Күн бұрын

Many of our viewers already know a great deal about electric vehicles but if you’re new to this exciting technology and you’re looking to understand more, this latest episode might help dispel any concerns you may have…
Can you drive electric cars on ice?
Which handles winter conditions better? EV vs ICE!
Before the lockdown, Andy Torbet put the much publicised Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model S P90D electric cars through an extreme winter conditions test.
Granted, most of us don’t need to drive across frozen lakes in Northern Sweden to get to work, but as Andy says: if an electric car can handle conditions like these, it shows that they can handle pretty much anything the majority of us will face.
This is Andy Torbet’s first solo episode for Fully Charged and we’re chuffed to have him as part of the team. If Andy can handle a shoot in conditions like these, it shows that he can handle pretty much anything we throw at him. (Woolly) hats off to him!
“From ice driving slaloms, braking boxes, obstacle avoidance and an ice race-track this was about as tough a test for driving in winter conditions as you’ll get. I did also take the Tesla out on the normal snow-covered roads to see how it felt in real world conditions.
We look at some of the concerns about EVs in winter but also why an EV may actually be better and safer when driving in the ice and snow.
So can you drive a Tesla on ice, does an electric work in the cold, is an EV safe in winter? - tune in to find out.
Enjoy. I did.”
- Andy Torbet

A warm welcome in cold conditions to one of our new presenters, Andy Torbet - he joins Robert Llewellyn, Rory Reid, Chelsea Sexton, Helen Czerski and Maddie Moate, as Fully Charged aims to cover clean energy, electric cars and electric vehicles of all shapes & sizes. Andy's brief will include e-bikes, electric motorbikes and electric vans, as well as a few less conventional challenges. We started him off with a trip to Sweden (pre-lockdown), where he got to test his very particular skillset in a Tesla on an ice lake. If you like this, please subscribe and/or visit www.FullyCharged.Show.

I find a video entitled, "Can electric cars handle the cold?", to be all about how it handles with studded tires to be useless. How does it affect range? With the heater and defroster on? Does the defroster work well. First fully charged video I found disappointing. Oh well. I don't have studded tires and don't drive on frozen lakes. I am more concerned about the reduced range.

Have a peek at the KZfaq channel --Tesla Bjorn-- _Bjørn Nyland,_ he's in Norway, drives up into the arctic circle. He's been on frozen lake tracks like this a few times too. Beautiful countryside up there. He's owned a Model S, Model X (he's towed a lot of stuff!), currently has a Model 3, and occasionally borrows other EVs too. *EDIT:* oh it looks like his channel name is just his name: Bjørn Nyland. Also he's currently stuck in Thailand lol (driving an electric MG ZS, maybe hired?), he must've been visiting relatives when _the-cough-that-can't-be-named_ started closing borders. But he's still making vids as prolific as always, sometimes even remotely unlocking his Tesla back in Norway for his friends to drive & test things, very tech savvy.

roidroid. Your right. Bjørn Nyland was very early to own a Tesla in the first place, but allso very early to upload KZfaq videos with Tesla model S roadtrips videos all over the Norway in snowstorms and all kind of demanding winter conditions. And this was in the early years when Tesla only had superchargers on Lier Gol and Lillehammer. His videos was very informative and assured me and a lot of Norwegians that a Tesla can be used as the prime family car. Teslabjoern has contributed to well over 50.000 sold Teslas in Norway, especial the critical period i 2013 and 2014 when allmost all export was sent to Norway.

No discussion of AWD advantages over RWD/FWD, no discussion of preparing for winter, no battery management or pre-drive preparation (other than wiping the snow off), no discussion of tyres etc. Just a brief mention of warming the car up when plugged in. Nor any mention of the far more extreme winter testing from Audi / Mercedes / Jaguar et. al. So... nice cinematography, but basically just a Tesla ad.

Can an AWD car with winter tires handle the winter? Obviously. I think it's great Tesla brought you out on this trip however nothing was mentioned about how winter driving affects range, How much electricity it consumes keeping the battery warm. Winter driving isn't hard. Living day to day with an electric car when you can get to -40°C some days and the next town is 200km away is a totally different question. Now you may say "but that's an absurd edge case" but it's a real argument for a lot of people. I do know of one Model 3 up in Northern Quebec in that exact use case and it's fine. Just wish this video was something more than just the obviously paid trip to Northern Sweden by Tesla.

