Full death toll associated directly or indirectly with the pandemic
That is, excess mortality
1 January 2020 and 31 December 2021
Range 13.3 million to 16.6 million
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General
These sobering data not only point to the impact of the pandemic
but also to the need for all countries to invest in more resilient health systems
that can sustain essential health services during crises,
including stronger health information systems
Generate better data for better decisions and better outcomes
Excess mortality
Number of deaths that have occurred and the number expected (in the absence of the pandemic)
Direct and indirect deaths
(due to the pandemic’s impact on health systems and society)
Health care systems overburdened
Deaths averted during the pandemic
Motor-vehicle accidents, occupational injuries
Most of the excess deaths (84%)
South-East Asia, Europe, the Americas
High-income and low-income countries, 15% of total 14.9 m
Low income countries, 4% of total 14.9 m
Sex
Male, 57% of total 14.9 m
Female, 43% of total 14.9 m
Dr Samira Asma, Assistant Director-General for Data, Analytics and Delivery, WHO
Measurement of excess mortality is an essential component to understand the impact of the pandemic.
Shifts in mortality trends provide decision-makers information to guide policies
to reduce mortality and effectively prevent future crises.
Because of limited investments in data systems in many countries,
the true extent of excess mortality often remains hidden
These new estimates use the best available data and have been produced using a robust methodology and a completely transparent approach
Dr Ibrahima Socé Fall, Assistant Director-General for Emergency Response
Data is the foundation of our work every day to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.
Need to track outbreaks in real-time, everywhere
We know where the data gaps are
Mr Liu Zhenmin, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs
The United Nations system is working together to deliver an authoritative assessment of the global toll of lives lost from the pandemic.
This work is an important part of UN DESA’s ongoing collaboration with WHO and other partners to improve global mortality estimates
Mr Stefan Schweinfest, Director of the Statistics Division of UN DESA
Data deficiencies make it difficult to assess the true scope of a crisis, with serious consequences for people’s lives.
The pandemic has been a stark reminder of the need for better coordination of data systems within countries and for increased international support for building better systems, including for the registration of deaths and other vital events.

What I’ve learned from this pandemic, thanks to you and others... 1. Eat real food. Not too much. 2. Avoid processed food like the plague. Don’t eat like Americans. 3. Walk outside everyday but take vitamin D supplements in winter. 4. Don’t trust the government, big corporations, or those that make a lot of noise without any foundation in science, nature, or reason. 5. Real individualism and reason will never be a mass social movement. :-)

Consider the rampant politicization and polarization encouraged by the far right and channels like fox news from day one. Ignorance on display here. The WHO doesn't control on what happens in individual countries. In the UK, the NHS offers antibody and antiviral treatments to people with coronavirus (COVID-19) who are at highest risk of becoming seriously ill. The treatments available are: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir (Paxlovid) sotrovimab (Xevudy) remdesivir (Veklury) molnupiravir (Lagevrio) Nirmatrelvir, ritonavir, remdesivir and molnupiravir are antiviral medicines. Sotrovimab is a biological medicine. It is also known as a neutralising monoclonal antibody (nMAb). These treatments can help some people manage their COVID-19 symptoms and reduce the risk of becoming seriously ill. They are for people who have not been admitted to hospital. Paracetamol does not TREAT COVID-19, however appropriate use of paracetamol is currently being recommended by public health authorities, including the World Health Organisation, as part of the symptomatic treatment of COVID-19, to reduce fever and provide relief from mild to moderate pain.

Have you actually seen the video? This isn't about deaths recorded officially as caused by Covid, this is just excess mortality in the last two years compared with what would be expected based on the last 5 years, so it includes people who never went anywhere near Covid, for example, someone who got run over by a car in India where hospitals were overwhelmed and couldn't get a hospital bed.

A friends father was admitted to hospital because he was dying of a known kidney failure. My friend had a hard time getting to visit and told me the hospital was empty, his father was the only one on the ward. That was in Norway summer of 21. No one visited GP either, it was not allowed. No wonder millions died. Two of my close friends commited suicide in 21. And many stayed at home loosing education and buisnesses. Now China is locking down 20- 30 million people because of a handful cases of Omicron(?) What are they so afraid of ? Never heard Omicron to be deadly.

I’m an overseas born Chinese and I never really understood my own culture until I moved here 20+ yrs ago. What are the Chinese so afraid of? They’re afraid of death. China and the Chinese people have had to endure mass death events for centuries. Through civil war, through natural disaster, through famine, through colonialism/imperialism…they have PTSD from all the death. They also know their medical system is unable to cope, even with Omicron. They also have a very low vaccination rate amongst the elderly. They are still arguably a developing country. It still takes decades to develop a robust health care system. They also have the added challenge of having a massive population. People are too eager to judge China harshly.

