BMX racing, how hard could it be?.. Surely it's not that different to mountain biking. However, it's been a while since Blake has raced on wheels this small, so before the big event he heads to the pump track to get some practice in. Blake Samson gets some much-needed coaching from former British BMX champion John Twitchen. But you'll have to wait until next week to see if any of his training pays off!

I went the other way, I'm on the wrong side of 50 now but raced BMX on a Local/West Midlands level waaaaaay back in the early/mid 80s, I was OK, I spent more time off the podium than on it, I rode a Mongoose Super Goose and my last bike in the mid 80s was a Diamond Back Harry Leary, and I've got to admit the BMX's today look strange to my wrinkly eyes. I jumped on my first MTB in 1990-ish, I had a Carrera Quatro Comp, then a GT Avalanche in 93..Then the 90s took over and I spent more time in hedges in Ibiza than on a bike, skip forward 20+ years and I went and bought my first (Mid life crisis) MTB; an 2022 Intense Primer, couldn't ride it at first, had to learn a whole new way of riding, with suspension and 29" wheels. I thought because I could ride BMX over jumps etc it would be the same, yeah not gonna happen, I suffered bumps, bruises and good crashes, but eventually got the hang of it...I still crash, a lot...But It did amaze me how much had changed over the years, from bikes to techniques.

Right? I haven’t raced since ‘84 (I was decent at 12) and I learned so much from this vid. What an evolution! Paved tracks?! And long frames?! I quit because I got too tall for 20” and the cruisers (24”) were all ridden by older kids than me. I’d loved to have had an xxl frame! Maybe it’s just me but those pumps make this look slow.

Great show, Blake, and at age 64, I may give the older-guys BMX events a go, just for kicks. It'd be fun to line up against the BMX stars of earlier eras and fight to the finish, or at least get to the finish upright, lol. And back in the day, late '70s and early '80s, I used to haul my BMX bike in the bed of my mini-truck and whenever I'd happen to see a BMX track in a park or community, I'd stop and ride a few laps, simply to experience it. And O my, that was when BMX tracks were all over California and it was great that bike riders were accommodated like Little League baseball players and their ball fields had been everywhere for decades.

More BMX content please! Specifically, 24 inch wheel bmx cruisers. I would like to see Blake ride some singletrack on a 24" wheel cruiser. They are fairly capable and with a rider like Blake it would be cool just how far he could push the boundaries on your flow trails or even some tech. For instance, I have passed someone on a mtb on the inside of a switchback. You need to put a front brake on it for that. Also let's see him or Neil race some bmx pro's on a proper track just to see the difference.

No tarmac, all packed lime stone, and very sticky in the wet. 45 would've probably been optimal for me back then, 44 I was spinning too fast. BMX is much harder than it looks. What people need to realize is that riding through a track is pretty easy, but going through it as fast as you possibly can makes it exponentially more difficult. You timing has to be absolutely perfect or you basically lose control and can easily crash, usually by getting bucked off the bike. For berms, you need to lean the bike 90 degrees or close to it. If you make mistakes BMX bikes are not forgiving at all. So yeah, if you try racing make sure to ease into it and build you way up to you don't injure yourself. Thankfully they have different skill classes so you can start in the beginner class and work your way up.