I was going to post the same comment. I love FC, I’m an EV convert (had an i3, now a Model 3), but I’m not sure this covered the subject well. As you say no real information about how range is affected, very Tesla-centric viewpoint (my i3 was horrific in the snow as the regen only acted on the rear wheels so was like pulling the handbrake when coming off the throttle quickly) and I think the reference to ICE car range being effected by winter conditions felt like a one-sided argument in favour of EVs, rather than the usual FC balanced argument. No issue with the new presenter, I suspect it was just an issue with it being a Tesla funded trip which limited the scope for the usual balance.

Generally up here in Northern Wisconsin we have many trucks and semi-trucks on the road that shed ice blocks occasionally, some of which can be quite large. Most of the time you see these and can navigate such that you avoid them, but there are instances where you do not and I am afraid that these ice blocks will totally destroy your front bumper and should the block mostly survive the collision and you drive over it, it will tear apart your rear end as well. Of course this applies to ICE cars with low suspension, which I have seen happen and in either case it is an expensive outing. I think the cyber truck would be the best choice for winter driving up in the Northern latitudes.

Samuel Baugh My view is that it has gone corporate. The wonders that can be produced when you just add money. I preferred the show when it was just Robert Llewelyn trundling around in his Prius with a guest. Jonny Smith was good too but he was too much of a gear head for the powers that now run the show. Corporate group think has now added more “attractive” hosts to make it “accessible”. I fear Mr. Llewelyn’s days are numbered and that success will be the death of what was a nice little production.

Norway here; the biggest factor of winter driving performance is the tyres (tires) you use. There are many brands of Nordic winter tyres not all as good as others, but there are also other winter tyres not suitable for the Nordics and designed for middle/northern Europe that handle better in the wet. Also all season tyres which are not good winter tyres. Sure, the low centre of gravity and weight balance of BEVs help with winter handling but those characteristics are of relatively minor importance compared to the tyres.

Though I found this video to be up to the usual very high standards of production that we are used to from this channel, I also found it to be really disappointing in terms of educational value. As a potential EV buyer I hoped to be informed about how EVs in general cope with winter conditions, what I got though was just an analysis of how well a Tesla model 3 handles on ice with studded tyres, something not relevant to me personally.

STruple12 They cope just fine, my colleague has on in Edmonton, Canada and loves the prewarming on the app before it’s even unplugged for his commute. They cope just fine, there is a % range drop of course, but it’s a similar range drop on a petrol car. Petrol engines hate starting at below -15. You should hear the squeal and grinding as a petrol engine starts then. The oil gets frozen in the sump. Plus at that temperature your lead acid battery life just sucks. Then there’s the square tires for the first few miles, until they unfreeze. Basically cold kills engines, motors don’t care, and all battery’s dislike it to varying degrees.

Nice video! Was that an AWD or RWD version? As any Canadian will tell you tires can make all the difference during winter driving, you were using studded tires and for icy conditions they are best. What most channels espousing the virtues of EV cars fail to mention is you cannot charge or discharge li-ion batteries if the temperature of the battery is below 0 degrees Celsius. The only slight reference you made to this was the locals recommending leaving it plugged into the mains until ready to use it. If it is not plugged in the heat required to maintain the battery above freezing comes from the battery itself. This would significantly affect range. People have a right to know all the upsides and downsides to owning and operating an EV. Winter driving tip: brake before you turn.

It’s a nice ad, but as someone who drives a Tesla in wintery Finland, there is barely a shred of information here. No mention about how if the battery is cold, your car won’t regen brake at all, consume about 50% more energy etc. It’s still the best winter car I’ve driven. Being able to turn on the heater from your phone so you’ll never have to get in a cold car is probably the best feature ever. The anti spin and anti slip systems are also best in class and have saved me from slipping off the road a couple of times.

