Can-Am Spyder RT - A $505 Oil Change

On March 8th, 2024, I had the 1st Service performed on my new Can-Am Spyder RT, and it cost $505
At first I believed that inflation continues to drive the scheduled service costs up, but that was NOT the case for this service. The cause was due to common billing practices by motorcycle and automotive service shops. These billing practices usually benefit ONLY the dealer, and NOT the customer.

@@SpyderWayne It didn't sound like they were that bothered Wayne? A good dealership would have shown concern and compromised with you. They will do the same, to the next customer, until they are called out. You need to be more dominant in the dealings. You were robbed - and since you signed for it - you let them rob you. I just replaced the standard sway bar on my 2020 RT Ltd with an after market sway bar. I did the job myself after being told by the Can Am dealer the job would take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to complete at $155 per hour. I’m located in the state of Victoria in Australia. I did the job myself in 2 hours with some help from a mate and I’m no mechanic. Just a retired Plumber who hates being gouged by dealers. Keep the videos coming, and as we say here “good onya mate”👍😊

But most of all it’s the satisfaction you get from working on your own machine and being able to take the time and care that sadly dealers are often don’t / can’t because they’re rushing to get the job done in order to move onto the next one.

Yery good video. I have been a service manager for a car dealership. Shop supplie fees is just another add-on to get the customer to pay for items that in the past were just the cost of doing business. What's next, a portion of the power, water, and property taxes? Most businesses really don't care about customer service or if you come back. And, I am pleased to see that you were not rude, just letting them know why you will not be coming in back. Safe travels.

As long as the guy or gal at the service counter is being courteous and respectful, they are doing their job. They are usually not the person who establishes the pricing and billing practices of the shop, and even if they are the owner, the biliing practices I talk about in this video are not illegal, but rather a fairly common practise for vehicle service shops. I received good service, but in this case, this dealer appears to be more interested in taking advantage of the biliing practice rather than in customer retention or repeat business. So, off I will go to find a different dealer for service. Thank you so much for your comment 👊😁👍

It is frustrating isn’t it. I had a headlight go out on my 18rtl. The dealer wanted $400 labor plus bulbs to repair. I asked since you have to take the bike apart to change the bulbs can you give me a break on the oil change. They declined. So I would have been looking at around $800 for the job. I decided to try and do it myself. Watched KZfaq’s ordered the oil kit and new led bulbs and tools for about $300. Learned a lot and saved $500. Will not be back to the dealer who sold me the bike. I have noticed a similar jump in costs at the dealer over the past couple of years, we are paying about the same here. Up here in 🇨🇦 we do not have as many choices to shop around for certified Can Am shops. It is a bit of an oligopoly for want of a better term. Friends of mine have told me that the motorsports business in general tends to be a bit shady at best. I am sure this is why many people just do it themselves..... i used to.

I am really curious about the inspection listed. Please provide a breakdown of that and what it entails so that the "value" can be assessed. I feel most of the things they do are listed in the service manual, available online . I bought my Spyder late last year, and this will be its first season. The only miles it has are from riding it home from the dealer, so it's literally 20 miles. If the inspection is literally check visually check this or that with no spe ial tools then there is no value to them IMO as I can do that myself. I can change the oil myself. Where they might get you is with warranty. If something happens to a system or the engine and it was not properly I specter, then warranty could be denied. This is why I video all maintenance and service on my motorcycles when in the warranty period. The dealer used in this video was at least honest, did the work (hopefully) and gave you back your bike when done. A more shady dealer would cover thier tracks by holding the bike for the whole 2.5 hours claimed. (This is why I'd ask about the inspection items done.) Thank you for sharing your experience. My only criticism is that you didn't not share the name of this dealer, potentially helping anyone else who is considering this shop.
@SpyderWayne
@SpyderWayne 4 ай бұрын
As stated in the video, I will NOT share the name of this dealer. Sorry for your disappointment. If you want to bash a business publicly, online, on social media, that's your choice. As for the first service, yes, the grocery list of items is shown in the ownet's manual. In my manual, these items are listed on page 111. This video is not about the specific individual items inspected for the first maintenance service. I did state, at the beginning of the video, that in addition to the oil change, this was for the first service on my Spyder. The point of this video is the 2.5 hours of labor time charged, or $300 of labor, Vs the actual 1.25 hours of time the dealer had my Spyder in their shop. in other words, this dealer bills a "book" rate or "standatd" rate and not "actual" time. That billing practice is not a big surprise, but the spread between their standard time was double the actual time, and that difference doesn't sit well with me. The recourse I've chosen, is simply to never return to this dealer.I have had, and I show 3 prior services done on my previous Spyder, for comparative purposes.

