We discuss the American Harvest pellet stove we use to partially heat our Pole Barn. Is it enough? Is it the best option? Is it efficient or economical? What have we done to prep the barn for the cold winters?

Put an outside air intake on the inlet if you can, that way your not throwing your heated air out the chimney
@muchgooderish

I didnt plumb the intake to the outside of the barn. Would that actually make a difference with as open as the area is?

@@muchgooderish they make an incredible difference. The firebox exhaust fan runs at over 100 cfms. It may not sound like much but especially being your uninsulated your shop itself is pulling that volume of cold air thru your barn to offset the warm air being pulled into the firebox. I have a pellet stove in my house for supplemental heating, but always had the cold air intake on it, I feel it would leech efficiency without it

@@ripntearslayer9101 I always wondered if it mattered that much. Now you have sparked my interest. Time to research some more and maybe, just maybe, cut a hole in the side of the barn!! Sounds frightening. Ha

Mind you're also heating up 10,000 pounds of metal with all your tools and toys in that shop. Once that's up to temperature you can probably kick it back or notch or two

Nice video. Trying to heat any space with Wood or Pellets all depends on how insulated the structure is. If you have spray foam insulation, that would be very efficient in holding the heat in. Each Wood stove or Pellet Stove has either a BTU rating or the manufacturer will mention how many square feet it will heat. The difference between the two is the cost of the Wood or Pellets. Pellets are getting really expensive, up to $7 per bag and remember all pellets are not created equal. Premium pellets burn hotter and cleaner and cost more. Here in Texas firewood is up to 3-$400 a cord, so take this into consideration for your overhead. Another thing to remember is that Pellet stoves have motors, fans and moving parts (auger shaft) that can burnout which then is an extra cost compared to a wood stove that may need a new catalytic converter or Gaskets, Glass replacement etc. So to determine which kind of stove you want to heat with all has pro's and con's. Thanks for sharing this awesome video. PEACE

Thank you. For sure valid points. I have replaced several motors over the years. Updates to insulation are coming! Thanks for watchin and commenting!

Ceiling fans would push some of the heat back down to the floor. Measure the temperature at the roof. That's where all your heat is at.

I have 2 fans. Large household fans. They pull warm air up in the winter to circulate warm air around and back down to the floor.

I have a Pellet stove for my 40 x 60 pole barn. its rated for 2700 sq ft. I keeps it real toasty with no problems. My shop is insulated with R19 top to bottom.

Im jealous of the insulation. If I had to guess, I would rate my stove at 1500 sq ft coverage, if insulated of course. Thanks for watching and commenting.

What pellet stove do you have? And do you still love it? Would you do anything different? I have a 40 x 60 pole barn that I spent all summer insulating myself and I'm trying to find a good pellet stove to add.

Outside air kit. You are either drawing in cold outside air or from the main building that you've already heated with conventional means. The kits are relatively cheap and easy to install. I start mine by slushing a bunch of pellets with the juice then push them all up on one side of the firebox, hit start, light them, close the door, walk away. Your auger will usually drop more pellets on one side of the box than the other, you want to make your stack is on the leaner side.

My start up is similar. Rely on the fire gel for sure. I have read different opinions on the cold air intake, since it is such a large open area.

You can also burn corn from your local co-op just the same

To burn corn, it needs to be a multi fuel my pellet stove will only burn pellets. Corn would jam the feed auger.

I believe mine is a 6039 model, which should be multifuel. Not even sure where a co-op is around here, but worth looking into if it works and is cheaper..

I have a 40 x 60 pole barn that I spent all summer refinishing inside and out and I put in R21 in the walls all the way around. The roof is not insulated yet, I'll do that this summer. But I did put in a Mini Split that is sized for the space and the mini split cannot heat it above 40 degrees...running flat out 24/7. I'm sure that'll change once I get the ceiling insulated but just wanted to share. @@muchgooderish

@@austinw638 Thanks for sharing. I am seeing more and more where the mini-splits can't keep up. We are also insulating our ceiling. We are considering a larger pellet stove, as ours is only rated for up to 1200sq ft, and we have 1500. About $1200 for ne that is rated at 2000-3000 sq ft.

Its hot on there, no doubt, but it is also insulated on all sides and the hot air is blown out the front. The flame will only get so big.. They are not made to heat by heating the metal stove itself.. Thanks for watching and commenting..
