Hi Liz, have you tested the Mountain Ultra 4 person tent? If not, is there any reason not to expect the same great results as the one and two person models? Have you tested the Lynx-4?
@CampingGuidance

@@RFCII Hey Richard! Thanks for the question! 🥰 Hmm I don't have the Mountain Ultra 4 though :( I only have the 1 and 2-person models. Hmm I don't think there would be different results, since the design is mostly the same, just different capacities. A couple viewers told me they bought the 3P I think! And it worked just as well 😁 And sadly I don't have the Lynx 4 either :( Just the 1 and 2. But I prefer the Mountain Ultra to the Lynx!

I've actually given up my camping days. I'm almost 60 years old, carry what a need only in a backpack on my motorcycle, and I'm just getting too old for it. I would camp because I wanted to find peace and quiet but now I find that there are so many idiots in four-wheel drive who can drive on the beach and it just messes up everything because they have no sense of the space they are in let alone that they go there to drink and be total idiots. So it's too hard for me. I've gone back to spending my millions and five star hotels and listening to the air conditioner. It's easier. But the camping was fun while I tried it. But why I'm riding this comment is I'm still listening to your videos because I like how you speak, I love your authenticity, and it is interesting to find out what tent works in the rain and ventilate properly because I never found it. Even though I was using the instant pop-up, that means the one you pull from the centre with the string not the round one because I ride a motorcycle. So, yeah it was fun for a while. But it's really good to listen to excellent KZfaqrs and you are one of them.

Is car camping really camping. I live in Korea, camping is big, but it is backing your car up to a wooden flat, popping the tent, and roasting meat and drinking that ugh (awful, sorry native Koreans, at 1.50 a bottle it is economical) soju. Sometimes they put tents up in gymnasiums type structures for camping. The tent is for privacy here, nothing else. Camping is a very loose term here. Very very few every hiked in to a remote site. I had no reason to post this other than camping here is not really camping as I knew it. I am gonna get a wawona 6 by notthface as the rain is brutal here so I was happy to get a direct recommendation. I am worried about the wooden flat size with the vestibule. Growing up Coleman was mostly crap, buy it in a thrifty store. They have not changed their biz model it seems

I don't understand how rainflies became so small. They should always be full length. Always. These less than full length rainfly tents are just worthless. It's beyond cheap. I just don't get it.

Hahaha yeahh I've reviewed my fair share of tents with tiny tiny rainflies! 😅 But I think a lot of tent manufacturers (just my hunch) have smaller rainflies to increase airflow and ventilation. It was a little stuffy sleeping in my Base Camp with the full fly. Not sure if this is correct though!

Thanks for this wet review, Liz. As a festival goer I had the "chance" to thoroughly test both a basic Quechua 2s and a 2-people MT-900 Forclaz, which is Decathlon's trekking sub-brand, and I never experienced a drop in it. No wonder why the 2-seconds is the go-to choice for homeless people all across Europe. If you have to live in it, at least, it won't let you down.

Hey Stéphane! Thank you so much for your comment and I'm really glad you liked this review! 🥰 Oh wow and I'm really glad that the Decathlon tents kept you dry! So far I've heard no bad reviews at all about the brand, really love it for its value for money and how reliable it is. Would you recommend the MT900, or anything else instead as a good backpacking tent? And yeah I was in Europe a while ago too and remember seeing so many Decathlon tents. I think every single one was Decathlon. Glad that at least they have access to great tents.

We went from a Dutch cotton tent (12 years old, the nylon webbing started to rot away - the fabric was still perfectly fine) to a Decathlon technical cotton, inflatable tent. We had to get this in a pinch, as otherwise our camping holiday would have been ruined. We were very surprised by its quality. This is a 5-person tunnel tent (the giant cotton tent was meant for 6. As our daughter is grown-up and started to work, we thought we could go a tad smaller), and really very comfortable. Seam-taping everywhere, no loose threads, and overall very well thought out.

Update on my MT-900, now a bit seasoned : last week-end I attended the Hellfest open air and we experienced a day of heavy rain, which allowed me to 1) see Metallica at like 20m from the barrier and 2) confirm the total waterproofness of the tent.

Great reviews and tips! I have used Ozark Trail products for 20 years. But I always pair them with an appropriately sized camping tarp whenever I expect rain or stiff winds. I have never had a wet tent. But this does bring up a point. The camping tarps I use are true camping tarps rather big box retailer tarps. I use the DD Hammock 3x3 and 4x4 tarps and this year I will add the 5x5 to my collection. When one adds the cost of these tarps my combined cost for any of my setups is $130-$220 which is not cheap. However I love the flexibility this combination allows since the independent tarp can be set up in multiple configurations over the tent without being limited by any preset guy/connection points. Plus in extremely foul weather the tarps take the beating rather than the tent poles and tent fabric. My tarps create a nearly bomb proof sanctuary and have withstood multi-day high wind rain events without failing. I do acknowledge the bigger the tent the harder the challenge it is to pair the tent with a tarp that can cover it entirely. In that case one may to accept “significant tarp coverage” as a compromise position.

