Why Is Canon So Confusing Now?

Canon always has the most confusing lineup of cameras. The naming scheme makes logical sense until it doesn't. Canon R1 flagship, R3 next best, R5 R6 II getting worse. Then R7 is APS-C, and R8 is full frame. Why does Canon always have so many cameras that are barely different?

Just as digital cameras really began to arrive onto the market in the early 2000s, Canon uniquely pulled every model of camera with the number '5' in the title. This removed quite a few different models from sale overnight. The reason they did this was because they had too many models on the market at the same time and this confused buyers who then had to wade through even more data before making a purchase. By offering too many models, consumers that were unable to decide would then drift towards other brands. The decision to keep releasing new, unnecessary models was costing Canon critical sales. So here we are in 2023 and Canon has once again flooded the market with unwanted, unnecessary models. Again, mark II versions of existing cameras (which are usually just a tweaked version of the mk1) are everywhere at a time when the Mk1 models are also still on the shelves. But Canon went a step further to pollute their own sales program: First, they advertised the R-system as a Full Frame mirrorless System (remember the "Step Up To Full Frame with EOS R" advertising?) . Then they foolishly introduced APS-C models to the R-system lineup, which for many consumers offer further confusion and disappointment. Now they've started removing IBIS and dumbing down the features of the new models they're now flooding the market with. They abandoned the EF-M mount just 10 years after releasing it. What's to say they won't abandon the RF-Mount in as little time? Such a shame.

Sony's A7 line up is pretty consistent. You've got the regular allround camera, the R for more Resolution and the S for Svideo. And the high end model is the A1 for some reason. Still better than what almost everyone else is doing.

That go-pro horizon thingy is better than I thought. I was very happy when u jumped back to the Sony though. But yea, Canon’s naming is hella confusing. I almost considered an R8 as a 5D m4 replacement purely due to confusion. That would’ve been a trainwreck.

It's very simple. All cameras are named Rn. If n>6 it's apsc unless n=2^m where m is a positive integer. You're welcome. I'm looking forward to the R16 which will be a $150 full frame by my calculations.

The EOS R (and 5D Mk IV) was replaced with the R5, a long time ago. They just kept selling them as a budget full frame body. And the R7 is better than the R8, because it has IBIS and the better battery. Also, there was always one APS-C body in the pro line-up: 7D, 7D Mk II, now R7.

@@future62 Yes, it did. The EOS R had pretty much the same specifications as the 5D Mk IV. It was just the mirrorless variant. It was introduced at a lower price point, because it was Canons first full frame mirrorless body and they were still testing the market, if they even were going to head that way. Don't pin yourself down on the price point. Compare the technical specification of the 5D Mk IV and the EOS R. And the spiritual successor to those .. is the R5.

A note about the GoPro, I found that turning off noise reduction using Labs led to a huge bump up in image quality and detail. Plus, you can also adjust the exposure ramping speed so that you don't get those fluctuations as severely.

@@MinimalWave1982 Yep! GoPro released some "Labs" firmware that allows you to access deeper control over the cameras by setting up custom qr codes that the camera will read. They unlocked a ton of features (like motion detection, pressure triggers, log curves, bitrate control) and one of them was turning noise reduction completely off which makes the image way way better.

Here's my opinion of Canon's current lineup: R1 = 1DC MII (whole new league/ groundbreaking/ahead of it's time/need a small mortgage to afford lol) R3 = 1DX MIV (top tier professional full frame) R5 = 5D MV/R MII (high end professional full frame) R6/R6 MII = 6D MIII/MIV (mid tier professional full frame) R7 = 90D MII (high end prosumer apsc) R8 = RP MII/7D MIII (budget full frame) R10 = T9i (budget apsc) R50 = SL4 (entry level budget apsc)

@@tomislavmiletic_ I agree. M6 mk II was my first MILC. It's a really decent piece of hardware, but the M lens lineup was severely lacking. Canon didn't put enough into it for it to replace the EF line. Thankfully, though, it can use all of the EF lenses.

@@brandonfriesen9820 I was a long term EOS user (I still kinda am, but I guess not for long) but after M2 or M3, when I saw that Canon is NOT pumping out new M lenses, I knew the whole thing will be temporary, so I made a switch to Fuji, at least what APSC is concerned, course it reminded me on times I've spent while working on film. Yp, I'm that old 🤣 R system might be great, but for what i do these days it's ridiculously overpriced.

For this reason (and also compatibility between Canon's systems), I just went for EF lenses and an EF to RF adapter for my R5C and an EF to M for the M6. Works perfectly. I've got about 10 EF lenses, now. Also, what's really not cool is that Canon is threatening any 3rd party that makes an RF lens with patent infringement. It's a great way that Canon says they don't care about the little guys who are just starting out. Makes it an expensive system for sure. :(

I'm really curious how the R3 would perform for hybrid Photo-Video, I'm intrigued by the instant video record button that works with 1 press while in photo mode, to take you straight to preset 3. I've heard that image quality and dynamic range are fantastic, this sounds like a Camera you could really flex on your wildlife and wilderness documenting.

