Eh. The musical score is good. There is a lot visually that's impressive (but other parts look like a cheesey cartoon that breaks immersion). The overall background plot about the destruction of democracy would make Alex Jones proud. But there aren't really likeable characters in the prequels, and the dialog and pacing for a quite a lot of it is beyond awful. It definitely hosts the worst love story I've ever seen put to film. I think in many ways Lucas is/was a genius, but unfortunately he was surrounded by yes men on the prequels who didn't fill in the gaps where he lacks. On the original, nobody really believed in his vision and were surprised at it's success, but because of that they pushed back and made his life difficult in ways that bettered the film. The second film, arguably the best, was directed by somebody else, and some of the best lines were ad libs from the cast. (Most notably was Harris Ford with "I know" instead of a lame out of character sappy "I wuv u" from the script ...like the garbage lines/scenes in the prequels.) The third film (Return of the Jedi) was already going down hill a bit, most notably with the ewoks, but also the treatment of Boba Fett (already an iconic character at the time), as well as cheese details like the Light Saber functioning like a nerf bat on the sand cruiser. Yeah the Disney films were awful, and predictably so, but wasn't "the fans fault", nor were the failings of the prequels. The reality is that Lucas waited 20 years to do them, and by that time he was no longer the same daring and visionary young film maker surrounded by doubters and mentors to push and prod his work towards their best by the finish line, he was an old man who got fat and lazy but was idolized and surrounded by sycophants and yes men, while at the same time having so much money and a huge production company that he no longer needing to ask for financial reasons IF something really SHOULD be in the film, the answer to everything, even bad ideas that shouldn't have been was: the 3D animation guys can do it all in post. He sat behind a wall of monitors while actors on naught but green screens delivered terribly written lines with little to no direction, relying on his vast wealth and armies of animators to put whatever random things came into his out of touch brain on the screen, and it shows. Were there brilliant things in the prequels? Yes definitely. But they still aren't good films despite every frame being a masterwork painting and the music being arguably the best John Williams ever produced. Unlikable and boring characters, terrible dialog and pacing, and over exaggerated cartoon nonsense and silliness DON'T carry a spot on lesson about political corruption over the finish line to be great films. Let's not forget that the originals were also a classic path of the hero story, and the prequels were not. They should have drawn on standards from great tragedies, but I see no such efforts visible in the final product or though patterns of the production. The Star Wars franchise had it's time. Decades worth. They will turn out more crap as long as folks are willing pay, but the soul is long gone. Now it's just fast food like most everything else. RIP. But let us not pretend the fallen were saints beyond fault. It's disrespectful to the memory of the deceased as well as the plight of future artists to pretend it was otherwise.

@@davidanderson4748 I get it. The writing can be strange, but it's been engrained in the nature of Lucas' Star Wars. The way they speak is almost archaic, but that's the purpose. What Camille misses that makes Mustafar even more didactic and interesting is it is one of the Separatist foundry sites, where the raw materials for the Empires gears of war are made and originate. So the battle takes place in the very origin site of all the industrialization and hence, corruptability and madness/will to power. R.O.T.S was riddled with symbolism and ideological undertones. I'm just pissed that Lucas handed his legacy over to the Mouse.

I am also pissed. But I mean we have to consider it in context. When the deal happened Disney and more importantly it's Marvel subsidiary was about to achieve the most ambitious and succesful Film Universe crossover in history of film. And there are interviews of Lucas stating that he created Star Wars because he wanted to make this modern mythology. From that point of view and at that time this was a good decision and many fans welcomed it. Nobody knew the disaster that's about to come, much like the Jedi in ROTS :D

I can't think of another scene where someone expresses that basket of emotions. Obiwan is like a parent upset that his kid became a school shooter, and saddened that it might be from his own shortcomings in raising him. And Anakin is burning while screaming hatred while Obiwan tells him he loved him. Dawg, that's heavy.

I was almost 20 when ROTS came out, so anyone my age or older already knew what was going to happen with Anakin's fall, getting burned, all that. But what the movie was somehow able to pull off was this overwhelming sense of sadness. You felt a burden of despair watching it all unfold, it was like a renaissance tragedy. The last hour or so of the movie you just wanted to jump in and change everything, it was extremely depressing but somehow wildly entertaining and artistic.

The thing with the prequels is that all their problems are surface level things. The underlying structure of them, the symbolism and the imagery, the subtleties of the editing, all of that stuff, was rock solid. Was Jar Jar a little cringe at times? Sure. Was the dialogue wooden? Sure. But the moments where there was no dialogue, where the only thing Lucas could do was show rather than tell, the prequels absolutely hit it out of the park.

