What happened on the first attempt is the exhaust cooled off, cold air is hard to move compared to hot air, when the exhaust cooled off, there was essentially a traffic jam of air, which caused a drop in horsepower. You had a situation similar to if you had stuck a raw potato in the exhaust pipe. To make this work, insulate the exhaust, keep keep it hot, keep the air flowing.