Enjoyed the video but studded tires take all the relation to real life away from the learning experience. We drove our Model 3 in real winter conditions all winter here in Canada and it performed well. With good snow tires on both it and our 2010 Dodge Caravan both performed well. We live in the country, on unpaved back roads so we know winter driving. I didn't find this video all that helpful. I did a winter exercise very similar to what was portrayed in the video with my van and my 16 year old niece about 6 years ago....we did bang into a few snow banks...but we didn't have studded tires. This aside my only real beef with the video is the comment that we should bundle up in hats and parkas to drive our $100K + vehicles in the winter so that we can achieve somewhat reasonable range. This sucks...and is my only real complaint with my Tesla. I have to put up with a shorter range than my van and I have to be uncomfortable as well...this needs to change....and please don't tell me my ICE vehicle loses range when the heater is on...it's literally imperceptible. I am an EV fan through and through but let's not minimize the real negatives...let's find a way to fix them instead.

I'm thinking we could have answered the question without the ice lake fun - but it wouldn't have been as interesting. Anyway - welcome addition to the team.

Not a Swede, but I'll give it a go. Expect 20-30% loss of range. In really extreme winther conditions with no pre-heating, up to 40% loss. But normally throughtout the winter season, 20-30% loss is my experience, living in the middle of Norway. Tesla owner for 4 years, on my third model S.

Yes, I have no doubt that the Tesla performs when it comes to handling and such in winter conditions. But I can see many problems with the designs of the BEV's of today when it comes to winter condition. One of them is charging it over night during a snowstorm and no garage to put them in... I'd like to see a video addressing that as well.

I think Teslas solution with their relatively small charge port probably handles it much better than many other designs. The problem as I see it is that almost all designs opens the flap to the side and then it is tilted slightly upwards, which means the snow will build up there. And if it is around the freezing point, and the downpour is a mix between snow and rain.. Well, you're asking for trouble..

No disrespect, but if you want to test an EV car and if it can handle the cold, you should try it against real cold. Try something like Saskatchewan, Canada in winter where it can often reach below -30C . It can often be a challenge for combustion cars, as oil and batteries freeze in the extreme cold. It would be a true test for an EV car.

We mulled this over long and hard. These are surprisingly difficult decisions. Because this was a more basic episode, i.e. for people less familiar with EVs and less in depth than a lot of our output, we took the opportunity to be broader with the title, as a huge % of people instantly think Tesla is beyond their financial reach and won't watch. We take your point though. In truth, whichever way we label the episodes we will get criticised. Thanks, Fully Charged Dan

Andy Torbet seems like a nice addition, but this episode had a bit too much of a Tesla infomercial feel to it for me. I would have been interested in the user experience if the testers had been given their cars the day before to be left outside the hotel without power over night. I.e. If the car has to use the battery to warm itself up before use, how long does that take & what impact on the remaining range?
@benburton3496
@benburton3496 4 жыл бұрын
No comparison to cold temperature range of a I.C. and battery. Parked standing for a week not plugged in you will consume the battery in keeping the battery warm. Hench start the car plugged in for 15mins before driving it. These tesla's lucky to get 100 to 150 miles in extreme cold temperatures and cant be left overnight without having it plugged in. More of a promotional video than any sort of review, was hoping this was going to change after Red dwarf.

In my experience the biggest factor to affect range in winter conditions is heating, even with a heat pump. ICE cars have heating as a byproduct of driving, EVs don't. And some of the energy you might save by going slower, is eaten up by having to use heating for longer. Good show
@stealeyful
@stealeyful 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, ICE cars get heating as a byproduct, but that's only because the engines are inefficient. Don't the electric motors and the battery radiate some heat when working? Could any of that be captured? Just asking.

The coldest weather I had was -20C with diesel toyota yaris, It started right away even tho its diesel, some people were reporting -30C is also ok for most modern cars with fuel injection, maybe -35-40C is where the fun starts, but then there is Webasto or whatever its called that people in such climates would use. At 6:16 you can see its -4C which is a joke, I had this "winter" last week in Estonia. At -30C Tesla will work but will not allow you to use full power until its heated up, pretty much same story with ICE car which has run-by-wire. Good Tesla ad, poor title and poor test. Really want to put dislike but i guess whatever.