This guy misattributed the cause of the higher mortality rates to the social actions of countries keeping the vacx to themselves and avoided the logical implication that those countries therefore took more injections and have a correlation with a higher mortality rate. How can he miss that if he's an honest qualified scientist? His misguided conclusion is that wealthier countries should have shared more of their vacx so that way the mortality distribution would balance out between rich and poor countries resulting in higher mortality in poorer countries and lower in wealthy countries. Wow.

She went to the hospital and requested ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, only to be told those medications were unavailable. She then requested monoclonal antibodies and was told only the severe cases get that. She was put in Remdesivir and her condition got worse. Oxygen levels from 69 to 40 while on this medication. She was intubated within a month and put into an induced coma. After 1.5 mos in the hospital, she died of cardiac arrest. I have another friend in his late 60’s who was unvaccinated and took ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. His symptoms subsided within 3 days. His daughter is a dr. Hi Dr. John Campbell! Thanks for doing that! But this video makes me wonder if like me you have looked into total number of deaths for 2020 and 2021. I have looked everywhere online. UN, WHO and my government's website. I cannot find a total number of deaths for these years regardless of cause. Excess number of deaths is very easy to find and as you showed, many websites have very sophisticated info graphs. I could easily find total number of deaths in the world up until 2019, but nothing after that. It really makes me wonder why that information is not readily available and if it is and I am the only one not seeing it, please let me know. Also, in many of these websites they do mention in tiny little letters that any person who tested positive for covid had the cause of death to be covid regardless if the person had died of something else. My uncle passed away in 2021 and was battling cancer for a couple years, cause of death was covid. My sister had covid in 2020, she also had special needs and has had pneumonia in the past, was intubated and the doctors poked her lungs during the process. Her cause of death was covid. I understand that in both cases covid must worsen their health and led to the unfortunate outcome but I also know someone who went to the hospital because of a motorcycle accident in 2020 and passed away shortly after and the cause was death was also documented as covid. My family doctor mentioned that this practice during the pandemic was well documented. So in conclusion, I would love to see a follow up video if you do find total number of deaths for 2020 and 2021. I believe that "excess deaths" doesn't allow us to see the bigger picture and to honest compare pre pandemic death rates to pandemic death rates.

And by the same token the more older the population of the rich countries, the more vaccinations administered. Does one just ignore that very important part? It's interesting how quickly people respond to why poorer countries did so much better looking at everything other than their lack of their strict public health interventions almost mandated by Big Pharma. I assume it was then obviously clearly planned to to provide vaccinations to these countries that then obviously had much lower risk because of the age risk associated with Covid? Yet the insistence at vaccinating total populations irrespective of age in richer countries has been pushed wildly. Which global modus operandi around this disease was logical, fair, supported by any significant data or evidence? Everyone is still flailing to either explain, justify, or insist upon what is not playing out as obviously as the obvious.

Excess mortality is about the only reliable statistic for actual covid deaths. It's easy for people who don't deal with mortality data to write it off as nothing, but it's foolish to. Death information is available for most places by cause, and most of the death causes are from a fairly small group. You need to do nothing more than confirm that total deaths are higher and that they aren't being scavenged from a significant cause. And, they are not. I doubt these kind of excesses have been seen since WWII. A change of 2% from expected in any given year is out of the ordinary. To see figures of 10-20% without a war is beyond typically abnormal by multiples.

