Joseph Campbell continues exploring C.G. Jung’s idea of the Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious by looking at Jung’s concept of the Shadow - the aspects of one’s personality that one has submerged - and looks at how it serves as a wellspring for dream and myth.
The lecture from which this clip was taken has been released as the first program in Mythos I - The Shaping of Our Mythic Tradition (www.jcf.org/works/mythos-series)
For more of Joseph Campbell’s thoughts on Jung and the Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious in myth, check out The Portable Jung (www.jcf.org/works/portable-ju....

He was the adviser to one of my favorite profs, who arranged for him to speak to our class in the early 80s. Even though I pursued a career in computer science it was my comprehension of mythology that affected me the most. Which I attribute to Campbell. If there's any chance for the human species to control our instinctual tribalism, it's through addressing our belief systems. Engineering skills are just not sufficient to address the issues of the 21st century.

Jung revealed the distinguishing skill that catapulted Nietzsche into the league of Plato beyond perhaps even Schopenhauer, and Emerson. Nietzsche was highly trained as a classical philologist immersed in the original sources of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. Hence, Nietzsche gained a profound knowledge of the greatest minds of antiquity and could read the source material in a direct first-hand way and not rely on second-hand accounts. Imagine being able to understand all the nuances of source material from the Bible in Hebrew or Plato in Greek to appreciate the nuances and meanings of texts directly rather than accept secondhand some other scholars' interpretation of the passage. Nietzsche's devastating critique of the intellectual edifice of the times originated because he knew how the professors of the time masked the truth to push an agenda, protect an intellectual moat, or just hide the truth from themselves or others for either lack of courage, intellectual depth, or other sinister reasons. Nietzsche lived and breathed for the truth. Just as a world-class poker player has to live, breathe, and sleep poker to be a world champion, a philosopher on the Olympian level of Nietzsche has to breathe the mountain air of truth every day in a way not possible for a man involved in a daily business or practice such as Jung. Sure, the business can keep the man "grounded", but to reach Nietzsche's Olympian level and full spectrum dominance philosophical level you need the foundational basics of classical philology combined with a passion and instinct for truth based on an actual reading of ancient wisdom in the original. As German philosopher Schopenhauer observed, unless a man can read Latin and Greek in the original, there will always be a hole in the scholar's education that undermines the depth of his intellectual thought. This observation is a bitter pill for us all in a vapid age of mass media and hollow men. Nietzsche was just such an intellectual tour de force that we will probably never be able to appreciate his greatness or sublime gifts to humanity. Greek and Latin are not emphasized in today's propaganda mills of liberal arts universities or even at the time of Jung when studying Latin and Greek required hard work most were not willing to endure. The German professor and later "laughing lion of the ages" was a sublime gift to humanity. In fact, Nietzsche's Navy Seal-like attack on the soft, descendent Western philosophers and clergy of the time came with devastating force and mountain lightning speed. Ultimately though, Nietzsche's attack came out of a deep love for man and his no-limit potential. Once the blinders came off and courageous, disciplined men were made aware of what the actual classical and Biblical texts meant free of some political or mercenary agenda, Nietzsche allows us all to share in the love for the search for truth. In this sense, Nietzsche, in exposing the agendas of many "translations" and university moat protecting "degrees" brings us all back to ourselves and our higher man potential once we breathe the mountain air of truth, and discover how the truth makes us all free from the agendas and deception of the establishment.

Wow, I was thinking about the same thing. I'm surprised someone noticed this as well. I'm currently reading the Gabor Mate's book When the body says no after the Hungry ghosts and links to this. All the buried shocks or denied experiences and emotions, are going to act crazy at some point by getting to the surface. It's like the fear of that memory is hunting you until it gets so aggressive that transforms into illness or addiction. Something is going to happen to catch your attention on the real problem.

the ego abhors not knowing thus avoids facing this reality of individual unconsciousness surrendering to our ignorance is a blessing to our consciousness and thus our ego can relax in the safety of not knowing although when more awareness coming forth scares the base reality of the ego... thus shock occurs and an aspect of shock includes the anger of the unexpected ; that is the realization of more being revealed as a threat to our general human understanding of our consciousness .... especially when physical and emotional trauma is involved , since our mind will reel from this extreme devastation that has been thrust upon us .... making us brutally aware of our feelings of hatred and our desire for retaliation ( our own cruelty ) and our fear of continued abuse which shocks our psyche since feeling devalued and being a victim of such disregard is enormously shocking ... our safety is destroyed and we wish to trust in life

