Can Synthetic Engine Oil Help Prevent Intake Carbon Deposits?

This video about car engine oil will be focusing on three questions:
1. Why do modern engines have carbon build up?
2. How can engine oil help prevent carbon deposits?
3. How do you know if the oil you’re buying helps prevent carbon build up?
Unlike many older engines, modern engines are trending towards turbocharged, downsized, direct injection engines for efficiency benefits. But these changes now create unique challenges for newer engines, which have higher internal pressures and temperatures, and a lack of port injectors. Looking at the intake valve on a gasoline engine with direct injection, we need to think about all of the different ways that contaminants can contact these intake valves.
1. First off, blow-by from combustion can reach the intake valves through the positive crankcase ventilation system, which prevents the crankcase pressure from getting too high.
2. The PCV system also means that as the lighter part of the engine oil evaporates, it can pass by the intake valves.
3. You can also have exhaust gases routed back to the intake valves, through an exhaust gas recirculation system, typically used for emissions purposes, which carry combustion contaminants. Remaining exhaust gases can also contact the intake valve from inside the combustion chamber when the intake valve opens.
4. Finally, engine oil can leak down the valve guides and contact the intake valves, especially as oil viscosities continue to become thinner for efficiency purposes.
In direct injection engines, the oil itself is really all you’ve got to actively protect your intake valves. The oil itself is composed of about 80% base oil, and 20% additives, both of which play a role in fighting carbon deposits. From a base oil standpoint, you don’t want molecules that break down or evaporate with heat, but at the same time they should have good flow characteristics at low temperatures. This means you don’t want overly large or overly small molecules, molecules that aren’t fully saturated with hydrogen or overly long straight chain molecules. The wrong molecular structure can break down with heat and form deposit precursors. These precursors will attach to intake valves, pistons, and cylinder walls, and form deposits. This is where the additives come in, particularly detergents and dispersants.
Detergents have a hydrocarbon tale and a polar head, usually a metal.This means one end, the polar head, likes to bond to metallic surfaces, while the other end deflects deposits and prevents them from bonding to the metal surface. If precursors can’t contact the metal surfaces, they can’t form deposits.
Now dispersants also have a hydrocarbon tale and a polar head, however the tale is a bit longer than detergents, and the polar head isn’t quite as strong. The hydrocarbon tale likes oil, while the polar head likes water, metals, and contaminants, basically the things you don’t want. So as a deposit precursor is floating around in the oil, the dispersants will attach to it, keeping the contaminant suspended so it doesn’t attach to metal surfaces. From there it can either be filtered out as it passes through the oil filter, or kept suspended until you change the oil.

I switched to the Valvoline modern engine almost a year ago and since doing so in my Ford focus ST I’m seeing about 40 to 50% less oil in my catch can so that’s proof enough for me that it’s working.

@@Mike-Capz83 I would recommend pennzoil ultra. It's the only oil that's made of natural gas so it burns better and it's more pure than other oils. I put it in my gs300 with gdi and have had no issues with burning with 5k mile intervals

Castrol Edge is shown to have the best resistance to carbon buildup (by tests run for AMSOIL). That's why I use it in my 2019 MAZDA CX 5 2.5 L. CDI with a turbo. I also run a Cork Sport oil catch can to prevent carbon buildup on the intake valves from PCV emissions. BUT... if you have a Direct Injection only engine (no port injectors) then every 40,000 miles you should go to a garage that uses B-16 brand engine cleaning system, pay $70. -$90. and get your engine cleaned. B-16 works better than SeaFoam for this purpose.

This will depends from grades and blends, also this change through years, so 2 years later it could be Pennzoil that are now the best. Oil analysis is the best tool. Normally engine oil made in Germany or France like Liquimoly or Motul will be the best you can get. Up to you.

There's a trade-off between the long oil change intervals that new oils can achieve and carbon buildup due to fuel dilution and viscosity decreases that occur with time. That's why some manufacturers like Hyundai-Kia have stuck with shorter recommended change intervals, especially under a severe use cycle (3-3.7K miles).

not really he failed to explain how engine oil without getting on the vavles will clean your valves. If the oil is getting on the valves you have a serious issue with the engine. This was nothing but an add I can't believe he even agreed to do this it is such BS

@@mysliwya I agree with you, but I think he assumed we'd follow... if particles are suspended, then when blow-by happens, the oil mist hitting the valve doesn't matter since it won't stick.