Thank you so much Phil! 🥰 And yeah I agree it's a great move to pair a tarp with the Ozark tent. And thanks for the heads up on the DD Hammock and tarps! I've never heard of them 😅 But now they're on my radar! Have you used any other tarps though? I may want to get a few in the future for testing. And yeah your setups aren't cheap but they're flexible like you said, and works fantastic! 🤩

@@CampingGuidance The only other true camping tarp I’ve used in a serious real world situation is my Very first camping tarp-a Kelly Noah 12 (12 ft. In length). I used it to cover my hammock in a minor ice storm with 20 mph wind gusts. It worked like a champ! I stayed completely dry while my tent camping friends all got water inside their tents. There are a load of competing camping tarp products that others swear by as adamantly as I vouch for the DD Hammock product line. Aqua Quest, War Bonnet and Onetigis are just three of the many other companies that make excellent camping tarps. The best ones can be found in use in the hammock camping community because there, failure of your rain coverage is not an option!

great information. I've been using Coleman for some time. They aren't the best but I meticulously seal the seams inside and out put a tarp on inside that comes up just above the seams and I've weathered many rains without getting wet. Not into spending several hundred dollars on a tent. Live in the south, camp April through November.

Wow! You smashed that one out of the ballpark! I was a bit skeptical at first. You've done such a good job with your reviews before, I was wondering what new info you could have included. As it turns out, not new info exactly, but the summary and points on what make tents great in rain makes this a great video. The funny thing is many people are super happy with their Ozark Trail tents. May be they were lucky, or may be they never experienced heavy rain and/or high wind, but I personally agree with you that budgets tents are inexpensive for a reason. That said, cheaper tents can still work if a tarp is put over them (set up like a shelter, not draping one over the tent), so long as the ground is not flooded. That is in fact a quite popular thing to do in N America. One good thing of that set up is that you can pack up the tent in the rain and don't have to deal with a soggy went tent back home. Out of the five tents in the video, my favourite would be the Wawona 6. However, spacious as it is, I want more enclosed space because I don't like bugs in my tent and stuff, and the open bottom vestibule does not help. In addition, I want really easy and quick set up, so my top choice at this point remains to be Gazelle tents, even though they are not the best in heavy rain in terms of the small rain fly.

Aww thank you so much as always! 🥰 I'm really glad that you enjoyed this review too even though I'm literally just collating all the rain tests that I did in the past. I have 3 more "Best" tent collations that my editor is working on now, so hopefully it's not too boring with not a whole lot of new info 😅 Bear with me! I'm a bit bored too so I'm currently testing camping lights and I wanna get into that this year 😁 And yeah!! I can't figure out whether it's them being lucky, or me being unlucky with both the Ozark tents I had 😅 Oh and yes thank you so much for the input on the tarps! That's a really great idea. Do you have any recommendations for tarps you like? Right now I only have one from Decathlon, nothing else. I'm eyeing a Snow Peak one but they're so expensive. Oh yeah the open bottom vestibule of the Wawona isn't great. I had so many tiny little bugs in the vestibule hiding from the rain 😅 And yeah I do think Gazelle is a great easy setup tent. I hope to get in touch with the company sooner or later to get more gear to test 😁

@@CampingGuidance Can't wait to see your reviews on camping lights. I have been bitten by the Coleman naphtha (a.k.a. white gas) camping gears bug, both stoves and lamps. I have acquired a couple of each and can't wait to use them on my next camping trip. It would be fun if you can find and do a "review" on one of those nostalgic old camping lamps or stoves (not necessarily Coleman). As for tarps, I try to get something that is of decent quality, but not the expensive types that some backpackers use. So no brand-named stuff, but whatever I can find in local stores like Walmart or Canadian Tire (I suppose you can guess the latter is "indigenous" to Canada 🤣). I would just need it for a few things: give shelter from heat, keep tree tar and bird poop from the tent, and not have to pack a soggy wet tent. I haven't put one up so far because it has not been necessary. Erecting a tent under a tarp shelter also overcomes the shortcomings of a small rain fly. We also use tarps to create a kitchen and dining area when we have a big group.

I have several older Coleman tents and they all leak in the rain. I have determined that Coleman is best for fair weather campers that never camp in the rain. I recently replaced the Coleman tents with Decathlon tents. The last time I was out we were in a Decathlon Quechua MH100 3 person dome tent. There was light rain that lasted for hours and not a drop of water got into the tent nor were the walls even damp.