@youarelife3437 3 жыл бұрын
@@markbeckett7740 Alright. Well, what I mean is, that Jung kind of makes it simpler to understand when you look at it from the perspective of consciousness and unconsciousness. Ages ago, I was into psychology and analysis and I was learning to analyze symbols, metaphors, and the like in dreams or artwork. Back then, I was just jumping from one thing to another to seek meanings in analysis of dreams and artworks of people which I had learned from a guy whom I can almost call my mentor. So I knew I was getting good at it but I also knew I that deep down I wasn't sure. I realized later on how it is all highly subjective to the observer/analyst. That was Freud's way to do it. My life soon took me on a path where I had to do a lot more self-analysis/self-reflection. I delved deeply into meditation, mindfulness, change of city, tried cannabis, new friends, new experiences that had more to do with the right brain than the left brain. I almost gave up on my career and suffered from depression, loneliness and chronic fatigue. But that was a pivotal point. What I went through, would be called a crisis by normal people, but in Jung's understanding, it is called a shift/expansion in consciousness which happens when you live life to the fullest. It is a next step in evolution one could say. Many psychologists, lecturers have talked about it. Jordan Peterson has talked about it. Also look at the life story of Richard Alpert a.k.a. Ram Dass. When you enter yourself and know yourself, it is not at all a problem to understand others. After this shift in consciousness I have become a totally different person. Life has become much better and more clarity, love, joy and surprises have come to me. Now it is much easier for me to see how people behave and why ... or to know for sure what an artist was feeling/thinking when painting an abstract work. This is Jung's way to do it. You are a light of consciousness and there are things that you can and cannot see. The light falls on the things you can see which is the conscious mind and what it perceives, but then where it does not fall, are the realms of your unconscious. We don't know what may come out of that darkness Jung spent a lot of time diving into and shining light on his own unconscious mind, meeting his shadow. Jung's wrote a diary which has now been published after many years, known as 'The Red Book' which documents this but it is an extremely, extremely difficult read. "Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." - Carl Jung Btw I recommend watching the movie 'A dangerous Method' which depicts Jung and Freud's friendship. Also watch this video analysis of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining to know more about the Unconscious mind and a theory about the use of the Red Book- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZqmKqM2j192-gHk.html

Human behavior is simply an act of compensation. If one follows the compensatory path to it's beginning, one will discover either a deficiency, an oversaturation or any combination of both, in the endocrine system and or the brain's neurotransmitter balance. Every human is in a constant state of seeking homeostasis (homeostasis being the debatable word here). From there, it gets very complicated.

At 2:00 Campbell talks about two different sources of the unconscious, but he doesn't say they come from different parts of the brain and then he mixes them together. The part he calls "biology" is in the brain stem, and according to Mark Solms, is the real center of consciousness. This definition of consciousness refers to the feeling of being yourself or of being aware of yourself (Freud's Ego). Any creature with a brain stem might may be conscious, according to this theory. The repressed memories are just memories, stored in the cerebrum like other memories that are not repressed. Whether you repress them or deal with them may be an interesting subject for psychologists, but it's not about consciousness. The cerebrum stores and processes all kinds of information, but is not the center of you. Ie, the unconscious is not a secret you controlling you without your knowledge (the "Id" according to Freud, the 80% below the line on Campbell's diagram), like Jekyl and Hyde or a devil and angel sitting on either of your shoulders, but is more like a microprocessor and memory bank that you use to solve problems, mostly offline and not requiring your attention. "You" are your emotions and feelings, which are shaped by your subjective experiences, not the result of a meta process or higher level brain function, as one might imagine from reading Freud. But Freud was writing 100 years ago, before much was known about the physiology of the brain.

This is excellent. However symbols have a dual aspect and they are not just related to the past. Sometimes we do not fully understand the meaning and the meaning only comes later. The greater meaning of events in any book are that way as we read it. Owls may symbolize what is said here, but symbols are not always so self-referential only. Sometimes they also predict the general pattern of humanity in the universe. And the owl has more symbolic meaning than that. The human way of regarding symbols is also just a symbol of something greater in its patterns.

I have so much respect for Joseph Campbell, so it makes me sad to listen to him talk about Carl Jung, because at the time this video was created all the flaws, and ultimately the racism in Jung's conclusions were not known as they are now. Joseph Campbell's greatest quality was his understanding to respect all people and all beliefs equally. The hero's journey was developed by Campbell's lifetime work to find the commonalities within all religious cultures. He did not divide them into primitive and modern, nor does Campbell share the same spiritual beliefs as Jung, who viewed White Christians as modern and everyone else as primitive. Joseph Campbell was a very wise compassionate man. Jung was a smart researcher who sympathized with nazis. I thought it was worth mentioning. I love Campbell, but Jung was not a good person.