Typically I have a favorite brand of fuel and a favorite brand of engine oil, not the same brand. Your very informative videos on sludge/carbon build up in modern engines has me thinking that maybe I need to consider fuel and lubricants that are designed to work together as you would hope a single brand might. For instance, should I consider using Shell fuel and lubricants, as an example? Or Mobil fuel and lubricants? Rather than mixing WAWA or Flying J premium fuel and Mobil 1 lubricants as I do now? We own a 2005 VW since new with a 1.8T, notorious for sludge buildup. To date using Mobil 1 lubricants, specifically 0w40, after 125k miles no issues. Engine runs fine, good fuel economy, only routine maintenance.. In several other VWs, all purchased new, I have used european spec oil, Motul, with similar results up to 200k. BTW after reading about the VW dealership fiasco many years ago using regular oil in the 1.8T, which caused the sludge issue, I have always supplied the engine oil when getting service from dealerships.

Hey Mate, always love watching your videos; very informative and intriguing. I noticed you said that oil is 80% base oil and 20% additives. Is that the basic ratio for all oil or is that valvoline's special mix for modern cars? Cheers

It's a fair ratio for many of the oils out there. Many will range from about 80-90% base oil, with 10-20% additives.

I have said this before I'll say it again, please do a video on different types of base oil. Specifically group 4 and group 5(preferably esters). The thing that I would really like to know is how good is an engine oil with a group 5 base oil (ester based, like Chemlube or Motul) is compared to a group 3 with additives(say Mobil 1 with emission system protection). Since esters are natural detergents, how effective are they when compared to a group 3 or 4 base oil with additives?

Hello Jason, Great explanation as always! Here's a thought: why diesel engines never seem to experience intake valve carbon build up (they do, but not nearly as much as gasoline engines), although they the same "recipe for disaster" i.e: egr, direct injection and turbos...?

Yeah, I've been wondering the same thing. There's been decades of turbo charged, high compression (of course higher with diesel), direct injected engines with fewer issues of carbon buildup. What's the difference beside the fuel?

Because gasoline engines require an amount of air specific to burn the gasoline injected in the combustion chamber. If the engine needs more air than the actually given, it will shake or not work properly, carbon buildup makes this problem. Diesel engines instead only need injection with full quantity of air always, which is why most of them don't own a throttle body. Because of this, when carbon buildup appears on a diesel engine, the engine will slowly loss power without the user noticing because of the way it works. Gasoline engines have vacuum on the intake manifold, which makes the carbon buildup adhere more strongly on the ports. Indirect injection helped clean the valves, but with this crap GDI engines as the injector is located in the upper side of the combustion chamber, valves cannot be cleaned.

This sounds like advertising, would have been interesting to know how the product compares to other synthetic oils and even any real world test have been carried out on DI car engines that have a reputation for significant carbon build up on their inlet valves

The only difference between him and me is I'm unpaid for products I like. He never said Valvoline was better or worse than others. Just the facts. It's up to us to see it as good on Valvoline. I've personally repaired direct injection engines using BG fuel system cleaner. Feel free to take a look.

My Subaru dealership uses Mobil 1 full synthetic in my Forester XT. I guess I should check to see if it has all the certifications as the Valvoline full synthetic. Thanks for the info. Great video! 👍

Mobil 1 is (in my opinion) the industry standard that everyone compares to and emulates. I would be surprised if the use of it ever gave you any issues.

George, while I personally have never owned one I have heard nothing but praise for most of the Subaru lineup. Many of my friends have reached 200,000 + miles with no issues, although their Subaru engines are not turbocharged. My friends have been known to drive their cars like they stole them, so reaching 200,000 miles + is saying something.

here's a question for you. overfilling the engine oil, by a lot or a little, how does it affect the engine and could it be better to top it off just slightly above max level for people who don't regularly check the engine oil level giving them more of a margin for oil usage or leaking.

Overfilling leads to aeration of the oil. Aeration leads to increased bearing wear and more rapid oxidation of the oil. Think about it, if the oil level is higher then it has that much less distance to travel (slosh) before contacting the crank. This is why high performance engines use a dry sump. Which I won't be surpised when manufactures impliment into mass produced vehicles. Windage trays can only do so much.

@@valdius85yes, while cornering a dry sump system won't be starved for oil. They can also put the engine lower in the chassis for better weight distribution and by extension, cornering grip.

