What is Fujifilm's best lens for wildlife? 70-300mm vs 100-400mm. Both have their pros and cons. Is the 100-400mm really worth the extra weight and cost? Is it sharper? Does the red badge mean anything? Wildlife photography is actually Fuji's strong suit. Underrated system. XT4 with either of these lenses = magic. Which is better for video and videography? 4k 60p, HD 240fps. Better stabilization and autofocus?

@@fatjoncameraandtechvideos9951 Serious question - is that because we will lose detail? Surely it reduces the amount of the sensor (and hence pixels) used for taking the footage, which then gets expanded back out to the recording resolution. So detail is lost surely? To what extent that matters is another question / issue. From the footage posted in this video, I was surprised at how good 240fps @ 1080p looked compared to 40K 60fps. It has made me want to experiment with 240fps a lot more. Thanks @Camera Conspiracies

XC 50-230 4life! XC lenses have the best stab because they’re all plastic and the components are lighter, and my X-S10 is 26MP so a little crop is no big deal. It’s easier for AF to track little critters when you’re not zoomed in so tight anyway. I get really great bird and squirrel photos with that combo. You should try the XC lens on your X-T4.

Yeah, I am coming to that conclusion too. Someone on a Fuji FB site said though that 1080p is achieved by line skipping so is not the best, but I have yet to see that using my eyes. I guess it depends on how closely you look, and I am pretty sure the Fuji cameras hold their own agains the competition TBH. Too many pixel peepers around, and perhaps they were Sony/Canon/Nikon fans :)

Funny, I was shooting a Euroasian Wren for the first time earlier this week. I think what your noticing regarding the magic of getting close, is actually the dof. Very subtle amounts of bokeh creating more 3D pop, and the nice creamy tones. You can actually see it in the sony shot on the rounded vertical tree bits as you're talking about it. Subtle bokeh fall off. Essentially (basing this off of full frame) at 200mm F4 filming something 30 feet or so away, the bokeh is subtle. Not a bad image, but the without amazing shit happening, the magic may be absent. If you zoom into 300mm or my full 400mm reach, (constant F4) magic is achieved on that same subject.. and even at 200mm, as long as you can get 15 feet or so. Because the APS-C lenses have all that reach, you are actually getting very similar results, which is why you've been noticing sometimes even Olympus is holding it's own. Anyways to re-cap, closer to the subject at any focal length increases your fabled Toneh Magic. You probably know this stuff, but with long lenses it though technically the same is different. Start using your zoom, and notice your various distances at said zoom range. This is actually where photo's come in handy since the EXIF data will tell you what your zoom and f stop were. Of course allot of what I said also depends on how far/what's immediately behind or even in front of the subject.

I am still picking around here in Vancouver trying to decide: do I get the 150-600 at the cost of more debt, or a used 100-400 (a bit less debt) or the 70-300 (less, less debt). Meanwhile I have, if anyone wants it, a Zeiss Milvus 50/1.4 ZE (Canon) which can be adapted to Fuji and is then a nice portrait focal length 75/1.4. But I digress. As someone pointed out below, get the lens you'll actually take with you. If its too heavy, WTF. That's the reason I switched from Canon DSLR to Fujifilm--weight, size, and the cost of lenses. Did this video help me decide? Hell no.
@JohnDrummondPhoto

The Fuji "herky-jerky" IS when you pan isn't user error. It's the lens. Tamron lenses do the same thing; that's the main reason I ditched their 150-600. Now that I'm into video, the Tamron was useless for wildlife video. I followed Jan Wegener's advice and switched to the Canon RF 100-500. So much smoother for panning. I understand the Sonys are better also in that regard. Forget 2x extenders. They degrade image quality too much and you lose two stops of light. 1.4x tops, and work on getting closer. Really nice bird footage! I didn't realize Carolina wrens ranged that far north. In fact, I just checked Sibley's Guide for North American birds and Toronto is just at the edge of their normal range. Great catch! I was going to comment that only nuthatches can descend a tree head-down but you mentioned it. Sure sign of a birder to be excited by that information. I lucked up recently and photo'd a nuthatch in midair while hopping downwards. Really cool photo that I've never seen from others. The Sibley app has recordings of bird songs and calls. It's not free but definitely worth it. A lot of times, I can ID birds just by sound now; then once I know what it is, I have an idea where to look for them.

I have played around with this a bit actually. The jerkiness is reduced if you add Digital Stabe to the extent it is totally gone if I apply stabilisation in FCPX as well. I will only set this though if I think I am going to pan.

The 70-300 is nice, but for indoor shots, or low light, I'd prefer the 100-400. But I guess for outdoor wildlife shots, I can see the advantages to the 70-300. So you prefer the Fuji X-T4 with 70-300 over the Olympus E-M1 and 75-300? The Olympus 75-300 would have more reach.

@@colinhoward2200 The answer is probably that it's only an increase in performance: the camera is applying a crop, which is better to have since 4k that way is still possible and pixel count is closer so the camera has to do less upscaling (I think). Another thing, if you use less pixels your readout speed will we faster since it's using just a portion of the frame. Even if those things weren't relevant, you still get a perfect 4k video with a longer reach. (Think how good it would be a res crop, a precise 4k crop, it would make your lenses skyrocket in therms of focal lenght

I want my picture to looks realistic and want to shoot JPG/HEIF mostly hence I no longer really into the Fuji film simulation. I into ultramacro but I not sure should I take it into consideration because you can just google them as they mostly looks the same. I consider full size body or actual pocketable camera because camera in between don't provide good handling yet still need a bag to carry anyway, since RX100 can't provide all what I need, I will just use iPhone 15 for pocket camera. I'm not a bokeh person but want everything in focus with story and creativity and just has few projects need blur background.

Have both , and same when found a 70-300 for 614 euros could hold off buying it... have the 1.4 teleconverter , and realy enjoy using the 70-300 for its weight ... nonetheless the 100-400 is really a superb lens if you can manage the weight ...

Just add a TC 1.4x to the 70-300mm, or get an X-T5 or X-H2 and then use the digital zoom.

Someone lend this boy a GH6 so that we can hear the Pannysong again. FYI they made the 50-200mm a lot easier to use after complaints about the 100-400 apparently. Also lol at the Olympus being officially dead, formerly the best system ever.

70-300mm. Ordered in Jan 2022. Decided to go to a ball game in Sept. Check the rules about bringing cameras? Nah, I don't have the lens. Thought exits brain. 5 seconds later I get a call from my friendly camera store. Lens is in! Worked nice. For photos. I don't know how to shoot video. And you aren't supposed to do that at a ball game anyhow. Anyhow.

@@gepetto6266 No there is a version just for video called Topaz Video Enhance AI. The upscaling AI is superb but you need a mac M1 or equivalent if you don't want to wait days to render. I just upscaled 2.7k dji mav mini footage to 4k and it looks no different to a mav air in native 4k. Upscaling fuji 240fps to 4k is also superb. A little expensive for the software but for pro work it's a game changer.

I am pretty sure Final Cut Pro compressor does the same thing with upscaling if you export from 1080p to 4K. I suspect that DaVinci resolve does the same? The videos posted here were pretty impressive to my eye of the 240fps footage.