It’s a joy to watch such a respected figure in the arts celebrate one of my all time favorite films, flawed as it may be. It is utterly insane that this movie was made. To this day there has still been nothing like it - the ambition and scale is untouchable. Cameron continues to push the technical envelope but the inventiveness, imagination and complexity is owned by Lucas still. His Star Wars films are imperfect because there’s just nothing else like them, period. Perfection is developed over time, iteration and repetition - there’s no chance for it when something is so incredibly new and bold. Therefor such polish should not be expected or used as a lens of judgement against such a mind bogglingly intricate and novel tapestry. The opening scene of Revenge of the Sith alone is all the evidence needed, let alone the rest. The prequels can be really hokey at times, sure, but my god do they still stand alone as a testament to the vast reaches of the imagination, even from one person. Just incredibly inspiring.

Anakin is supposed to be innocent and earnest and a child. Innocent and earnest kids say corny shit all the time. It's actually perfect that a cornball grew up to be a jaded villain. Probably from people calling him a cornball. It was clear on tatooine Anakin was the butt of his fair share of jokes.

I love Episode III Revenge of the Sith. It really is the best of the prequel trilogy - the one prequel that feels like a Star Wars movie. Anakin Skywalker’s tragic fall, the destruction of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire - just a compelling story. People can shit all over the prequels, but I will defend these films while acknowledging their flaws (though people tend to forget the original trilogy wasn’t perfect either)

It's almost blasphemy, but I'm becoming more inclined to say Revenge of the Sith is simply the best Star Wars movie. Period.

The original trilogy is like the Iliad, the Oddessy and the Anead. Almost foundational myths to an entire culture. The prequels are like the Theogony, the story of the liberation of the gods and the Titanomachy. Episode 1 is like the Theogony because it tells about the beginnings, Episode 2 is the liberation because it has more of a focus on love like how the gods married and Episode 3 is the Titanomachy because it's the overthrow of the old order and a rise of the new

"Nothing has been produced in the last 30 years as emotionally compelling as the finale of The Revenge of the Sith" I think she makes a strong argument, but I would counter with the finale of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I'm sure Camille has never even heard of the game, but still. Love RotS though.

he's briefly referenced star wars and harry potter and lord of the rings as modern myths that are popular because they got the underlying myths right he typically discusses much older stories, but he has specifically called out star wars as being good because it's "right" or "true". you know how he talks. he's never so far as i know done a deep dive on them, but I imagine he'd say luke skywalkers story was basically an abrahamic call to adventure, and anakin skywalker and obi wan kenobi were another retelling of the "hostile brothers" ala cain and abel etc.

Such a nice commentary. The final duels on Mustafar and Coruscant I believe are the best in the saga. The choreography is amazing in the duel between Anakin and ObiWan and it is so emotional, but I feel like people are often missing the point of the duel in the senate between Yoda and Darth Sidious. Yes, it is shorter, yes it is made mostly by CGI, but it is just as important and emotional, if not even more. They are fighting for the fate of the galaxy and I sincerely believe their duel's ending is even more important for the galaxy than the other. Why? Well, if Darth Sidious didn't rise to that unimaginable power, didn't single-handedly wipe out the Jedi order and didn't defeat Yoda in their battle, Darth Vader wouldn't have been saved and reconstructed. Yes, the empire wouldn't be as strong without Vader, but if Sidious wasn't victorious, Vader would not have survived. It also represents the demise of the jedi in Yoda's failiure to defeat now Emperor Sidious. He underestimated his enemy and thought his trust in the Dark side and Vader wasn't strong enough, but oh boy he didn't know what was coming.. Best SW movie ever, and before some douchebag says I know nothing about SW, I completely exclude the Sequels and all the Disney shit and I place ESB at honourable second place.

She even knows all the names of the planets! I only became aware of her through Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but she's right. There's so much going on in that finale. She did well in describing it all. I like how they show the fall of the old ways and rise of the new Empire. Like ROTJ in reverse. (Yeah RJ, it's been shown before) It's like art, history, mythology and sci-fi all in one. Anakin's gift to give and save from TPM and his passion is what makes him fall and burn. It's a personal story set against a larger backdrop of ridiculous scope! And it's balanced by the tender men and women at the end. Unlike Disney who present the women as masculine and authoritative and all the men as either emasculated versions of themselves or toxic? Balance Disney. You can be a male with natural authority who also knows when to keep his pecker out of things. You find balance not by becoming the opposite sex but by enhancing both the Masculine & Feminine sides that everyone of us has. As talented as the new directors were, to think that they burnt George Lucas' story ideas in the Mustafar bin is incredible!
