Camping for 4 Days Alone on an Island MEGA-Site

This trip was planned at the very last minute. Like, literally the day before I left. I had a bit of a crazy plan too. I was going to try and get myself an island MEGA-site for the 4 days. I was aiming for a campsite on the southwestern tip of a large island. It sits up high on a cliff, and offers a beautiful view west from the large pebble beach at the front of the site. But the reason I called this idea “crazy” was because I was hoping that the three adjacent campsites-all within immediate walking distance-would be empty. If the three other campsites stayed unoccupied, it would give me one MEGA-site all to myself.

The first time I paddled across Opeongo more than 20 years ago now it was like glass (like you had on Tea), but ever since I've not once seen such a calm stretch in the park - what an incredible way to open your trip! So envious!!

Opeongo is a beast of a lake! I was fortunate to have a dead calm day on Opeongo a couple years ago, but yeah I was shocked how calm the wind was for this entire trip on North Tea. The “heat wave” trip that I reference throughout this video, that was another story… lol (I’m publishing that video next week)

Hey, sorry if I missed it, but do you know where that campsite @ 8:14 mark is? Might look to booking that site at some point if possible. Thank you!

That's the northernmost campsite on the large island on North Tea West. In Algonquin Park you don't book specific campsites though, you book the lake (in this case North Tea is split into the West Arm and East Arm) and then campsites are first-come-first-serve. So you can't actually book that specific campsite. I have a lot more information and details on my website that you can check out if you're interested algonquinbeyond.com

@@AlgonquinBeyond you're awesome, and I'm looking into purchasing Jeff maps, seem super helpful. I tend to hike/camp with my cat so I'm enjoying your videos since it seems you travel with your dog - thus it seems you are careful when choosing portage routes. Very helpful, looking forward to replicating one of your trips in September :)

Why don’t you use a double bladed paddle ?

It's a completely different experience paddling with a double-blade, one that I personally don't enjoy.

What a nice trip! calm water, a great campsite, perfect weather, clear skies at night, and above all, amazing company #bestcattledog. Driftwoodpaddle proves, people who camp are the nicest 😍. Cheers Bud ✌️
