the time. I'm not even sure why I don't use it more generally, I just prefer the screen flipped out I guess. When I am primarily in the EVF, with the 100-400 for example, I'm trusting both cameras very heavily to grab an eye, and they both do well. I think if I used one better than both, coming back would be tougher.

Every review speaks the same - but a small battery is not a problem at all. The problem is not in the sensor or low light compared to the Sony A7c. Canon R8 is awesome until 6400ISO, not 12800ISO. Canon must think about some cheap, good version of the lens. Canon must give up the R8 type kit lens or RF15-30 F4.5-6.3 lens and must bring a cheap and good RF28-75mm F2.8 or 24-50mm F2.8L. Also a good cheap telephoto like Nikon 180-600 F5.6-6.3

Ive been using an old ef 35-80iii f4-5.6 with my rp that suits my travel standard focal lenth needs quite well. Sits nice in the hand with the adapter. Ill pack the rf24 with it if things get a little out of bounds. If canon came out with an up to date version of this lens, preferably in a 2.8 style. I would be head over heals.