Thank you so much for the input! 🥰 And same here man! My Coleman tents were all pretty leaky, I was especially frustrated with their lack of seam taping. And Decathlon tents are definitely the way to go especially if you're camping in rain. I haven't heard a single bad word about them so far.

WOW, you do an amazing job. Loved this video. I travel full time on My Royal Enfield Motorcycle. I have been using Wenzel Jack Pine 4 for 3 years. I'm on my 4th tent now. Because it's my home I don't care about price. I like the size 7x8 for me my gear and saddlebags, 8x8 would be nicer. Love the big back window, white fly to stay cool, mesh doesn't start until about 18 inches up for more privacy when not using the fly and draft protection when it chills down at night, 4 side pockets & overhead shelf, like the mud mat. I don't like the fiberglass poles, and the worst is the one for the door hoop, that always breaks right away. Their warranty is great, just don't like that I have to use it. Once I got a whole new tent because they were out of poles. The worst part is the floor is not tube type and as I learned from you it's an inverted seam that is not sealed and the leakage that I've had these two days of rain is why I found your excellent video. My previous Jack Pine 4s leaked and I tried liquid seam sealer but this time think I will try seam tape. Do you know of a tape you recommend? I really do like this tent including the small pack size for strapping to my motorcycle, I just wish they put a touch more quality in the product. If I get tired of bailing water I may try the Teton Ultra 4 as you have shown us. Thank you!

@@CampingGuidance Thank you for the reply. Not having a home so I can get the same products I get what ever is in the local stores. Walmart, Coghlans Seam Seal. Gear Aid has a lot of products. GEAR AID Seam Grip FC appears to be close to the product I have. Also thinking of using their GEAR AID Tenacious Tape Repair and Seam Tape to completely cover the inverted seam they use for the floor to wall seam.

You made a good video about these tents. Much better than most product review videos. However I don’t share the same opinion about the North Face Wawona 6. I have that tent and I believe it fails in regards to being waterproof due to the short rain fly. I love its huge vestibule and the fact that I can stand up in it; I’m 6’-3”. But I have witnessed serious moisture entering the tent either through the floor or side that isn’t covered with the rain fly. Oh, and I do have the foot print, but I have found the floor quite wet. I believe it’s due to the short rain fly.

I will say Ozark trail doesn't have the best quality control but it's been good so far. I have had it in a light rain and it did not leak. I then had it up when there was heavy rain and I did get some leaking from the loops that hold the tent door up when left open. For the amount of rain and not having done anything to the tent I think it was very little leakage. I did have a tarp under my tent. I have now seam sealed only the loops and will test it out again when I get some rain expected next week. I am short and this text is just for me and my two kids, it might be too small for you.

Hey there, back to the grind! Our camping trip was a blast, but it had its fair share of craziness. The first night was pleasant, with gentle rain. We opened/hanged the vestibule door using two poles, creating a cozy shelter. We even managed to enjoy the view from the bed. The second day and night were intense. There was some rain, but the real challenge was the relentless wind that blew throughout the day. I took action, staking the tent securely in every direction to prevent it from taking off. I invested in 12 MSR Groundhog tent stakes, adding them to the ones that came with the tent, and also picked up some sturdy rope stakes for extra security. By the third day, the rain and wind had intensified. We had to close the vestibule door tightly due to the strong winds. I couldn't shake the fear that our tent might fly away and ruin the trip. Despite the anxiety-inducing weather, my girlfriend and I were grateful for the reliability of our tent. Your testing of the Wawona 6 tent assured us that it could handle rain without leaking, but the wind posed a new challenge. I considered staying awake to be on guard against any sudden gusts. We really thought we were in the middle of a storm. (Going home, the road was closed for a moment because there was a rock slide!). On the last day before checkout, there was no rain but everything felt damp. The stakes were still firmly planted in the ground, but I'd recommend investing in higher-quality stakes like I mentioned above for future trips. Despite its size, packing up the tent took some time, but we appreciated the spaciousness it provided. We were able to move around and cook inside comfortably, even when it was raining outside. We were pleasantly surprised that the tent poles held up well against the strong winds. Once home, we made sure to hang the wet top cover and footprint to dry. Overall, it was a camping experience unlike any other, especially due to the intense wind. I'm grateful for the reliability of our tent-it truly saved the day. If I were to make any changes or recommendations, opting for the Wawona 6 instead of the 8 might be worth considering if space isn't a priority. It would be more manageable, especially in windy conditions. But overall, I highly recommend the Wawona tent! It kept us dry and comfortable throughout our 4-day, 3-night (we extended it) trip to Big Sur! Thank you for testing and helping find the right tent for us! My GF loves camping now even with the storm we experienced! (To all, let me know if you have any questions!)