No matter what you do or what oil you use, DI engines will ALWAYS get carbon buildup on the valves. It is just a matter of how long it will take.

Yup. A catch can can really help out with this along with regularly using injector cleaners. Both of these can extend how long it'll take until build up becomes a issue.

Don't some newer direct injection engines incorporate a small amount of port injection for the sole purpose of keeping the intake valves clean? 30% reduction in deposits is cool and all, but I'm sure the intake valves will still gunk up pretty bad without something being sprayed on the valves.

I've read some DI engines are engineered for a staggered/random squirt from the injector just as the valve is opening or closing. It's tough to find definitive information on the exact engine program, possibly because makers see it as a trade secret or perhaps I just don't know where to look (or proper keywords to find it?).

I've spoken with a few companies about this, most of them (and I'm not sure why) are hesitant to say that the addition of port injection is to keep the valves clean (maybe they have other DI applications in their lineup)? When I ask, usually they say the combination is done for efficiency purposes, as some port injection is preferred for low loads, while direct is preferred for higher loads.

@@EngineeringExplained If they admit the port injectors are there to combat carbon buildup, then they have admitted that DI engines have an inherent problem of carbon buildup. I would imagine they might be worried about a huge class action lawsuit.

It's important to use a good fuel injection cleaner. Some of my favorite fuel injection cleaners are Marvel Mystery Oil which lubricates the fuel system and protects gaskets. Another really good fuel injection cleaner additive is Amsoil oil pi fuel additive which cleans all the ethanol varnish out of your fuel system in one full tank of gas also cleans the varnish off your valves and gets you up to 5.7% better fuel mileage in just one treatment. It's amazing we still have good quality products that can combat the ethanol delinquencies......lol

the logic that applies to port injection engines where the fuel mixture passes over the valves doesn't apply to direct injection engines where the fuel mixture does not pass over the valves. Eye find myself constantly reminding myself of that in addressing this issue, an example of prior knowledge interfering w new learning. You might get 67% of the benefits using top tier gas and very good fuel injection cleaners but it is not addressing the the uniqueness of this problem, it is the hurdle of that final 33%. A fuel injection cleaner or top tier gas cannot clean or prevent valve deposits if it doesn't pass over the valves. the owners of 2nd generation direct injection engines that have hybrid dual port designs might be rescued but owners of pure direction engines are probably feeling stranded right now. if Top Tier gasoline has 5% ethanol vs 10% in cheap gas that might help since me thinks ethanol would make fuel dilution > oil supply an even worse problem esp for gaskets / seals.

alot of diesel engine with PCV EGR, im sure the intake valve more dirty than GDI...but 10yrs old still running and powerful..no problem at all

great video once again.. would be interesting to see the effects on a rotary engine as its known only to use mineral based oils in there engine to prevent carbon issue which does happen.. -Engineered explained- have you had any experience in a rotary engine its self at all with pro an cons with the use of oils and reliability suggestions pros and cons at all.. be great to see something along those lines etc..

You need to do either fleet tests or laboratory tests. Claims to the contrary, all oils perform about the same, even no-name oils. Just maintain the change interval. On my vehicle, I can do an $11 oil change in ten minutes, with a drain pan I can take directly to the parts store for recycle. The filter is vertical and drains completely. I can remove it without tools.

This new Valvoline is quite expensive and has a higher noack (vaporization) number than a much cheaper bottle of Quaker State. Is it relying on the oil vapor itself to clean the valves?

William Ablett ... EGR and other "eco" tech are really what causes issues with carbon build up... An oil catch can is a must for forced induction vehicles, on the PCV system. You can control or reduce carbon by disabling your EGR systems, however that is illegal. PCV system is not the cause of carbon build up and should not be disabled or bypassed, which is illegal to do so according to the EPA

gary miller ... PVC stands for Polyvinyl chloride, it is a plastic used in plumbing pipes... You might have meant a PCV or "Positive Crankcase Ventilation" system is a one way passage for the blow-by gases to escape, preventing sludge build up and other issues. An oil catch can works well on an PCV system for forced induction vehicles... BUT that is NOT the cause of carbon build up on valves... I was addressing the original comment about pointing the PCV system to the ground.... NO I actually meant that the EGR or "Exhaust Gas Recirculation" system, it is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This is part of the major issue that causes the valves to build up excessive amounts of carbon. The PCV system would actually force some water vapor and oil vapor back in to the intake on a N/A car, which would reduce the carbon build up... BUT the issue is with forced induction systems the PCV is routed before the turbo intake... and causes oil and water vapor to collect in the intake tube and can get on to the air filter. I had this issue with my car since it used a recirculative Blow-off valve... ever time that valve would open it would push the oil and water vapor coming from the PCV system back on to the air filter... SO once I installed a oil catch can, this prevented that vapor from getting on to the engine air filter. Hope this clears up the confusion... My original comment was actually two different parts and was not very concise...