Sorry guys, that felt like top gear of fifteen years ago. A modern 4wd car with spiked tyres and stability control handles well on ice, who knew? Could you not have just taken it on a 200 mile drive? Maybe shown us some of Swedens historic places, somewhere you might have trained. How about some of Swedens charging infrastructure? Or a local who owns an ev and has some insight? The question I want answered about an ev is if I drive to the North West of Scotland in winter to go climbing, in - 10, how is it going to effect my range. Can I get back to the car where its been parked in a layby all day and reliably drive home. Andy is your action man. Let's see him test an ev like he would use it. Rental pick up from an airport or train station. Gear carrying space with a mate to an activity. Diving, skiing or climbing for instance. How does the car support you doing that? Please keep up the good content.

Sorry, but this seemed more like an advertisement for Tesla than an independent test. It looks like the scenario was an idea of Tesla's rather than something thought up by fullycharged. The range issue was glossed over, the tests were useless as I never use studded tires, no comparison with other cars, and no criticism for the car or brand at all. I liked the new guy, camera work, sound, etc. But wanted a review, not an advertisement.

Nice cinematographic shots, but can it handle the cold? I'm missing a few very important aspects: * You must preheat your car, otherwise the handles could be frozen or * the frameless doors don't lower the window, pulling almost the sealing out of the car. * snow on the trunk will very likely slide into the trunk * the radar sensor gets covered by snow, and then no autopilot or speed controll is available any more * the big front lights have a huge glass surface which gets frozen very easily. this reduced the sight dramatically at night. I never had this issue with other cars. The rest is nearly perfect. I like the handling on ice very much. It steers just by using the brakes in that angular speed as you would exptect it on a dry street. It's amazing.

This is interesting, because as a Canadian here.... Winter and batteries are a concern. They just are, and this gives me a lot of the basics. First off, Andy Torbet. Welcome man, fullycharaged is welcome to having you and so do I. Covid aside, I hope you have more planed. Second off, to fullychargedshow. Call me a little disappointed that this was mostly focused on the Tesla. It's not bad pre se, but there is a growing market of EV's on the roads today and their winter performance is something that I would like to see covered in more depth. Every single EV is different, many don't have the Auto-controls that a Tesla does, so again... as the native Canadian that does deal with some fierce winters (and road maintenance similar to the US, alot of salt and dirt), it would be nice to see what EV's are made of in the Winter.

Im saddened by the missed opportunity to tell us, how much in these conditions the range was reduced. I also noticed that the drivers side window was all misted up, using localised heating sources is all well and good, but good visibility is even better. As someone considering a EV for my next work vehicle, I want to know the warts and all facts about EV's, rather than just being told both EV's and combustion engined vehicles perform worse in cold weather by a EV fanboy. When I regularly see real world unbiased warts and all facts about EV's, so I can make a informed choice where to spend my hard earned money, then I will be more likely to stick my hand in my pocket to purchase one. This was more EV topgear then factual. I live in hope that true factual reviews will become the norm, and that in the next 12-24 months there will be many EV's that either meet or exceed my needs.

Very impressive to see how it handles ice and snow! It does leave me wondering how it copes with everyday life in places with strong winters. What happens if you leave a fully charged car on the street during the night in the freezing cold and return to it in the morning. Will you return to a drained battery or does it impact the battery's life in any way? It would be very interesting to hear about that!

The only drawback from driving an EV in the cold is the reduction in range which can be up to 50%. For the rest, it is a car, a bit heavy but still a car. This should be a well know fact by now. Living in Canada, I can tell you the slippery bit of winter driving is not the worst part, you get use to it and drive accordingly, it is the lack of visibility with slush and blowing snow filling up your windshield, window, mirrors and your lights.

Me, in Saskatchewan: “Cold? But... he can touch the door handles without a glove! It’s warm enough for clouds! The snow is slightly damp, rather than a crystalline powder that screams when trod on! That hain’t cold!” HOWEVER earlier this year, when we had a week below -30c, the local news featured some EV drivers talking about their cold weather experience. It was, essentially, trying not to giggle openly when driving past ICE cars that couldn’t start after sitting unused for a couple of hours without jumper cables.

Very true, particularly noticeable in my '71 Kombi. Of the course the greater available power means more fuel use=less range. Of course, the use of the heater doesn't affect the range of an ICE vehicle as the heat comes from the built-in inefficiency of an iCE.