I wish I could have been there to test out my tent too! 😅 Don't think I have such crazy winds where I am at all haha 😅 But it was a really smart move to go with the groundhog stakes! They're definitely some of the best stakes around. And wow, can I just ask - did any of the tent poles bend at all, or were they totally fine? I'm curious about that. Also, I think there might be upcoming sales on the Wawona 6 if you want to exchange your 8 for that instead! I'm not sure exactly when, but REI should be having one within the next couple of months (that's what I heard). Really happy to hear that your gf loves camping now! The right gear and the right experience is definitely a great way to convert a non-camper 😉

None of the tent poles got bent, despite the high winds! The vestibule pole took a beating, but surprisingly, it didn't get bent. I'm really pleased with this tent. While the 6-person option was tempting for just the two of us, we opted for the 8-person version. This way, we can use it for family trips and enjoy the extra space. It's handy for setting up a short table for meals or other activities. The colored poles make assembly much easier, although setting up the vestibule still requires a bit of time! You should compare tent stakes, kitchen gear, food, coolers, pillows, etc because like many, we really appreciate the details you put in each video! Thanks again! @@CampingGuidance

@@HDMOVIECREATOR2012 Thank you so much for the update again! 🥰 I'm so glad to hear that the poles didn't bend at all. I heard that the newer version (the one that we have) has better poles than the previous one (the single-walled one), so that is probably why it didn't bend. Ah, the 8P will definitely give you more space. That makes sense. The 6P didn't feel like a 6P tent because of the small base area hahaha. Awww I really appreciate that and all your comments and kind words 🥰 I'm currently testing out a bunch of lights, then after that fans. I definitely wanna get through to stakes, kitchen gear, coolers, and more too in the future! I hope I can push out more content faster too cos right now I'm quite slow 😅

Hey, I live in southern louisiana (hot, humid, rainy weather) and I’m new to camping lol. I’m trying to decide between the Teton Mountain Ultra 2 person tent and the Naturehike Mongar 2 person tent. The weight of the Teton (7lbs) is my only concern because I do intend on backpacking soon as well. From what I can tell, other than weight, they are pretty much the same tent. I’ve heard wonderful things about both companies, but I have seen some negative thoughts on Naturehike’s product durability. Any advice?
@CampingGuidance
@CampingGuidance Ай бұрын
I haven't tested any of Naturehike's products yet, but they are very popular in Asia, where I live. I've heard only good things about them from my friends though, so I think it's worth a shot since you do intend on backpacking. The Teton might be a little too heavy.

I'm a camping newbie, so please excuse me if this may be a dumb question: Wouldn't it be best to put a tarp over the tent in addition to the rainfly if you know that there's a chance to rain? By the tests you did, I think the best thing to do is not to directly expose the rainfly to the rain, and just use that as a last line of defence, right?
@CampingGuidance
@CampingGuidance 3 ай бұрын
Hey feel free to ask any question that you may have! No question is a dumb question. And yes! A tarp over the tent in addition to the rainfly is DEFINITELY a great way to increase waterproofing. But the thing is not a lot of people want to buy another piece of gear, and it's another thing to set up, so that depends on your personal preference.
@dcfavorite

@@CampingGuidance I mean, if you know there's a good chance that it would rain, and a tarp just folds up nicely into a small pouch, why risk getting wet, right?

Hi Steven! You're welcome, and thanks so much for watching all my videos! 🥰 Hmm, well Caddis has really good rain protection for an instant cabin tent, but compared to these here, it's a leaky tent. Cabin tents in my experience don't tend to have very good waterproofing :(

@@CampingGuidancehi. I really wanted to get the Caddis or the gazelle t4 but because the top is open and vented I don't think it will keep me warm in very cold weather (20 degrees fahrenheit). Any other good popup 6p tents that do great in the rain and cold weather that are under $300?

@@stevenscop Hey again Steven! Hmmm if you need a tent that'll keep you warm in the cold weather and does well in rain... I don't think any of them will really do that well for you. I think you'll definitely be better off with a regular tent with a full rainfly instead, sadly :(

The problem I always found with tents is that the length was too short. I'm only 1.8 m high, but I need at least 2.2 to 2.4 m to be able to clear the slant of the tent. But it's just so hard to find. It's hard to find long tents. I don't want to touch the inner tent. I just want to sleep.

You make me feel like being short is a good thing! 🤣 Although I have height envy and I'd love to be taller hahaha. Oh yeah that's the problem with small tents, you need a longer length to clear the slant. I didn't think you would need up to 2.4m though! 😲 That's quite hard to find I think, I haven't come across any yet :( But if I do, I'll let you know! (If you still wanna go camping next time haha)
