I would recommend vinegar. Soak it for five days. I threw a handful of rusty bolts in a bucket once. After five days it looked like 20 people defecated in the bucket. You would have no doubts whether it was working or not. I pulled out the bolts and black ooze was left. I hosed them off with water and they looked great.

Awesome, I never really thought soda would be able to remove the rust like that, I just use a wire brush after cleaning some of my old rusty weights with soap and water I use a wire brush to try to scratch off as much rest as possible and then I would wash them again with soap and water and a little plastic brush then let them dry then put them on a rebarb that I have up between a couple tree branches with each weight about a foot apart and I just spray painted them with black Rust-Oleum paint and primer combo that way I can paint both sides at the same time as well as the edges and when I painted them before on the ground on a cardboard or ply board it didn't work as good because you can only do one side at a time but my weights would also stick to the ground and the edges wouldn't look right because my weights were sticking on the ground basically so I put them on a rebarb when I spray painted them but I never thought about using soda or vinegar to soak my weights first and remove a lot of the rust but it definitely looks like it works amazing and I definitely want to try it next time because I still have some rusted weights that I bought used fairly recently that I haven't tried to restore yet.

Coca Cola and Pepsi are not the best cleaning solution, its expected for Sprite to be better. If you are on the budget, carbonated water would do well for its cheaper price. Im also interested in Cockta (made in Ex-YU) cleaning, even it does not have most of the acids that Coca Cola company use, its way more carbonated, more aggressive and uses more natural acids, as well as more sugar, but aside from sweetness, overall makes it more dangerous then Coca Cola, but also more expensive. For usual cleaning of my ultrasonic cleaning membrane (used to clean various things and over time, a vibrating membrane that actually cleans become nasty and less efficient), i use cheap carbonated water with lemon (its probably not a real lemon juice), soaked in, turn membrane and UV light for several seconds from time to time during the day, leave it over night, and ultrasonic membrane become clean as a new one.

@strangetwang40874 жыл бұрын
In case anyone is wondering. It’s the phosphoric acid that is used in coke products that does it. You can just go to the hardware store and buy a product that is designed to resolve rust and it will cost not much more than the soda and work 5x faster. Kinda makes this video a waste of time in my book.

You just tossed the scientific method right out the window. You should have had a control. In my opinion had you not soaked one of the weights in anything and used a wire brush and a towel you would have gotten the same result.
@KentsGarageGym5 жыл бұрын
I've done just the wire brush before. It didn't get it quite as clean and took a lot more scrubbing. With soaking, a lot of the rust wipes right off.
@mindyketchum3075 жыл бұрын
You're exactly correct Keith. Using the wire brush sent this "experiment" right out the window. A wire brush is used for rust removal all in itself. A rag and light rinse would have shown true results. Oh and it does have to be regular Coke.
