Even if the ref can disallow that goal, it still seems a bit petty to hold that against Argentina tbh.

It would be ridiculous to disallow it. And nobody should hold it against Argentina; they were worthy winners of the WC.

yeah. I researched it very carefully. And I confirm Messi's goal is completely valid. You will be very surprised. Why? Since the rules state "If, after a goal was scored, the referee notices, before the game restarts, that there was an extra person on the field when the goal was scored", that means only if The ref has seen, the goal as invalid , and if the ref does not see it, the goal will still count. This law is entirely up to the arbitrator. Unless there is verifiable evidence that the referee has seen but still concedes the goal, it is a violation of the law. If not, that goal is completely valid

England's final goal in 1966 was also allowed with fans on the pitch. I know pitch invasions were common back then. But theoretically, would this same rule apply for that, since it were fans not subs who were on the pitch?

Fans would be considered ‘outside agents’ so play would continue unless the referee felt they were impacting the game.

Disallowing a goal in those circumstances would be ridiculous. They are not going to change the laws for that.

Their own laws (the actual FIFA laws) state that the goal would have to be disallowed, even if the ref notices it later. It's in the free kick section. The wording is so clear that no interpretation is needed and FIFA somehow pretends to struggle to understand their own writing. I have seen loads of penalties called off for a player entering the box minimally early who had no impact on the penalty itself. What FIFA is basically saying is that players can just run on the field and take pictures as long as you stay a certain distance from the ball itself.

We are talking about times when the slightest and most insignificant contact in the box leads to a penalty, even when there was no goal scoring opportunity. Fifa's actual laws do state that the goal woul have to be disallowed. If they can't even interpret their own writing correctly they should just do what they did with handballs. They were incapable of following their own handball rule due to everyone constantly screaming hand, so they changed it. A penalty would be called off if a player enters the box too early. I don't see what is so much different here or where you would draw the line. Technically players could be 20 yards into the field and take pictures in massive numbers and still theoretically not interfere with play.

Yes the laws do state that. I’ve talked about it in many comments and obviously this video addresses it. Referees are able to use discretion and common sense to apply the laws. IFAB confirmed that it would only be applicable in cases that interfered with the game. If a sub falls over while warming up and his foot is on the field when a goal is scored, would you want or expect that goal to be disallowed?

@@PaulSpacey They can't claim something it doesn't state in their own laws. You can't just revise or misinterpret your own laws after an event to make it fit your narrative. If you call off penalties for a player entering a box minimally early who also did not interfere with play, then the same logic has to be applied here. The people who demand penalties for the most minimal and insignificant contact are now the ones who demand that a rule that has stood for decades now be ignored.

Show me an example of a goal that has been disallowed for an additional player being a few feet on the field? Or just a disallowed goal for an additional player on the field in any capacity? It’s one of those obscure parts of the law that is never enforced because common sense supersedes the application of it.

The handball was unnatural, so I think that's why that was not a penalty. "A player is considered to enlarge his body unnaturally, when the position of his hand/arm is not a consequence of the movement or when the position of the hand/arm cannot be justified by the movement.", according to the IFAB's rules. So yeah I think the VAR saw a full reaction action, given that the Croatia player had no clear intention of containing the opponent's attack in an irregular way.

Seems that Vinicius is in an offside position when ball is played over the top and when it hits Croatia player and drops to Vinicius, because it’s not a ‘deliberate play’ by the Croatian, Vinicius is then rightly called offside. The handball is borderline. Defender is risking being penalized by having his arm in that position but the referee and VAR must have determined it wasn’t handball based on the circumstances. The commentator said the offside negated the potential handball but that is not true; had the handball offense been clearer, that supersedes the offside then called when the ball drops to Vinicius.

@@PaulSpacey Hello! Sorry for time travelling here, but I really would like to know what defines a 'deliberate play', considering what you said about the handball in Croatia v Brazil. I searched the meaning of it many times and still can't understand. Anyway, I also think that the ball first hit the defender's shoulder then his hand.
