Check out our website namwartravel.com for more information. I shot this video in February 2019 as I was walking around Camp Ashau, a former Special Forces camp that was overrun in 1966.

Awesome work my friend. Your passion for documenting this part of history is truly appreciated by we that were part of the landscape(s) 50 + years ago.

i have to go to all these battle sites before i die seeing the a shau valley in the distance gives you a real perspective of how long and wide south vn really is and the true size of the battlefield and how the viet cong/nva were able to hide and attack from these areas

Thanks for your comment Gary. During Dewey Canyon I assume. I have a couple of other videos on my channel as I'm going through the northern Ashau closer to Base Area 611 and also from Dakrong Valley. Have a look at them if you like.

Ray, thanks for your comment and watching the video. Yeah, the highland areas look very similar also further south from this. It's a beautiful part of the world, but I wonder if you guys could make way to see that during your days.

Yes, lots of history in one little place. But it was such a beautiful place. The children played football on the adjacent field as the sun was going down behind the mountains.

Even today, those distant mountains are so dark and ghostly.

Very much so. But the valley is peaceful now.

So that was A Luoi Base Camp? ... Looks so tranquil and beautiful. Fog and mountain shadows are still there... In A Shau valley.. when your time is up.. your time is up.

Hi Paul. This is the A Shau SF camp which is about 12 kilometers south west of A Luoi. The old A Luoi runway is today a street in A Luoi town.

My pleasure, thanks. I also have a video on my channel called A Luoi Airfield - LZ Stallion. I filmed it from a car as we drove up to A Luoi and then into town ending up at the old runway. Check it out here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iKl0gsdkytPKmGw.html

Sorry, my Swedish accent combined with a poor microphone, but I’m walking around the old camp area towards the old runway. It was a great visit. Thanks for watching. You can always email me on namwartravel@gmail.com and I’d be happy to send over some of the pictures I shot that day.

@@Jonas-Namwartravel Cool. So I gather from the comments that was the location of a Special Forces Camp?
@Jonas-Namwartravel11 ай бұрын
Yes, it has a very interesting story being on of three camps established to block NVA infiltration from Laos. It was overrun in March 1966 I think it was and then abandoned. There were two Medals of Honor won. There are some good write ups on the battle online.

I joined the Army in late 71, by then ground forces were being removed. My late BIL did 2 tours with 101st-66,67. I was with the 1st Cav. I pray for those who didn't come back, I get emotional when I see videos of the suffering they endured.

Those craters were from NVA arty and rockets. Most came from Laos. Unless the Air Force ran an Arc Light when US personnel left
@Jonas-Namwartravel2 жыл бұрын
The large craters are most likely from B52 raids that were run over large parts of the valley. There are some smaller craters in where the actual camp was, they might be from artillery but could also be from B52 strikes, just that they have filled up over the last 50 years.
@pedro97w2 жыл бұрын
I am surprised the craters have not eroded away
@Jonas-Namwartravel2 жыл бұрын
Many have been filled in but in areas like this they are very much still there.
@haroldburrows47703 жыл бұрын
All those bomb craters still there, locals probably got catfish and carp in them

Probably not a good idea to go traipsing about in that area, then or now.
@LAstn-k7d3 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking.its probably still mines buried there some where
@Jonas-Namwartravel3 жыл бұрын
It is likely there are still quite a bit of UXO in this area where I walked. I recon though that most of it are larger bombs that are buried deep in to the ground and weren't of any real danger. There is a village nearby and they played soccer on the field just next to the old base area, I guess they have filled in the craters. Smaller things like mines, mortar grenades and rockets are more likely to be found in the jungle and are more dangerous.

Didn't see much of the valley floor. Except being choppered in. Mostly in the mountains and jungle surrounding the 4:57 Ashau.