I have one dream that recurs ocassionally.. It feels like a night terror. In similar fashion to her dream, I am standing in a movie theater, watching a horror movie.. I feel something happen and I am transported into this movie called "The Rooms"... Firstly, there is usually a man who suffers facial trauma (I have a hard time with it). Secondly I come to a long, dark hallway with a figure at the end of it... It is tall, lanky, has impossibly long arms, no eyes, yellow sharp teeth and a scream that could scare the bejesus out of anybody.. And it runs right for me, screaming like a banshee. Any attempt to escape the theater lands be back to the beginning of the room I am in. If I wake up (Which I do during the hallway scene) then I wake up terrified. But if I go back to sleep *The dream continues where I left off.* There are several rooms, all of which contain darkness or the things I fear the most. Open, deep water, heights, long hallways, abandonment, and I haven't gotten to see what is in the other rooms, but they may be fears I repress... It is a miserable, dread induced fear that I'll have to tackle these rooms one by miserable on to complete the movie... I have no idea what is on the other side.

Dr. Campbell, what about the "old hag" of Nova Scotia? .I've been working on her for a while given some of my own "dream" problems. I am not a theist so I find this mythological study of "her" more than interesting. She also comes up in Mormon mythology. The author of a book about her called, "The Terror that comes in the.Night," has many references to a library in Southern Utah. She is much like "Lillith" "Enlil" or "Lilitu" of the ancient traditions. Are you or your foundation students aware of her? Can you tell more and provide references? Thank you sir.

If you manage to make it conscious you can work with it and evolve. One who tries to do that, however, faces great struggles at some points. Jung said that facing your personal Shadow requires you quite some moral effort, although, he also said that the confrontation with your personal Shadow is the easiest part of the confrontation with the unconscious.
@myothersoul1953
@myothersoul1953 5 жыл бұрын
Your "personal unconscious" is changing all the time. Anytime you learn something well enough it becomes automatic, that's your "personal unconscious". Anytime you become habituated to a sound or other stimulus that's a change to you "personal unconscious". Bias you have that you are not aware of are part of your "personal unconscious". Unconscious really means unaware of, so lots of personal things qualify. The big question is why call it "personal unconscious" and not just "unaware"?

Disjointed, hacked up, out of context bits and pieces of Campbell"s message? The world needs, for example, the full Moyer / Campbell interviews uncut, But this foumdation is instead hacking Campbell's core messages up into tiny little disjointed hacked up bits and pieces. They are doing that as teasers to commercially monetize Campbel's work. The very nature of Campell's works must remain freely available, intact, in context, and sui- generis on a "giving foot forward" monetization model, which primarily is not the JC Foundation monetization model. Does this greedy foundation have copyrights on these works? Why can't anyone post these works up on IE. You Tube etc. free uncut unedited? For instance the full uncut Campbel / Moyers series. Why is Moyer not acting to counter this outrage? How to obtain these works intact & unedited now like when Campbell was alive without profiteering? That would be Campbell's will. The Campbell Foundation, in the guise of proliferating Campbell's body of work, is instead fragmenting it for commercial monetary motives. So aggravating! Seriously any effort to keep Campbell's work free, and free of being hacked up, and free of being exploited by the world system, then count us in. Metaphorically speaking: God was out for a stroll one day with the devil following along & imitating God. God was carrying something "he" had picked up along the way. The devil runs up and asks. "whatcha got there God?" God replies, "I got the truth." The devil then says," give it to me & I will organize it for you!". JC Foundation you need to stop "money changing on the temple steps".

@@ It can be stressful and enjoyable to journey towards the truth, but results are positive because the good, the bad and the ugly belong to the concept. What we have today is a US NAT0 combination that intend to rule the world and charges protection money to some countries while threatening others. The human trafficking of migrants is being taken over at the Southern border by the Administration. This is the name of the game and Citizens and Nations adjust according to their awareness interests and level of conditioning. In industrial terms the main Mafioso are Europe, Russia, China, Canada and of course the USA. Yes but teachers like Joseph Campbell have been around for a long time. The current iterations are Jordan Peterson and Deepak Chopra That sort of mysticism has been around throughout human history and probably long before that. It's a dead give away that they don't know about what they think they do when you try to use it to predict what will happen and it makes no precise predictions. They think they know because they can use it to explain the past, if they really knew it, it could be used to predict the future. Best thing to do is think critically about everything that is taught and even more importantly everything you imagine you know. I am not saying don't believe anything, I am saying hold your beliefs to a higher standard than "sounds good".

I must say that over 40 years ago I read Hero and the Masks of God volumes and Campbell never once discussed any of the stories from the Old Testament. I know he was accused of being anti-Semitic and given the lack it is understandable. I understand that he was never known to have made any derogatory remarks about Jews, but nonetheless to omit such an important source of the Western canon from his discussions leads one to suspect his refusal to accept Judaism. I'm Jewish and non-religious and wholly secular. Nonetheless I don't like that Campbell never discussed anything Jewish.
