An increasing number of companies worldwide are rapidly digging into the realm of humanoid robots, driven by the aim of achieving "embodied intelligence" and creating universal robots. Jensen Huang, in a remarkable speech, forecasted that embodied intelligence will herald the forthcoming revolution in AI. This notion, also dubbed “embodied AI,” encompasses intelligent systems with the ability to perceive, reason, and engage with the physical environment in a manner similar to humans. Embodied intelligence transcends mere physical tasks; it signifies the amalgamation of world sensing, modelling, and action. Progress in this domain implies that robots are on the path to becoming more intelligent and human-like, expanding their potential use-cases across diverse sectors. Numerous companies are engaged in the creation of humanoid embodied AI robots. These include Hanson Robotics, renowned for introducing the famous Sophia, Boston Dynamics with Atlas, Figure, Sanctuary AI, Mentee Robotics, Agility Robotics, Tesla with its second-generation Optimus, Apptronik, Unitree with the newly unveiled G1, and Pal Robotics, among others. These corporations are leading the charge in the development of humanoid robots capable of human interaction across various domains, ranging from research and entertainment to healthcare and the substitution of monotonous tasks.
Kepler Exploration Robot, a Chinese start-up, has recently introduced its latest creation, the Kepler Forerunner series, also known as the Kepler Humanoid Robot. The launch of the Kepler Humanoid Robot highlights the company’s significant investment in cutting-edge technology, amassing a collection of core innovations that are influencing the industry. This sophisticated humanoid stands at one hundred and seventy-eight centimetres tall, weighs eighty-five kilograms, and features an intelligent hand with 12 degrees of freedom. Central to its innovation are the proprietary planetary roller screw actuator and rotary actuator, which are crucial for the dynamic movement of the Forerunner humanoid robot’s limbs. The planetary roller screw actuator, used to control the robot’s limbs, provides a remarkable thrust of eight thousand Newtons. It outperforms traditional motors in terms of precision control, increased power, and rapid responsiveness, skilfully managing complex tasks. Moreover, the rotary actuator, used in the waist and joints, achieves a maximum torque of two hundred Newton metres and a repeat positioning accuracy of one hundredth of a degree. This provides strong support for the movement of the torso, ensuring efficient and stable operation. The entire body has up to 40 degrees of freedom, enabling capabilities such as navigating intricate terrains, intelligent obstacle avoidance, flexible hand manipulation, powerful lifting and carrying of heavy loads, hand-eye coordination, and intelligent interactive communication.