My experience is very similar to yours. The first service was at the dealer 90 miles from home (platinum rated for can-am service). It was an insane $397.44, the second oil change was at a local tractor supply store (gold rated for can-am) For an oil change, rear tire and pannier latch replacements.The total cost of the 2nd oil change (which included the recall on the trunk latched and a new rear tire was $618. The bad part about going there was they do not "do tires", they outsourced the rear tire work. That took 28 days of waiting and calling (each day was perfect and sunny and I was told to call in a few days until finally had had enough and told them I was going to get it period). The third and last service was back at the dealer where I purchased it (90 miles away) and they gouged me. I got 3 new tires (even though the fronts could have gone much longer. I also let them do the brake pedal/rear light recall). They "do tires" but I had to pre order them a month in advance and then I have to pay $50 for them to "get them" from another dealer. Total cost $1,700.00 Shop supplies were $28, oil kit was $143.99 like yours.Also itemized on the bill: tire labor $435, air filter $44, etc. Just loaded with bloated fees to the point I will never let anyone else change the oil again. I will let them do ties and recalls, but I have had it with padding the bill with crap fees.

Great video Wayne. I guess it depends on what you consider value for all that money spent. Since I bought the Sea-to-Sky model, I decided to get my service done at my dealership knowing it was going to be more expensive (just like it is for cars instead of going to a local smaller garage). Like you said, dealerships are in it to make enough money to pay their staff and keep their business running; I have no problem with that. But, overcharging the actual time it took or adding charges without prior explanations are reasons enough to not return there, I agree. BRP has to improve the quality of their dealership network, in all aspects, if they wish to retain its customers. I am lucky to have an excellent CanAm dealership (I had a great flat tire story too long for here as well as a defective battery story too). Not only will I continue my service there, I also put my Spyder there for winter storage (I don't have a garage at home). Is it expensive? Yes, it is, but I get great service and attention, which is what I value the most to keep enjoying my Spyder for many more years. Cheers Wayne!

There's quite a few service inspection/adjustment items included in the scheduled maintenance that I'm either not able to perform or not qualifued to verify certain items are within spec. The oil change kit & labor cost is usually at least 1/2 the cost of a service. If your plan is strictly for the scheduled maintenance and nothing else, I would say you overpaid. But it almost sounds like you may be getting extended warranty, perhaps tire and battery coverage too. $2300 does seem pretty steep though.

Over time (and I was never a bike mechanic), I have learned to do all of the maintenance on my 3 bikes myself- dealers charge too much and if it’s in your capabilities (and you have the tools) you can save a small fortune. If they are charging by the hour, even a partial hour (even 10 minutes) will be charged as 0.5 hrs I would assume. Always better to buy your own parts and do it yourself (if you’re able). Same with the cars.

I agree with you fully, and any DIY work is certainly easier on the wallet. I can and will be doing most of the work (that I can do) after the factory warranty on my Spyder expires in Aug 2025. Your comment is completely valid, thank you 😁👍. This video was not intended to be about my choice to get required maintenance services done at a dealer, which I choose to do. I choose not to jeopardize the warranty on the Spyder, which means I choose to eat the scheduled maintenance costs. This video was intended to show a billing practice that, in my opinion, went too far. But it's amazing how many other folks commenting seem to think this is only about a simple oil change. There are services required during the warranty period that I can not do, and some that I can do, including the oil change. Everyone can choose what they want to do on their own. Others think buying cheap oil at Walmart is the solution, and I'm laughing my ass off at those idiots, but then again, they absolutely have the right to put whatever kind of oil they choose in their bikes, that's their choice, so I'm trying to keep it down to a dull giggle 😆🤣🤣

I change my oil myself. It is not that difficult. I realize that many have no skills to do this, but a non-can am shop shouldn't be penalized as not being able to live up to can am standards. Also, can am made it easier to change oil in the later models so it should cost less and take less time to perform.
@SpyderWayne
@SpyderWayne 4 ай бұрын
I don't think of it as a non Can-Am shop is being penalized, but will a non Can-Am shop have a technician that knows how to do service on a Spyder? Will they know how to remove and reinstall any of the body panels? Will they have access to the Spyder's specs to know how to inspect and adust items, like the belt tension, or belt centering or anything else that needs to be adjusted or lubricated? The oil change by itself can be done by Spyder owners, Can-Am On Road has videos for the Do-It-Yourself owners. It's some of these other service items that BRP requires during the 2-year warranty period that I would have difficulty with, I'm a retired bean counter (accountant) and my wrenching experience is somewhat limited, I'm just not as good as I wish I could be.

