4 years ago my wife and I removed a tree from our backyard that was damaging a wall. Now after 4 years of rot and decay, I want to try and turn the stump into something beautiful and functional.

I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle kzfaq.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.

That’s gorgeous Jean. I would say root up looks better and seems to cradle the glass top in a more natural way. Also it will be much easier to attach a more chunky base (possibly even something like a sleeper wood plinth) than it will be to try and stabilise the glass top elegantly. Nice job mate. And I love that laser level.

Love it. I was dubious when you were lopping off big portions of root, but it looks awesome in the end. It's obviously roots up, and maybe just one chunk of steel sticking out of the base.

From a fellow Western Capie, you have a fantastic channel. Came across you a few weeks ago when I watched your pedestal drill restoration, and I simply had to start your series from the beginning. Keep it up. From me roots up, but I suppose with a little one that will start crawling and standing up against everything in a few months it really doesn't matter 😉

I think the roots up has a more dramatic look and you get to see all the details you carved into the piece as well as all the natural elements of the stump. It also creates a more airy feel due to the negative space created by the roots being up and allows more foot room when sitting close to the table.

I love how you turned that into something that looks so good, I favour the roots on top. To compensate for the smaller footprint you could hollow out the bottom and pour concrete into the hollow and let it set. And don't forget that new bundle of joy will be toddling about and having 4 kids that have successfully reached adulthood I've seen just how...... "interesting" it is to watch them lol.

I like the roots up direction. I think you can see more of the shape that way and I agree the large metal frame needed for the roots down direction would distract from the rest of the table. Maybe you can make the base with curvy pieces of metal to try and replicate the look of branches. That would help it blend in a bit and look less out of place.

I like the roots down. It makes it look like the tree is growing out of your floor. That being said, I think that if you wanted to continue with the theme of a tree growing out of the floor, it would be better to not do a glass top, but to do a nice wood top. That would allow you to support it without the supports being seen through glass.

I think the roots on top is a lot better. It gives a lot more character to the piece. It really hits the eyes. But I would recommend a larger glass though. That one is a bit too small for this piece and make sure to place glass holders to protect the glass and wood "as you already know of course" But it's a beautiful piece and my opinion, I'm a BIG RUSTIC NUT myself, I prefer it roots up!

I like roots up, I believe the base support will be much less noticeable and don't forget to put rubber bumpers at the top between the glass and wood. That way they take up any inconveniences in the level surface and also keep the glass from sliding if bumped
