This week marks five months since Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, plunging the island into the worst blackout in American history. Chris recently went to the U.S. territory to meet a man who has made it his mission to bring power back to his people via DIY solar tech -- all with the help of a KZfaq creator.

They need to part-out that solar farm and make as many micro-grids as possible to start with. Forget the old paradigm of centralized anything, especially in PR; there's no need since renewable energy is abundant and the government inept. Make the micro-grids modular and expandable. Keep adding generating and storage capacity and eventually they'll have the most advanced virtual power grid in the world. That being said, how shameful is it that the USA spends over $2B a day on just their military, while the people of PR suffer. I can't imagine any other G8 nation allowing this to happen. Just think what the money spend on a *single* B2 could pay for!? (look up the price if you want a shock).
@JavierCamacho
@JavierCamacho 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for caring and those emotional words. Regarding the panels, they are privately owned. They invested over 60million with the hopes to sell the energy to the grid but still today the PR government haven't gave them to "OK" Regarding the G8 nations and why do they allow this... We are just a "disposable country". We are good to fight in war and to pay unplayable debts but not good enough for getting help. We did got paper towels.

I'm from the Bahamas. Back in 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hit the country back-to-back. The island I was living on at the time, Grand Bahama, was hit especially hard. Frances remained stationary over the island for three days; constant winds and rain for 72 long hours. Then, Jeanne came just two weeks later with nearly the same amount of force. The majority of the island was without power for three whole months. Food stores were closed for several weeks. All fresh supplies had to be shipped in by boat, which required us residents to stand in the hot sun at the harbor every single day HOPING we get a package. The situation was so bad, fights would break out over things like gas and ice. I was six at the time so my memory of all the details is foggy, but I do remember very clearly how hard it was. I say all this to make the point that I relate completely to the citizens of Puerto Rico. It's sad to see another natural disaster have this type of effect. Those who've never been through a storm (or other disaster) such as this can never fully comprehend how hard something like this is to deal with.
@morosis82
@morosis82 6 жыл бұрын
And they're only going to become more common, unfortunately. We have similar issues in far north Queensland, in Australia, and though being physically connected the rest of the country means the cleanup and rebuilding effort gets ahead a bit quicker, quite often for several weeks they are in much the same predicament, relying on fresh food and supplies being trucked in (sometimes flown in, when the trucks cannot get through) until power can be restored. Personally, I think with modern tech we can make this largely a thing of the past, except for the food component - distributed power and storage will have a huge effect on communities dealing with these types of tragedy.

I was raised in Salinas. I lived there for 25 yrs and now I am here in the States. I feel very sad for the citizens of Puerto Rico, but mostly the ones who live in center (Mountains) Puerto Rico. They are the ones suffering the most at this moment. Now I see this two guys (Javier and JehuG) helping people with most needs using money from their pockets and donations from people who watch this videos. Amazing work and God bless you guys.

So inspiring to hear great stories coming out of this disaster. Destruction can be a creative force. Great video and thanks for everyone helping PR when they needed help the most. This is what happen when you neglect for years the power grid in PR. It's a shame when the money needed to fix the grid and power plants, goes into politicians pockets. Also, housing constructions need to be approved before construction and inspected after the job is finished. Poor housing constructions = total destruction when a hurricane hits. Same goes for not maintaining the power grid. For years the Island was spared by many hurricanes. Complacent hit everyone thinking the island was untouchable by hurricanes. Politicians kept putting $$$$ in their pockets, making puerto ricans believing everything was ok and everything was getting fixed. I am glad things are getting better in PR, but next hurricane season is coming and I hope puerto ricans are safe and prepared for the season.

its a start! I could not imagine what hardships the people of Puerto Rico are going through. How they let their goverment over the years put them into total financial ruin through corruption and greed. Its my understanding that a lot of people incharge of major government agencies were not capable of running these agencies that provide the basic needs such as water, power and other utilities that are taken for granted in the United States. Hats of to those giving some temporary relief to those who need it.

Little known dilemma affecting the restoration of power on Puerto Rico: The Army Corp of Engineers' mandate only permits restoration to things as they were before sustaining damage. This is means that the ACoE can only rebuild the outdated, fossil fuel-powered, centralized grid, not update or improve it. Obsolete infrastructure elements no longer available now have to be custom fabricated off-shore at higher costs and long delays, rather than converting to a hybrid, distributed grid system, integrating solar, wind, hydro/tidal and battery storage! Before Hurricane Maria devastated PR, only 3% of power came from renewable energy sources. The bulk of the country's power generation was sourced from liquid fossil fuels that have to be shipped to the island. Ludicrous. PR, a US territory with no biting representation, is more populous than 21 states. It's shameful that so many US citizens remain without power, five months after Hurricane Maria. If this happened in New Orleans, or Houston, or in any other major city or state, the situation would be very, very different.

I'm glad to see someone is still paying attention to witness what is still happening to these Americans in Puerto Rico, because its clear the government doesn't care about its citizens.