The oil change is the primary reason for the 1st service, and I can do that. The 'grocery' list of items to inspect, with possible adjustments, kind of makes it a gold mine for dealers to get a couple of billable hours of labor. @ernestdesotell2335 I don't believe that Can-Am will provide service manuals to Spyder owners, as far as i know, only to authorized dealers. You could try and ask your dealer. To get recommendations for dealers in your region, best thing to do is try to find a US Spyder Ryders group in your region, most regions have them, possibly on Facebook, that way you can get recommendations from other Spyder owners. The Sypder certainly is a dream machine, even though some dealers are not so good to deal with. 👊😁👍

I am doing my own servicing and maintenance. I don't like being told what oil and filters (both air and oil) I have to use and I don't like book times for a job. It would have been nice if I could have told my boss that it only me an hour to do a job but I was charging him two hours because it took Joe in the next office that long to do the same job. $159 an hour labor costs? I know everyone does that but the mechanic probably doesn't get as much as $59 for that hour and a $100 to pay the costs of the rest of the shop? I wonder. Many dealerships only survive because of the outrageous charges on parts and service. That is not to say they don't make a lot of money off sales, its just that they don't make enough sales. Why? Because the mark up is unreasonable. You can make a lot of money per unit for a few sales or a little money per unit for a lot of sales. Admittedly the first is easier and so that is the way the entire industry has gone. I used to own a Volvo. Everything was expensive but there was this diminutive eccentric Swede who ran a shop in the town I then lived in, that serviced and sold parts for Volvo's only. He did not sell the cars. I could have my car serviced for about 60% of what the dealer charged and parts cost about 75%. The quality was above and beyond what the provided and the customers lined up outside the door. Was he rich like the dealership owners? Certainly not but he was happy, beloved and respected.

I am trying to determine if I should stick with the XPS synthetic blend kit at $143 or build my own kit which costs less (approx $85) for Rotella full synthetic T6 5W40 and the oil filter kit from BajaRon. Isn't full synthetic better than synthetic blend?

There have been comments from folks who use full synthetic oil. As long as it's rated for motorcycles, for both engine & transmission lubrication, it's probably ok to use, but I'm not a BRP Can-am engineer. If you check out any of the Spyder forums, you'll find discussions on it. Some folks go with XPS as recommended by Can-Am, and and others want to save a few bucks. It's a personal choice. I've stuck wirh XPS for the 4 years I've owned a Syder.

My advice is to watch KZfaq videos and do the job yourself, and save lots of money 💰 on labor. Welcome to America.

I can do the oil change, no problem. It's a bunch of the other stuff that BRP wants done that is a challenge.

Sorry but I would bash any dealer that rips off their customers with those fricken high prices. Hate is not a word I use loosely, but I hate it when dealers and BRP rip us off. Take your car or pick-up to a quicky lube, Walmart or a reputable dealer for an oil & filter change using full synthetic oil and a quality filter. If you pay $100 it's very rare, it's usually around $75 . Now that's high compare to $39.99 before the dam pandemic. We are victims of American GREED. Everywhere we turn today, greedy bastoids are getting to our pockets taking more of our hard earned money. Corporate greed has taken over America today. I've had a couple of Spyder RT LTs, I love these machines, but the dealers and BRP make me sick with their fricken high prices for service and parts. They advertise to the average person then rake us over the coals sucking our life's blood out of us, so they can live high on the hog. It's not rocket science doing the service on our Spyders, but they warn us against not having a dealer do the service, fearing we void our questionable warranties at best. Thank you for bring this travesty out into the open. Be fore warned, owning a Spyder is going to be expensive ....... Oh yea, $143.99 for a $55 oil change kit, no mater where you go, is PRICE FIXING and it's against the law. BRP punishes dealers who don't follow their strict pricing. That's pure BS.

This is my 2nd Soyder, and I'll likely own one until I can no longer ride, and yes, parts and maintenance are not cheap... on pretty much most bikes. 👍

make a formal complaint with the state. They over charged you.

That would probably be a waste of time. The dealer did provide an estimate of $505, and I authorized them to go ahead and do the service, and I was billed the $505 that they quoted. If you want to fight that charge after the work is done, that is between you and the dealer. The state will see that the dealer provided a quote, received authorization to go ahead, and billed exactly what they quoted. Maybe in your state, the state might try and do something for you, but I believe it would be a complete waste of time in my state. My recourse is to find another dealer.

Folks, changing your own oil has become a lost art. Why I do not know. Its the simplest thing you can do after airing up your tires. Your watching this video, why not search up someone who changed oil on this vehicle? Probably do the same oil change for less than $50 dollars.

I DO think that you are wrong and far too forgiving! Dealers that clearly rip off their customers DO need bashing! It's the only way that customers can begin to get a fair deal. Yes - they do need to make a living but so does the customer. You have willingly given them money, that you were deceived into paying - and the dishonest dealer has accepted the money under false pretences - for work that they did not do. Nothing, at all reasonable about what you were charged - that 75 minute (Two and a half hours??) service would have been fair at half the price and the dealers would still be in profit and able to pay their workers. What you experienced was unreasonable and exploitative - greed and exploitation like this needs advertising - NAME AND SHAME - they will soon realise that the number of mugs left to con have rapidly dwindled and will be forced to be HONEST!
