Awesome weekend, thank you for sharing. Love the eastside, you are in Uncle's backyard and childhood stomping ground. Nothing to do with your fishing ability as Swanzy Beach park in Ka'aawa is not really known for shore fishing, in my opinion. The only exception is if Oama are running or in the winter and spring when Oio schools might be on the flats. You actually experienced some nice weather since the Eastside is more rainy, overcast and windy, sort of the direct opposite of the Westside. On the Eastside the water is often murky and you really have to watch the weather, winds and time of year when you dive. The swim you took from the park to what I would call the mouth of Kahana bay is very FAR! Good thing you were on the inside and that the surf and current was not up. Don't be fooled by that weekend conditions as the place can be very dangerous. During winter months if the surf is up crossing through the breakers could be catastrophic. As a side note, the area holds a famous local surf break called Crouching Lion which is said to rival North Shore's Pipeline. The spot is named after the rock formation on the mountain which looks like a "Crouching Lion" and is actually a tourist attraction which you probably already knew. It is not uncommon for tiger shark sightings and there even was an attack there inside the breakers. There is a river which empties into the ocean there, so during heavy rain the water gets really murky and at times brown/red dirt colored. The current outside the breakers can be treacherous, not for beginners, so again if you dive there you need to watch the weather. On a side note, when you got out of the water on the first dive and walked down the highway looking up at the houses on the hill, one of those houses is the home of Hawaii surf shaper legend Wade Tokoro who is from the Eastside and known worldwide as one of the best shapers who ever lived. If by chance he was around as you walked by, I am sure he would have greeted you as he is one of the most friendly and humble people you will ever meet. On another side note, On Fire Fishing's Joe Wadahara, who is a fire fighter, I think mentioned he was for a time at the Ka'aawa fire station which is across the park. He knows the Eastside as a lot of his content is from the Eastside fishing and diving. I believe you are correct that the tako in the shallow flat reef on the Eastside makes a different "hole" than in the deeper water and reef/rock structures on the South and West sides. On Fire Fishing has a lot of "find the tako" videos shot on the Eastside. Sorry so long winded, but thank you again for sharing your weekend adventure brought back some memories. Stay safe!
