Once I finally got my hands on this set, I could not believe what a good value it was. I have seen Camillus steadily increase their value offerings and the quality only seems to get better. This set is good if you do a lot of hiking/camping and prefer to pack light with just the essential tools. The shovel is more than adecuate for shelter/camp/fire building and the knife can serve many purposes due to it's sturdy build and partially serrated edge. The fire starter and multi tool round up the set for a good variety of essentials for these basic outdoor activities.

Got one of these last week on clearance . I was really impressed with the quality for fourteen dollars . Bare spot on the spine is for scraping the ferro rod fire starter .

The bare spot on the spine is a solid 90° angle for striking the ferro rod!

The bear spot on the back of the blade is for the Flint that’s why it is left unpainted so you can strike the flint for fire

Thank you yeah I addressed this in the pinned comments giving everyone thanks for pointing this out! I had a feeling it could have been for this but I honestly don’t see many knives with it since the coating on most is flint-friendly.

I think the bear metal is left intentionally for the ferro rod...some jimping would have been nice to see but? hey it is what it is. I'm going to look for this set right now! enjoyed the vid. NJ Walmart has them for $18.99 still not bad..

The E tool welds on the back of the shovel head look weaker than standard issue. The tang in the handle of the knife probably stops after that second screw in the scale. Through some duct tape around that ferro rod before it gets lost. 14 bucks, not bad.

Speaking as an ex soldier let me bring you up to speed on the shovel. In the army these are called E tools, short for entrenching tool. The serations on the side are to cut tree roots. The most popular use of the e tool besides digging a fighting position is to dig a cat hole. That is where you do your business when out in the woods, if you get my drift. Would like to pick one of these up just for the e tool, I will be on the lookout for them here at my local. Thanks for sharing.

You know, I had read about this before and it didn’t even trigger into my thoughts last night when I made this. Thank you for elaborating on that and for your service. I know these tools have a lot more uses than just digging and they can be true life savers. I’m just very impressed with the quality to be honest. I hope you can secure a set soon!

@@NotNuffKnives another use for an e tool is a wicked hand to hand weapon. There are many accounts from Korea and Vietnam war where GI's would sharpen them up like an axe. Very effective when weaponized in that way.

@@charlesartificer2158 That is crazy but I can see how that would be a formidable weapon, especially when sharpened. This E-Tool is definitelly a well-rounded piece of equipment.

@@NotNuffKnives the Soviets e tool is used in there hand to hand training as an axe. Also fun fact if the e tool blade is free of paint, bare metal they have been used as an improvised frying pan. Kinda crazy when you think of all the ways an e tool can be used.

Gerber and Buffalo river outfitters both made a knife like this then bear grylls ruined it and the bare metal area on the back of the blade is for the ferro rod

Use a strong magnet 🧲 slide it down the top of the handle. Plastic handle on the E Tool? You sharpen it like a knife.

You think it's a good shovel, until your 4WD gets stuck 50 miles from nowhere. Your next stop is the gardening supply to get a REAL shovel. Thermo plastic AKA Kydex, SOUNDS like a great idea until you leave your knife in your car on a hot summer day with the windows closed, and discover that a substance that you can soften with a hair dryer, isn't likely to be a great substance to make knife sheaths out of. Ask yourself, is it a good idea to put a loop of lanyard on an easily pulled out item on a belt knife? Answer that question AFTER you have been squeezing through dense brush, digging your truck out of a dry wash, 50 miles from nowhere... Old Saying - You get what you pay for...
