Paragliding certification process has made this sport a lot safer over the years. Unfortunately the paragliding community has misunderstood what the certification dose and what our wings are capable of doing.

I'm just a fat guy that's flying at the very top of the weight range on the biggest epsilon 9 I could get with just an ordinary harness that has a board seat. The company says right in the advertising"the epsilon 9 will fly better through turbulent air if you just put your hands up. However active flying is recommended ". I want the 7 years of electrical engineering school and I think if the guy sitting at that desk decided that that epsilon 9 would fly better with your hands up it might be a good idea to go with that. I'm just starting out I'm doing my ground handling and it might take a long time for me to get the ground handling down well enough to fly. I always believed in that guy over there the advance company math Guy. I had trouble understanding what he said that putting your hands up was the wrong thing to do when it was going to shoot and gift wrap you I thought. I have to think something and I thought the epsilon 9 flying along at trim speed with my hands up would be a pretty stable platform. Why is it incorrect that the company said I could squeak by on my lack of skills by putting my hands up and taking my chances. Pilot error is the number one problem so which error is better to have your hands down when you should have had them up or to have your hands up when you should have had them down? The wrong thing is to hit the ground the right thing is anything else.

Hi, I am a beginner paramotor student, 62 years old and 80kg. I have been advised the APCO F5 school version will be a good starter. Would you please give me your opinion? Can I use this wing for free flight also?

Coming back to the point that Malin made that certification does produce usefull discrete categories (e.g. an EN-A is indeed the "best" wing for a beginner despite the limitation of the certification). I wonder if something should be done to the EN-B category. There is such an heterogeneity in wing characters that it doesn't seem as useful as the other categories. Wings are rated based on their max rating across all 30-ish manoeuvers. It results in the NOVA-ION (single b rating for large accelerated collapse) being in the same category as the 777-rook (many b's across the certification page and a reputation for being as spicy as some C wing). Now they are collaquialy being refered as B- and B+ respectively but maybe that should be made more official/standardized ? Would it be better if manufacturers systematically reported both the max rating (like now) and the average rating ? Personally I just enjoy having a look at the certification document whenever I'm curious about a wing (for my wing size/loading) but I don't think many casual pilots like me do it. Speaking of which, it's sometimes hard to locate the right certification document for some brands... that'd be an easy area for improvement. ps: loving the serie of interviews with Malin ! Good idea to focus on one topic at a time.

Valid points. I will have an interview with Air Turquoise later this year, we will discuss this topic in more detail then. I think they are considering some changes. Stay tuned for updates, I'm planning to release that interview around December.

I've been looking at this problem for some time with the number of mathematical solutions in mind. If you compared every glider going in a circle 100 ft in diameter, the glide angle difference between those two states would allow a straight line comparison of every member of every class. It dives into a turn, the difference in these two angles defines energy.

People are looking to much at the EN rating instead of reading the manufacturers recomendation and intended target group. This is usually quite correct as the manufacturer wants the customer to be happy and feel safe so they return and buy more in the future.

@@SuperAnatolli there's very little way to measure something like these wings and compare them mathematically in the en system does that. I bought an epsilon 9 to learn on because I got a deal on the lessons. They said they would let me try on a wing. I looked at the ratings I read the reviews I read all the manufacturers recommendations for people with a lot more money than I have and I decided it was doable.I listen to anybody's opinion but, I work in a machine shop I did engineering and I do math so the en system at least has some numbers. I don't make a decision based on who had the prettiest salesperson Do you?

@@markmcgoveran6811 The EN-test has some numbers. But are they relevant for real flying? Yes, and no. They are not an answer but more of a direction. C glider tends to be more demanding than B gliders, but that is not to take for granted. Based on own expereience, I rather trust the manufacturer over a reviewer.

I think he is going to say that gliders are not tested in turbulence for that reason certification doesn’t mean they are safe in the real world, and that’s why SIV is important.
