An unexpected localized tornado outbreak occurred in northeastern Illinois on July 12, 2023 as the atmosphere recovered in the wake of thunderstorm activity earlier in the day, ahead of a compact area of low pressure in an area with very favorable kinematics for the time of year. This was the tornado that was likely responsible for tree and property damage in the Elgin area. Several other tornadoes were also reported in the Chicago Metro.
