"There was a time when art was an assault on what art was, and practices were motivated by an elated passion for regions of the mind that amaze the vision more than the eyes. Cameron [b. Marjorie Cameron, Belle Plaine, Iowa, 1922; d. Los Angeles, 1995] was of a time of heedless belief in the power of art to invent and celebrate new ways of representation and being. Her work oscillates between the psychedelic and surreal and defies a conventional understanding of modernity as a logical notion of progress in art. She reminds us of how little we perceive of our existence and how much our mind, if fully explored, awakens an alternative knowledge.
Her life and her art parallel with some of the greatest creative minds of our time including Kenneth Anger, Wallace Berman, William Blake, Bruce Conner, George Herms, Henri Michaux, and Unica Zurn. With intellectual chemistry, a different history of our time can be written. If not written, a history that can be hallucinated is the only strategy to overcome the gruesome cruelty of a culture that has neglected the values of humanity for way too long, a culture that might leave the negative trace of systematic erosion, destruction, and obliteration. From Cameron's work, a museum can learn courage-the courage of a woman who defied the conventions of her time and followed so many women who remained in the shadow of patriarchy but who have often taken more revolutionary risk than their seminal husbands, lovers, and friends."
-Philippe Vergne, Director, MOCA.

She was my beloved aunt and a major influence in my life. Her oil paintings were mysterious and fabulous to me when I was a young child. So was she!

Catanya Saltzman OhMyGod!!! Finally! Someone related to Cameron! Honey, I had the GREATEST honor of living in Sampson's home from 1995-1999. Both Sampson & Cameron passed in 95' I moved in Thanksgiving day 95. That property was ALIVE! Living there was & still is one of my greatest treasures. Your Aunt & her amazing crew touched & influenced my life beyond measure. How fortunate you are to have had her! Blessings and so much love to you and yours. She was truly magnificent.

👍👍 Thanks for posting this video. I did not know that Marjorie Cameron was actually a visual artist. Fascinating to consider the art inspired by Thelema.

MOCA Wonderful video! When I was a kid I saw a b&w movie years ago at a small arthouse theatre about Wallace Berman and the Semina artists. All these years I wondered who she was. I had no idea of the Jack Parsons and Kenneth Anger connection.

@@kikeheebchinkjigaboo6631 No He didn't...the somwhat notorious quotation you are misquoting, refered to the "sacrifice of a child",a Magickal Operation he then states he had performed "thousands" of times,it was in fact a reference to masturbation, sperm being the sacrificed "children" he would ingest in solitary Rituals. Simply another incidence of Uncle Aleister's mischievous sense of humour. There are no reports of pedophilia anywhere in the multitude of Crowley Biographies, even those written by vehement critics and sensationalists. I rest my case.

@@MrJeepmarine sadly, when i tell people what i know they will think it is crazy, Parsons met Crowley in real life who faked his own death and is a suspect in the murder, they were warned to stay away from the dark side of the moon, and Crowley was co-opted to deliver the message to Parsons. USA totally faked the moon landing. What is the opposite of occam? Pentagon is steep and deep into the occult, "A vast conspiracy no one will believe."-J Edgar Hoover
