Wittenham Clumps is the name for a pair of wooded chalk hills in the Thames Valley near Little Wittenham. Round Hill, is 120m above sea-level. Castle Hill site of an Iron Age hill fort is 110 m above sea-level. not normally considered one of The Clumps, is Brightwell Barrow, further to the south-east. The summits are wooded by the oldest beech tree plantings in England from 1740s. North slopes overlooking villages and towns whose sites of the first settlements of the English. The Clumps are the most visited outdoor site in the county of Oxfordshire, attracting over 200,000 visitors a year. Wittenham Clumps are near to the River Thames, and good views can be had from the Thames Path along the river. The white-walled reactor buildings of the Joint European Torus, site of the world's first successful controlled nuclear fusion experiments, can be seen around 6 km to the north-west from the clumps. The hillfort on Castle Hill. The earliest earthworks date to the late Bronze Age. In 2004 Castle Hill was under excavation by Oxford Archaeology, and Time Team was charged with investigating the surrounding landscape to find any trace of activity that could be associated with the Clumps. This revealed the remains of a Romano-British house with tesserae (mosaic) floors and painted wall plaster on the southern slope of Round Hill. The area also contained an Iron-Age cobbled floor, together with post holes that could have related to a structure. Among the many artefacts found in the area are an oval bronze shield around 35 cm in diameter, retrieved from the nearby river Isis in 1836[13] and the 70 cm long Wittenham Sword and scabbard, found in 1982 and dating from the Late Iron Age (120 BC - AD 43). The Clumps was the filming location for the Radiohead webcast video of the band's song "Faust Arp".

Beautiful views of Wittenham Clumps there, and well done on looking so unfazed by that very cold night! I should visit Wittenham Clumps at some point, it looks like a great location. I used to live not far from there (well, near Reading), but I wasn't very adventurous back in those days and it seems like I missed out on a lot of great spots in the area!

Thank you. Camped there a few times. Some great views from there. Also not so far from a good part of the Ridgeway national trail along one the best bits of the Grims ditch network. If going by trains there two stations in the area :)

I bought one of those Jack Wolfskins Gossamer tents after watching your wet Cumbrian Way adventure. I reckon they can handle anything the weather throws at them.

Nice setup, in the winter I also use my bivy inside the tent mainly to stop any freezing condensation on sleeping bag. Best part of winter camping gor me is lack of other people, much more peaceful.

Stay warm out there! I'm looking forward to an overnighter outdoors as well. I just bought a 0°C rated sleeping bag and I'm getting a bit worried it might not be warm enough haha! Luckily it stays about 2°C here at night, not quite the freezing temps you're having there.

It should be fine most the time if your camping in England we mostly get mild wet winters due to wind coming from the west and south most the time. The north wind often does not last long enough for a very cold winter :) I would however make sure you get good thermals and maybe take a hot water bottle just incase. :)

Enjoyed that Rich. I was out skipping it the other night in minus 9 with a frozen beard. Ha ha! Yeah, that's cold mate - a decent camp though. I wonder what Neolithic people did to keep warm. Loads of animal skin probably. Well, take care out there. Mark

Hi Mick. I only wear a good pair of winter thermals in the sleeping bag. My sleeping bag in a Rab asscent 900 which is good for Garingorms in winter so -9c i remained warm even with out a hot water bottle, I did also have a OEX bush pro bivvi over the sleeping bag and a silk liner in it. I used two rollmats. The down jacket i used as a cusion but if it got even colder than -9c i could used that as well for back up. All best Richard
