We need to remember our heroes were just playing a used instrument. It would be like us buying a 90’s or 2000’s model today. There is a status to owning a vintage guitar and there’s something really cool about it. Remember, 70’s Martins are now vintage. We all know what they sound like. I’ve played a lot of vintage guitars and my favorite guitar I’ve ever played is still a brand new Atkin.

Interesting observation about building your hand to your '40 D-28. I bought a 1983 D-28 and it had some issues (neck reset, refret, non-original tuners, etc.). I had it for a week before surrendering it to the repair shop for 2 months. When I finally got it back, it wasn't "my" guitar yet. We had arguments. My fingers weren't ready for the action on a standard Martin. After a year of playing, it is now mine - we reached an agreement, but it was a process. It took that long to develop my ear to its unique sound.

It is true that a vintage instrument sounds vastly richer and more resonant. I actually get high from the sound made by my 1917 Martin 1350 koa (same as a D-18 which came out the next year, except made of Hawaiian koa wood instead of mahogany). Martin made only 17 of them in that first year of production and only 188 of them ever, including prototypes. Mine was previously owned by the late Jim Milne, the original bass player for Downchiild. The guitar came with a letter of correspondence about this guitar to Jim Milne of Downchild from the late Martin archivist/historian Mike Longworth, signed by the latter. This parlor guitar is in perfect playing condition. It is a joy to play and a pure pleasure to hear. Astounding for its size! I also own a 2003 Martin D-41, a 2005 Martin Limited Edition Figured Koa Special (Martin's 2005 NAMM Show show guitar), #25 of 25, signed by Chris Martin IV, and a 1921 Martin Style A mandolin. You owe yourself a vintage Martin before you die. A vintage Gibson is also a real find.

I was in the shop a couple weeks ago and saw that guitar hanging there and as I was looking for and admiring it Corey I believe said, “Guitars are for playing not looking” and handed it to me. Everytime I’ve come in your shop when we are traveling through your employees are always so kind. That would have been a dream guitar for me to own, but so glad I had the opportunity to strum a few chords! Thanks again!

Thanks for the discussion. I don’t have a true vintage D28, but I have a 1974 D28 and it’s changed the game for me. I don’t forsee ever getting rid of it.

Some corrections and dates: rear shifted bracing began in mid 1938, 1-11/16' nut width began in early 1939, last year for the scalloped bracing was 1944,top Herringbone ended in late 1946, Adirondack tops ended in 1944, The first HD28 was made in 1976 and adjustable truss rods first began in early 1985.Brazillian Rosewood ended and Indian Rosewood began in late 1969. Bone nuts and saddles on contemporary Martin's began in 2004.

My 1962 D28 changed my life. I inherited the guitar from my uncle, the original owner. It’s the best sounding acoustic I’ve ever heard. I’ve been offered 10K for it and will not sell it. I have the original case and paper work from Martin. My uncle even had it authenticated many years ago when someone challenged him on its authenticity. It had resonance for miles and miles. Strum once and behold. Amazing.

I've always been a Taylor guitar Guy, but I can't argue the significance of Martin's instruments. I'd love to play one, just to say that I have, I've also looked at getting a new Martin d28 or d18, but they are just not the same as those vintage Martin instruments. For now, I'm really interested in Collings guitars.

I have a Vintage Alvarez Yairi DY85A that is magical, it doesn't have to be a Martin to change your life, you just have to be patient enough to play as many as you can, but once you find that Magical instrument, don't sell or Trade. More than welcome to play mine against your Vintage Martin if around Gainesville Fla, but I have major cancer surgery on 16th in a handful of days and a long recovery. Yairi Guitars were all handmade in Japan from finest of aged vintage tone woods and best craftsmanship, probably THE BEST VALUE IN acoustics are some of the Alvarez Yairi's

I found a 50s d28 at a yardsale last yr. The lady said her husband played it in a bluegrass band. He had bought it new. And she wanted 1300 for it.I went to get money from the ATM. On the way back, I took a wrong road. I was Confused as to where the yard sale had been. Finally i found it. Then i woke up.😅😅

Guys, what a video :), I'm from Brazil and I know these Jacarandá (Brazilian Rosewood) well. Even with little knowledge of the English language, I noticed that the current owner changed the bridge and also the frets. Did he also have the trussrod installed?

It’s the only guitar out of everything that I have that is missing from what I really want. The prices have went so insane over the last year or so that I will never own one, but I’ve been fortunate to play several herringbone’s. I’m not confused in that owning one is not going to make me a better player putting in the hours is where that comes in but it would be awesome to have one.

That D-28 sounds exceptionally good. I have played newer Martins and a Collings D-2AT that I would have purchased before I left the store if I could afford it. Even an aged Sitka top usually has quite a nice sound. Personal preference? Red Spruce top with scalloped, forward-shifted bracing, on a dreadnought or Jumbo with Madagascan Rosewood. Alas, I am pleased with the instruments I have and I enjoy playing them, too.

Hang on - Bob Dylan...?? 🤔🤔 I know he borrowed Martins at times in his early days, and used Martins a lot post-motorcycle accident seclusion... But his major fame came about playing Gibsons...jumbos, and especially his Nick Lucas model...

Every vintage one I’ve ever touched played worse and sounded worse or no better than my 2010 HD-28. There’s no truss rod so every neck adjustment needs a reset. I played one prewar that sounded good but was in desperate need of a reset. Not a fan of the neck profiles either.

Nada and actually, most you mention and a hundred others played new or fresh D-28's and other new Martin models in their early careers, rarely used or vintage... Paul McCartney, Bob D, Hank , Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Joni, Donovan, Page, Lennon, Harrison, Clapton, Cash, Elvis, Prine, Yokum, Morrison, Simon, Allman, Watson, etc...they just used them and they became used, the list goes on and on. Because they were the best guitars being made at the time and you had to have on in the 60's and 70's. THE most copied guitar in all of history! As time went on everyone wanted a played in one...Except for Rice who bought it from Mr. Miller. Roland and Clarence bought the 35 in 1959 for $25.00... So now you're selling Martin's...! Time for you to promote them on YT Ha!

This is just paying for rarity in my opinion. In the same way that brazillian rosewood vs indian rosewood is just rarity. There's a lot more modern guitars that are much cheaper and sound much better.

not worth it. way more expenses and repairs. I think D28 I think peeled binding, warp necks and high action, cracks, no truss, refretts, and neck sets
