Climbing Kilimanjaro is a strenuous activity that takes place over a number of days. The main routes range from 5-9 days and an elevation gain of about 13,000 feet. The summit itself is 19,341 feet high, making it an extremely tall mountain. The amount of oxygen at the top is around 40% less than the oxygen at sea level.
Given these facts, we always advise anyone who attempts to climb Kilimanjaro to be in the best shape possible.
But, we also know that when it comes to training, some people set a goal and go full force and others hardly train at all. So it begs the question, can someone who is unfit succeed in reaching the top of Kilimanjaro?
How fit do you have to be to climb Kilimanjaro? Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to this question. It’s impossible for us to say, “If you can do this, then you can climb Kilimanjaro.”
Everyone is different. Some people seem to excel whereas others struggle, with or without training. Our best advice is for you to put an honest effort into training and show up in the best shape possible. This way, you’ll know you’ve done everything you could to prepare and the rest is up to fate.
A nonchalant attitude about climbing Kilimanjaro can get you into trouble, or worse. So please don’t show up untrained and unconcerned. The mountain claims lives every year. It’s careless, irresponsible and disrespectful to take it lightly.
It's generally said that anyone with a reasonable degree of fitness can climb Kilimanjaro. And for the most part that's true, provided that they can acclimatize well.
We recommend training for at least 2 months prior to coming to Tanzania. If you're already in hiking shape, great. But if you know you’re lacking fitness, start training earlier. Climbing Kilimanjaro certainly has its risks. But by being fit, you give yourself the best chance of climbing safely and successfully.

Being a bit on the heavier side, my advice is to diet diet diet. Taking extra kg's onto the mountain will feel like you are carrying an extra back pack. On the subject of back pack, carry essentials only. I found from my EBC trip that the back pack becomes disproportionately heavier as every day goes on and that DSLR camera becomes a heavy luxury. Lastly, for those unable to train on hills or mountains, find a building and climb the stairs. eg Shira to Baranco 785m elevation, your building 100m, climb 7 times in 5 hrs. This may sound harsh and a big investment in time but as good a simulation of incline climb as you can get in a city.

i claimbed it at age 64, but im in ok shape. it was hard but going down was really tough on my knees.

An unfit person would most likely have a very tough time walking up Kilimanjaro. Three of us were up and down the mountain in two days in 1965 using the north route. Cannot do that now! And for us it was free ... can't beat that, can you? The rule of thumb was that if you had been in Nairobi for 6 months, you would be fit enough to complete the walk. Peter met that condition, played soccer in Nairobi, but suffered much on our walk.

With luck, any person, fit or unfit, handicapped or not, can climb Kilimanjaro. It's nicknamed "Everyman's Everest". But what would be impressive, if the "unfit" person can climb it 3 times. Then you can truly claim that the "unfit" person can climb Kilimanjaro. With the same token, someone will make another eyeball video with the title: "Can an unfit person climb Mt. Everest" - the answer is yes, since the term "unfit" is subjective. No need to see any video.