MasterMech77 what car was it? My Saab 9-5 has a very similar system but when i swapped air filters the old filter looked very clean on the inside. A car which was very well known for having PCV problems and oil sludge. Mine has the upgraded PCV so mine is good and oil sludge free.

A good quality catch can is also a good idea, although it's kind of a pain in the ass during winter weather due to having to drain it all the time. My 2.7 Ecoboost F150 drained nearly a gallon of water, oil and gas during the winter months. Drained it weekly. I also use Amsoil Signature Series 5w30. Basically direct injection is a bad solution in my opinion.

I have VW Jetta TDI (diesel) 2002 with 266k on it and the intake and EGR valve are almost completely closed with carbon build-up. I use Delvac 5W40 and change the oil and filter at 10k (VW recommended). Is there a solution to this issue, such as a fuel additive, regular EGR maintenance, or other? I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. They are professional and well researched. Thank you for producing them.

How much did Vavoline pay you for this product to be featured on your channel? I personally have gone with Amsoil since they we're the first original 100% synthetic oil for airplanes with no petroleum base that ends up gunking your intake valves. Also, the researcher I talked to provided that fuel dilution in the oil due to fuel pressure in the cylinder forcing fuel past the rings which causes the Low speed preignition around rings and causes worse and worse engine performance and wear nowadays before you even reach the time manufacturers well before recommended drain intervals. I tried all different Full synthetics available in stores like auto zone pep boys and O'Reilly for the last 3 years and none solved the crisis with Direct injection like Amsoil's Signature series has for mine. Oil alone will not solve the issue as an upper cylinder lubricant seems to now be required to also prevent friction that ends up retarding ignition timing and detuning your engines performance. Going from 87 to 89 octane from top tier ls like Chevron does help with fuel mileage probably due to all the preignition due to higher chamber compression pressures and lower tolerance of 87 to not detonate under extreme pressure along with carbon deposits on the intake messing with the airflow patterns that would lead to better optimized fuel and air mixing before ignition. I know you try and keep it simple for the layman to get good info but it would be cool if you had a channel that went more in depth about more details just beyond basics. Maybe make it Engineering Explained (Serious Tuners edition). Be good for promoting people to get into the industry

An Italian tuneup usually refers to a process whereby a motor vehicle engine is run at full load for extended periods in order to burn carbon buildup from the combustion chambers, spark plugs, and exhaust system.

Great information, it means 30% improvement that still will not solve intake valve build up issues in most direct injected engines from Hyundai, VW, BMW, Benz, and Honda.

@@therealSIRBOOM Catch Can reduce a bit of carbon deposit but the main cause is the actual intake manifold design itself. Especially if it has an EGR line or any kind of recirculation system.

I bought the service plan which cost £400, the same as for every car. I booked it in a month before. On the day they didn't have some of the filters which I found odd, I asked the delivery driver who said they only have one barrel of oil in the workshop.

I run the platnum, not ultra platnum. Was running the ultra platinum then switched to Redline in my Civic but it was such a pain in the ass to order either of them. NOVAK numbers are decent and it's on a local shelf when I need it. I run a magnet on the drain plug and one inside of the filter. I figure that's enough to survive the recommended interval with out too much trash being circulated.

Man from Nantucket yes. 100% synthetic like motul use group 4 pao oil. Full synthetic oil are fake synthetic: they can use wherever oils they wont(most like mobil 1, ecc use rigenerated oil) cuz there are no rules to respect.

Mr. Engineer, I watch your channel regularly. This show, I have a question. The little, but necessary, piston ring flutter, allows blow-by during power stroke, & also a bit of oil suck-up during intake stroke? What happens to this oil in the rings when it's met by hot combust gases in the power stroke? Does it burn cleanly? How do the additives in the oil burn? i.e. Do they leave deposits in the rings? & the oil rings? & their drain holes? Then there's a question about how phosphorous, presumably burned, affects the cat? A response from you would be good - A full vid on these questions would be better? What would Valvoline say?