Excerpt from Senator Pauline Hanson’s e-Newsletter dated 6/5/22. “Have Victoria's Farmers Been Warned? From Stephen Andrew, MP for Mirani QLD Victoria’s farmers and other property owners are targeted under provisions of a dangerous new Bill that was debated in the State Legislature this week. Called the Agriculture Legislation Amendment Bill 2022, the Bill has bipartisan support from both Labor and Liberal, despite the incredibly dangerous precedent it sets for state control over farmers’ property rights. It is all being done under the guise of ‘Biosecurity’. The ground has been prepared for months now by the mainstream media, who has run countless ‘scare’ stories around biosecurity threats - the dangers of which are all very real, but which the media never gave a damn about before. But what everyone in the media and government knows is that anything that pretends to address ‘biosecurity’ will be a sure-fire vote-winner in the regions. This Bill exploits this but it is a ‘Trojan Horse’, for another agenda altogether. One that is far less beneficial for farmers and one, I suspect, they may not be fully aware of. When you boil everything down, the State’s new Agriculture Bill basically gives the Government complete and unfettered control over all forms of food production in Victoria. It grants its agents enormous powers and allows them to show up and enter any farm in the State, without notice or warrant. Agents do not even have to provide identification to property owners if requested to do so. The Bill specifically removes that right. The government can take samples from your property, remove plants or livestock - even kill them. Other provisions include beekeepers now being forced to ‘register’, while the State’s bees are to be implanted with tiny microchips so they can be tracked. Market meat vendors must become ‘accredited’, something that involves huge upfront and ongoing costs as well total loss of autonomy and control. The Bill threatens the country’s food security, particularly when viewed in the context of global food shortages, which we are told are just around the corner. Anyone who thinks I’m exaggerating the danger here should take a look at yesterday’s news out of Northern Ireland. Sheep farmers have been told that a million sheep must be culled in order to meet the government’s internationally-set emissions target. There is also a massive concern around property rights overall, with the dangerous precedent set by the Bill, because there is nothing in the wording that restricts the new laws to farms. This means the government can also enter private homes, seize owners’ pets - even kill them - and destroy any vegetable gardens or domestic chickens it finds. Exactly as is happening right now in China.”

My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer the day the pandemic was announced. We live in Stockport and our local hospital was absolutely brilliant. He had scans and a operation to remove the cancer. He had chemo and many checks and scans. He was so lucky that there was no delay in any of his treatment. He was operated on in a private hospital which was taken over by the NHS which was Covid Free. He unfortunately had to have a illeostomy which left him with a stoma. He was told he had to have a stoma as joining the bowel could have put him in ICU and having a stoma was the safest option. 21 months later he has had a reversal which wasn’t a walk in the park but he’s ok now. There wasn’t any interruptions in his care throughout the whole pandemic. Just wanted to sing the praises of STOCKPORT NHS trust.

How do you figure in my families case? I am a Kidney/Pancreas transplant recipient, 13 years ago this month, and most likely had COVID in March of 2020. The ER where I was taken swabbed the nostrils, got results back, told me I had no fever, and no flu, and that they would send me home with an antibiotic, and to let them know if I didn't improve within a week to 10 days. I had been very ill, couldn't breathe, coughed until my back and stomach muscles cramped, and I thought I might die for lack of oxygen. Normal Oxygen stats are 97-98% but during this episode, were only in the low 80's on many occasions. I am 68 years of age, and a male. I was not, and am not vaccinated. As a pastor to a small congregation, during the last two years of the Pandemic, I visited the bedside, unmasked, as the dying need to see the face in full for the human reassurance, of four persons. ALL of them had received their 2nd vaccine a few days before going fatal. I have a stepson who resides with us 4-5 days out of each week, and he has recently had Omicron Ba-2. He coughed and sneezed, and worked every day at his job. It took him 2 weeks for the worst of it to pass, but he has a persistent cough which will not subside. He too is not vaccinated. His mother, and my wife, is 74, and unvaccinated, and recently was tested for antibodies, and the virus. Both came back negative! This fits none of the narrative here in the USA. My kidney specialist, and my transplant surgeon told me I had better get vaccinated. I refused. Now we see reports showing that immuno-compromised persons, as I am due to anti-rejection meds, should not be vaxxed, as the effect will be lessened by quite a bit. My kidney doctor told me a week ago at my 6 month follow ups, that he should have listened to my advice with what they are finding out now. I am sorry for the length, but I am very curious as to your take on these details. Thanks Dr. Campbell.

It would be good to separate deaths directly due to the COVID-19 virus and that caused by the policies to respond to the pandemic. My passion is jujitsu and I haven’t been training for nearly 5 months now. I had covid back in July 2020 and was perfectly fine. yes, it is so "random coincidence" that the jabbereddooed keep getting sick. My sister is same way, has had some kind of flu at least three times by now and some of other family members I think I heard had still gotten ill. Also two of them had sudden serious heart problems. My uncle who supposedly is so healthy, made by his wife to eat only "super healthy diet" and he works outdoors at many projects every year and goes to doctor for checkups all the time and he suddenly has heart attack. but of course has no connection with the experimental witches brew-vax. lol

I find it odd that the only conclusion drawn from the higher death rates in richer, more vaccinated countries is that they look after themselves. Can we truly disaggregate the data to learn why this disparity in death rates occurred? Are the vaccines an unalloyed good? Are they at all contributory to higher overall deaths? Are there other factors in the poorer less vaxxed areas that led to lower mortality, such as lower average age, lesser prevalence of comorbidities, use of HCQ or Ivermectin, etc?

