Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating "stuff." So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It's all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

First of all..thank you. You did an awesome job of explaining the information without making me feel stupid. I was able to follow along with your instructions and came away with more knowledge on my way to installing a solar system of my own. Keep up the great work.

First, your production quality is top notch. I just upgraded my coach to the Battle Born batteries and have the same WFCO Power Center. In my case, I swapped out the power converter/charge to the lithium compatible board. It’s good to know that when I add solar to the system that I can simply disconnect that charger/converter. It looks like I have a good plan of action to add solar to my rig. Thanks again!

When you get down to it, this takes a good amount of thought. That being said, both of you have made this process as user friendly as possible. Everything else I’ve seen has left me more confused in the end than I was at the start. So thank you for going in depth but at the same time keeping it simple. What am I going to use? How much power will I consume? What equipment will need to power the consumption. How will I hook this up, and how much will these different parts cost? You’ve answered all of these questions as flawlessly as possible. You two did great!

You two do an excellent job, I have been experimenting with solar power for years and took down my shed solar system when I moved two years ago, I have yet to set it up on my now barn but life changes have put me on a different path. I will probably go ahead and install my solar system for my short term use and the next owners of this home. The wife and I have decided to basically put our lives up for sale and get rid of our too many vehicles and the $5,000 bed we just finished paying for on a 0% interest loan and buy and RV and set out as nomads to see the country. Part of that endeavor is going to involve budgeting our money and part of budgeting our money is going to involve things like using renewable energy such as solar and possibly even wind to generate a portion of our power. We are currently shopping for our home on wheels and we plan to do any modifications while we still have a sticks and bricks home, because after that it would be far more awkward for obvious reasons. I submitted my email and will be contacting you through KZfaq and your store when the time comes. What strikes me most about you two is how you have found something you both love doing together, I hope my wife and I will be as fortunate once we get to where we want to be, we're looking at a two year time horizon realistically. God Bless you both.

I wish RV makers would give more thought to how they decide where to put things on the roof...to maximize that space for solar panels (or MORE panels) the owner is likely to add. Often, the AC, vents, skylights, TV antenna and other such items break up (waste!) open/available roof space which in turn messes up installing panels efficiently as there is little sizable open-space left for them. When I get my RV, I plan to go solar big-time...but may not be able to get all the panels I need on the roof, especially on a smaller RV (Class B or small TT) with less roof space to begin with, so an efficient layout of vents/skylights/antenna/AC is even more important. Otherwise, to add more panels they'd have to be "remote" -- panels you mount on the roof of the tow vehicle (if you're towing a TT) or outside each time you set up camp (if you have a Class B)...doable, but not as easy as putting them all up on the roof of the RV in the very beginning (set up once and be done with it). Great video (!) on what you did and it's one to save (a "how to" reference/instructable) for anyone wanting to go solar -- and doing the labor themselves (to save the $$$ professionals charge for doing it) -- on THEIR RV. BTW: I'm also hoping the prices of lithium "RV batteries" come down big-time in the not-too-distant future...they're outrageous presently. :-( -- BR

Don't worry, lithium batteries are already like 10x cheaper than in 2010, and still dropping. For now if you are on a budget you could use different kinds, they just aren't as good.

This is why I removed my Roof-top AC unit. Put on 4x335 (1005) watts of solar. I will be running a small window AC (450watts), and then upgrade to a Mini-split AC unit, (455watts) I have 300(3x100) Amp hours of Lithium BB Batteries. I hope my math is right... if anything I would add more solar to the SIDE of the RV for those winter months and or for the shade in the summer months.

PS Upsizing will be easy with the appropriate changes in wire size to support the current loads. A short video on current and wire sizing ( for safety and line loss reduction) might be worthwhile. Also a explanation of the advantage of oversizing to support future loads without having to rewire the system. For example more PV panels, larger battery bank and charge controller, larger inverter, combiner box and buss bars, fuses, shunts etc. Again well presented! Bert

Just a thought on your shore power hookup, since you only wanted to power your outlets, why didnt you take that breaker, wire it to your inverter/charger shore input, from there, take the white wire from the breaker and hook it to your inverter output, that way you have a breaker protecting the input to your inverter, you can isolate and power off your inverter if you needed and less wire modifications
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I'm not following what you are talking about. It's okay though. The way we did it works perfectly for our purposes and want excessive wriring modification. It sounds like you know what you are doing though, so feel free do it however you feel like it'll work best for you.
@piperpilot72

you branched your shore power (orange wire) to go between your panel and the charge inverter, to make things "simpler" with less splices and more protection, you could could have taken the breaker that was assigned to those outlets, wired that to the shore power of your inverter/charger, then taken a junction box and run the wire originally going to the breaker, junction it and connect it for more length to the output of the inverter. Your shore power would power through the panel, then through the breaker to the charge/inverter, from that point it'd go to the circuit for those outlets

I checked out their list and some items are not available right now, but the total is roughly $5,000. That's not too bad to be honest. I was expecting double that.

I'm confused, why would you use 4 x 100 watt solar panels when much more efficient, 300+ watt panels are available? Are you promoting Renogy panels for profit?
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 5 жыл бұрын
A 300 watt panel wouldn't fit on the roof of this truck camper. Do you have a question on how to size solar panels for your camper? [Although we DO make a commission on products purchased through our links, we aren't necessarily promoting renogy. We can promote ANY solar panel available on Amazon. We just happened to pick renogy]

Here is a thought on bigger is better. 16 years ago I decided to switch from a loud generator to solar pannels for my bus conversion. Back then E-bay was my friend, so I started shoping. At that time not many people was useing Solar on RVs But Sail boats was a pioneering goldmine. I baught two 120 W pannels and a couple of 100 w. marine pannels All marketed and branded as Shell Energy products. I used these for a year or two as a carry on and portable set up building my own ground level supports. The third year I was able to pick up 39 Sunforce 15 W pannels for just over two dollars a watt. I found that the newer pannels put out more power in less light than my older larger pannels per sq inch of serface. I was happy about that and not totaly surprized because tech was and is continuasly improving. I was continuing to use all of my pannels to keep my ten deep cycle batteries charged. I ran two seprate circuts and seperated my battery banks as the four large pannels was rated at close to the same Watts as the group of smaller Sunforce pannels. It was all working well untill while on a two week outing a gust of wind tipped my array of larger pannels over and when I put it all back up I found that one of my 120 W pannels had lost continuity in one of the cells and that entire array went from 440 watts down to 320 W. I got to thinking if I loose one expensive large pannel that brings me to less than 75 percent of my normal out put And my smaller pannels would have to lose 9 pannels to equal that loss. By the way it has been 14 years sence that event and I have expanded my group of smaller pannels (all Sunforce) and have only had five pannels stop working for one reason or another. All of the large shell pannels have been retired. It is also easy to arrange the smaller pannels arround obsticles when I mounted them on the roof.

When cutting holes in metal its always worth treating the newly exposed metal with a little protective paint. Another Sprinter build did this step and it makes sense. Seen many boat repairs where old roof mounted things were removed and exposed lots of rust around the hole rims, despite liberal amounts of sikaflex. Shouldn't be quite as bad on motorhomes but its still metal and an easy step which takes seconds so worth doing. Cheers for sharing.

New sub, this was a good video. I'm learning about solar. Right now I plan to get only 200 watt solar panel for a car refrigerator and anything that may need to be recharged. Phone. Light etc. Plan on doing a road trip from Phoenix to Alaska and back with my dog. The reason for instead of a cooler is.. a refrigerator can store food. Ice etc so don't have to go to a store forawhile.
