Camping in South Africa | Mountain Splendour | Drakensberg Mountains

The Easter weekend saw us camping in the Drakensberg mountains, at a camp site called Mountain Splendour. Nestled amongst the oak trees on a working farm in the foothills of Cathkin Peak, Mountain Splendour is a beautiful camp site with plenty of activities for the whole family. There are plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area, along with restaurants, pubs, farm stalls, and arts and crafts places.
The camp site is electrified, and has a pool, and playground for the kids. The ablutions are recently renovated, clean, and well maintained.
Cathkin Peak is in the central Drakensberg region, and is situated about four and a half hours from Johannesburg, and 3 hours from Durban.

My 4x4 offramp camping trailer is a Metalian Bowhunter trailer with a Tentco Junior TTT. My vehicle is a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (Thunder Edition) 2.0l bi-turbo diesel, with a Front Runner Slimline II rack fitted over the load bed.

Quick question, I am organising a 3 country camp in Southern Africa. What objects can we not bring with cross border?

Howzit mate, I am sorry but I can’t answer this one for you. I do most of my trips in South Africa. I very rarely cross the border into Namibia, Botswana, or Zim. Last time I went into another SADC country by car was about 10 years ago. A good person to ask is Christoff from Get Out Go, or Ryan from 4x4Ventures. They both travel into Namibia and Botswana often, and they are both really good at answering questions - so I am sure they will be able to help you. Another good resource is Tracks for Africa or 4x4community.co.za

Is it a safe area for my wife and i to go camp there?

Yes, it is a safe area and a safe campsite. We’ve been to the area many times and have never had any issues. There are plenty of hotels, B&Bs, campsites etc. in the area, along with restaurants, pubs, shops, and outdoor adventure places. Mountain Splendour itself is fenced, and there are security guards on the property.