It's really simple. The American murder rate is a composite of WHO guidelines, and administrative greed in all levels of their health service. The hospitals became a money spinning machine where hospitals that were close to bankruptcy are now awash with cash courtesy of payments for various stages of covid treatment. They became a conveyor belt to the morgue. The denial of early treatment has killed hundereds of thousands. The other countries have simply followed orders, and we know how that panned out before.

I find his investigations thoughtful and methodical. That being said, when he mentioned hospitals being over run... from my experience in Canadian Healthcare, the hospitals are almost always at 110% capacity and often go to "code red" during every, previous flu season since its inception. The difference is that our proud public service decided they were done working (many would happily do so, previously for double and triple OT!), and they started to throw everyone on a vent. The reasons I can't imagine, but that killed more than co vid. No OP tx, no symptom mitigation. Scare people into compliance? I'll never trust socialized healthcare again, no matter where.

Although mRNA tech is known since 1985 or so, there's been great hesitancy to apply this to medicine for people. There were problems with it, as far as I understand. But within the span of 8 months or so, this c0v vaccine was developed. Also 'thoroughly' tested on a population of 40.000 people in a much shorter time span. It's rather new tech, yet vaccines are mandated. Add the fact that WHO did not declare a pandemic until it spread across the world, china locked down but kept international borders open, they refused to research a possible lab leak where they had gain of function research with these corona viruses, several ceo's at pfizer and moderna became billionaires in this past year, lockdowns killed small business but for many large corps, stocks were soaring where government officials are allowed to invest in. But don't worry. All of this is for public health. They have your best interest at heart. Meanwhile there's huge deficits in youth's education, inflation, increase in suicides, huge spikes in deaths related to heart disease and more. It's clear to see, many people are happier than ever, now that they own nothing. As you can see, I am a very optimisic type of guy.

Not all countries have the infrastructure and capacity to register and report all deaths. In richer countries with high-quality mortality reporting systems, nearly 100% of deaths are registered. But in many low- and middle-income countries, undercounting of mortality is a serious issue. The UN estimates that, in “normal” times, only two-thirds of countries register at least 90% of all deaths that occur, and some countries register less than 50% - or even under 10% - of deaths. During the pandemic the actual coverage might be even lower.

I worked through the entire pandemic except for the 3 weeks where we got it in our household and had to take off because of the 14 day rule that was in place not because we were very sick. It was literally the sniffles with a sore throat for all 5 of us.

Do you think, that the Extream higher numbers in excess deaths is the United States, could be related to the government economic incentives to hospitals per COVID death patients ?

GOV are easily ruling out deaths due to vaccine side effects cause they consider a vaccinated individual those who have 2vacc+booster+2 weeks. That process can easily take 2 months. Most side effects will be spread within that frame period due to gauss distribution. Make the law...make the cheat.

A major problem with anonymised data sets is that they do not 'stand alone', if researchers have available to them numerous sources of data, some sets anonymised others not, which they do, then they can and do combine them in ways which break the anonymising features of data sets to reveal the identities of individuals. This is apparently not difficult and has been demonstrated by data analysts numerous times already...

A combination of direct and indirect adverse side effects of the vaccines AND the stress of the lockdowns which definitely made the immune system very weak (more suseptible to any disease), and it also unquestionably lead to a lot more domestic violence, drug abuse, mental health issues, etc.

Wow. Never thought of that one. Many families were likely affected by differences of opinion on personal health choices. How many friends and family have been divided? How many women have ended up homeless as a result? How many children have been held back from learning, development, and mentally affected by seeing and hearing fear stories all around them? How do we measure all these aspects?

RICH COUNTRIES have more Obesity linked to diabetes, lower levels of Vitamin D through urban lifestyles, lower fibre in their diets and tend to die in hospitals where they are tested and counted, where as poor countries treat them as old age deaths.

So is 15 Million excess deaths a lot globally when put into perspective, what's the typical excess death rate between good and bad flu years in the past? It's a miniscule percentage of 7.8 billion people especially when you consider how many deaths and lives and livelyhoods impacted negatively the policy has caused.

Hi Rod, you make a very good point, the first thing I did which John left out is to work out how many people in the world actually die each year from all causes, the number I come up with is eighty million on the understanding that the average human life-span is one hundred years, 7.8 billion divided by one hundred gives us the number at of near the one I use. The other very significant factor is that the same percentage of the total population does not die each year!, the percentage varies for a large number of reasons, so excess deaths always has to be related to the period including several adjacent years, Sweden fpr example had a very low total death number in 2018, lower than it had ever been!, it would therefore be reasonable to expect a higher total the following year, which is exactly what happened!, the same thing also applies to the UK. Cheers, Richard.
