Campervan Overhead Cabinets (Spacious & lightweight!) - Part 1 | Transit Van Conversion E40

We're making our campervan overhead cabinets to give us some essential storage space for our clothes, with a built-in bookshelf too! We wanted our van cabinets to be roomy but lightweight so we built them using thin birch plywood and pine strips.
It's another very DIY project to scribe everything to the curves of the van, but we're happy with the result!
Now they just need some doors... next time!

Great job Tim & Abi, I've always loved your approach to your build and it's coming along beautifully, I may have been tempted to hang the cupboards using a long single french cleat and then just a fixing at the bottom inside the cabs, that way you could've had swappable cabinets and easy to remove if needed for wiring plumbing or needing more space for carrying a load etc. Anyway enough of my ramblings, thanks for the update and cant wait to see the 2nd part 👍

Thank you very much! That's an interesting idea, we've not gone down that route but are setup is sort of similar. We've added a long rail to the back of the cabinets and then bolted the whole thing onto the van wall, then secured with a few screws in the bottom to stop it moving laterally. So we can remove the whole cabinet structure as one unit if we ever need to, unlikely for us on a casual basis but possibly if we need to do some extra wiring or something like you say. Cleats aren't something we've seen much before so thanks for the comment, could be a cool way to make a modular area too 🙂👍

I watch a Japanese carpenter's KZfaq channel called Shoyan (@ShoyanJapaneseCarpenter) and I admire his skills and precision with the woodworking. You two are nowhere near close to his precision and skill (wait, this is not a criticism), but I am in awe of how clever and attentive to details your van build is. That cabinet is just next-level excellent work. That groove on the table saw fitted like a glove. Congratulations and looking forward to the next video. Thanks for the content.

Thanks, yeah there's some amazing master craftsmen out there that are almost mesmerising to watch. We've enjoyed developing our woodworking skills pretty much from zero at the start of the build and it's really satisfying when something comes together that you've made yourself 🙂

Perfect timing, I have the same van and have just started building my overhead cabinets.. I also have wooden strips bolted to the wall like you have, but I've made the back of the cupboards out of 12mm ply so I can screw it to those strips in loads of places. Bit concerned about the weight though (I've used 34x34mm for the frame), yours looks much lighter! All your videos have been so helpful, thanks for taking the time to make them!
@SelfBuiltStories

Awesome, and no worries thanks for watching them! 👍 And yeah it's amazing how quickly weight can start to build up when it feels like you're just working with a few scraps of wood. We tried to make them as light as we could, which ended up being around 11kg for the complete piece with all the doors and hardware. We have ours bolted to the van walls so they're nice and secure, they've been very handy to have. Good luck with yours!

I'm watching in order and wondering if youd put anti-theft glass film on the windows to stop them smashing through and metal lock protecting plates on all the doors? It's something that concerns me with all the van thefts of late.

That looks just awesome, you two. And your craftmanship is outstanding as usual. Did you find the spraypainting saving you some time during the build or did you get a better finish? Was one run with the spraygun enough or did you give it an intermediate sand and second coat? Looking forward to your next instalment! Cheers from Canada and stay safe! 🚐☁🍀
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 10 ай бұрын
Cheers! We found it saved time once we figured out how to use it properly 😛 It was a bit of trial and error at first to get the right consistency of paint so it wasn't either too watery or too thick clogging up the gun, but once we hit the sweet spot it was great and made it much easier to get a good finish in all the inside hard to reach areas. But we found for small flat things it was still quicker and easier to roller most of the time, with the faff to have to setup and then clean the sprayer afterwards. So we reserved it mostly for the bigger 3D things. And we did a coat of primer and then one possibly two top coats, can't remember now! Enjoy Canada!

We used a mixture, 6mm birch ply for the sides, 3mm regular hardwood ply for the bottom, and redwood pine for the framing. Also used up some of the existing ply that was in the van when we got it for the middle divider. And we got most of our wood from www.totemtimber.co.uk/ in Plymouth which is great, with some bits from Wickes etc. 👍