Hey, BMPCC OG dude here, back from 24h time out cause apparently KZfaq thinks I'm a bit rude for not being ok with US and Norwegian military blowing up european infrastructure and still not picking a side other than that of *the people* but I digress. I rather talk about pancakes. Because pancakes are awesome. Seperate the yoke from the egg white, make a really thick batter out of just flour, water and the yoke. Beat the living snot outta the egg white until it has sort of a shaving cream consistency. Don't stop when it's still wobbly, that would be pointless. Once that's done, carefully fold the beaten egg white into the batter. Don't use them twirlies for that though, they destroy the egg white foam. Once you're done with that, you have what I call *the floofypoof.* Place a blob into your pancake sized pan on medium heat, wait until it's solid enough to flip with an elastic, yet firm spatula, flip it once, wait til it's done, clear the pan, repeat. Some interesting forced rhymes in that song..... Speaking of Glimmer Glass.. Saw a guy give a cheap alternative. Get a cheap UV filter and spray it with some hair spray. It washable if you want to adjust the amount. Just spray it again. Sounds plausible.. LOL! Have a great weekend!

That highway shot would be great for a dusk long exposure, make it so! PS If you find change in the woods, it is from someone dropping their pants for only 1, 2, or 3 reasons. Wash your hands! I just sold my Z7II for a used Z6 (Only $950 on MPR - use my affiliate links below JK,) and not waiting for Nikon's next big thing (60mp would be too big) either. The best model name for Canon products would be the COINS series. Which fits into this video quite well. (ba-dump-boom)

Why is it so red or yellow or whatever autumn look it always has ? I had some footage from a gopro in July and still looked like it was autumn.... This is one reason I don't get why GoPro is the "hero" in action camera stage.

7d was a pro level crop, so they key the logic the same ;) i.e. a single digit. while 70d was a good consumer level camera. and 700d is a starting option.

Open Camera also allows you turn off processing (like oversharpening, noise reduction, edge detect), select bitrate, select codecs.

The Nikon Z50 should have been a A5000 (consumer) and the Z6 should have been a Z600. The Z9 should have been a Z4 or even Z4S. The Z7II should have been a Z820 (not quite a D850 for studio/sports.) Sony naming makes a little more sense, but still very confusing to new users. Just use the year they were released and their resolution! Maybe a letter for S=Sports R=Resolution G=general use. It is like they purposely make it difficult so old models sell in those little camera stores in NYC or when traveling. LOL Wildlife view on 20' selfie stick and a slow-mo street crossings are your new trademarks, awesome sauce! You forgot the boardroom meeting in the woods with props though.

You need a 360 camera like the Insta360 X3. Hands free vlogging with the right mounts. Would have been perfect for this video. It would remove that big ugly stick at the start. Spend an hour or so working out the software and you’ll never look back. It has intelligent tracking to speed up the process. Take the time, it’s worth it.

Nah, it pixelates trees for some stupid reason. I have the X2 and a GoPro 11 Mini. The mini doesn't pixelate trees. Some Insta360 footage is just awful. 360 cameras will be great in the future as the tech improves. They will replace most action cams, but not today

I believe the R8 will replace both the R and the RP. The original R6 inherited the sensor of the 6D, hence the nomenclature. The R50 is aimed to replace the M mount M50. The R7 replaces the 7D line. But bottom line is: I agree. The name series is all over the place; but so were the DSLRs, especially the crops. One system for North America, another for Europe and Asia. It made no sense. As for custom modes, the RP only had them for photo. At least the R8 gives you custom modes for both photo and video, albeit just two each.

R6 did not replace the 6D mark II, way different camera. The R8 feels more like a 6D mark II replacement, but it is deffantly a replacment for the R and/or RP.

Not sure that the R8 is better than the R7 except being full frame. R8 does not have IBIS and it has a tiny battery.

It lacks IBIS and dual card slots, plus has the small battery. However, it has the R6 Mk II sensor and AF (better AF than the R7), shoots up to 40fps and has a faster sensor readout than the R7. Low light performance is in another league to that of the R7. It also has an HDR feature which can be used to capture moving subjects. I'm not sure if it has in-camera panoramas and focus stacking (btacketing and stacking) like the R7 has. It definitely doesn't have sensor shift auto horizon-levelling, which the R7 has.

awesome video-the numbering is confusing but I am loving how they are having different "creator lab" events across Canada. I am hitting the one in Calgary this week and am looking forward to seeing the newest cameras (as a Nikon shooter I don't have the luxury of new camera bodies).

Sorry to disappoint you, but Canon clearly stated the R8 is the successor to the R. I suspect it replaces both and there won't be an RP Mk II. It would have no IBIS, no dual card slots, so what would it have? Same specs as the R10 but with another rehash of the RP sensor? Who'd buy it?

I’m a Canon user and what Canon is doing with their low budget lineup is ridiculous. They don’t need to redo every EOS M, EOS 00D and 000D again under the RF mount. Plus, they are pretty ugly. Only the R, R5 variants and R3 are beautiful cameras.
