Welcome back, on this video we pull Sheris Transmission from her Can Am Maverick X3, split the case and replace the worn final drive gear. I found out after doing some research that this is a common problem with the X3 platform once you get to around 4-6000 miles. so pull and clean your axles shafts regularly so this doesn't happen to you, but if it does I hope this video helps you.

In the owners manual it’s says at about so many miles to remove the axles and grease those splines area to make it last longer. Wether that gets you mite life out of it or not I don’t know. I have about 2500 miles on mine and I’m thinking I’m going to pull my axles and do this shortly to see if it will last several more miles. Everyone says around 4000-5000 miles this happens. Retail prices are 350.00 for the gear, 250.00 per axle. If you do it yourself labor is free. If you have a shop probably 1000-1500 in labor.

@304trails8 11 ай бұрын
like the @thecanamcrew said its 350 for the gear sometimes cheaper on partzilla depends on the time but if a shop does it again it would be 1000-1500 dollar job bit mine cost me 700 bc the shop was already doing a long block motor swap for me so they knocked some off the price. @@Ulises.ba7

id recommend you pull your axles out every 500-1000 miles and put a little grease on the splines bit it just depends on the riding you do. if your machine is in muddy water or straight mud a lot it just an= "maintenance" you will have to deal with every 3k miles or so unfortunately. @@Ulises.ba7

Im getting a loud clunking sound at times on the trail. Thought it was my sway bar links but then I found that my drivers side axle has play up and down where it mates with the rear diff/trans. Would this be the same issue?
@TheCanAmCrew
@TheCanAmCrew Жыл бұрын
The play will eventually turn into a stripped gear. New axles every few thousand miles or maintaining the ones you have are key. Remove snd grease then re apply is supposed to be done regularly. Striped final drives typically happen between 4-6000 miles if you don’t maintain them. I got 8500 out of mine

@mikeorr8994
@mikeorr8994 Жыл бұрын
I just had the samething happen to my 2017 X3. Absolutely ZERO indication the splines were going to strip out. I found however, regular maintenance of the rear axles must occur every 500 to 1000 miles. That would include removing both rear axles, clean the splines on the axles and final drive gear, grease and replace. If you don't do this, failure will occur around 2500 miles. I've read a ton on maintenance on these things and never heard or watched anything on this type of failure. If your final drive gear inside the gearbox is good, it's a relatively inexpensive fix depending on what type of axles you buy. I bought 2 axles from east lake axles, and final drive gear from partzilla. $500 repair. Did the work myself..... of course with the help of Jesse and Sherri in this video. Thank you guys for posting this video. Saved me a ton of time and head scratching.

I don't need no stinking manual!!! hahahaha I do like that the Can Am trans case does split down the middle (exposing ALL bearings) unlike the RZR 1000 trans which is an off center split. Like others have suggested, replacing those chinese bearings (I presume) with the Japanese version would have been a good move. I wonder why the teeth on that final gear slipped?? If this really is a common issue, I would consider treating that final gear with something like CryoHeat or similar hardening process. I'd rather spin the axle than have to go through that again.... Good job!! I bet that is nearly a $2k job to have a dealer make those repairs....it pays to be a ble to wrench on your own stuff.
@TheCanAmCrew
@TheCanAmCrew 2 жыл бұрын
This is a fairly common problem. What happens is the Oring on the axles fail letting water and mud inside the trans gear. The axles being a lesser metal than the gear starts to wear and eventually wears to a point where a good hit will spin the axle inside the gear rounding both teeth on the axle and gear itself. Some routine maintenance of pulling the axles and adding grease every once In awhile will prevent this. Mine has 7500 miles now and has yet to fail.

That sounds right. Jack the back end up and see if the tire spins while in park. If either tire or both tires do then it’s stripped. Your four wheel drive should still work since it has nothing to do with your final drive gear.

You can do it yourself for about 800.00 in parts. Pull the rear axles out once a year or every 1-2,000 miles and grease the splines and re install.

If it won’t shift into high then most likely you have a bent shift fork. It’s to real common but I’ve heard of it happening a few times.

It had just turned 4000 miles when this happened, we ride them fairly hard but not to the point of not being able to dive it back out of the woods hahaha. We’re at 165hp to the crank. 150 to the wheels. We ride West Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan. Mud, climbs, rocks. Etc.

Heck ya that’s awesome. I have 6000 miles on mine and have only replaced the front a arm bushings last weekend and secondary rollers at the same time. It’s all about the maintenance. Pull the axles every once in a while and grease them and you won’t have any issues.

It was a pain to get out, we had to hook a ratchet strap around the cv joint and ratchet to the side of my garage then tap on the cv with a hammer. It’ll pop out if you get enough tension on it. They can be a pain in the ass to get out if they’ve been in there for awhile.

If the same thing happened to yours there is a change warranty will cover it however if your running tires other than stock they might reject it depending on how well you know your dealer. I paid out of pocket so we didn’t have to wait and go through the warranty process. My dealer told me it would be over a month process.
