Manchester United have appointed the highly sought after Erik Ten Hag as their manager for next season. The Ex ajax manager impressed during his time in the Netherlands, with intricate build-up patterns and intricate midfield rotations. He became the fastest manager to win 100 games, after only 128 games in charge, and also helped Ajax regain their status as a consistent champion’s league side, reaching the semi-finals in 2018-19 after knocking out real madrid and Juventus.
He’s a manager that’s very open about his footballing philosophy, stating how he “wants to have possession and hurt the opponent. Everyone is attacking [and] everyone is defending”. But how does this translate on the pitch, and what will it mean for man united?
Ten hag has his work cut out for him at man united. I seriously hope United don't sack Erik if they don't finish in the top 4. There must be a long term vision. Klopp himself took 3 years and his first year, Liverpool was hot and cold all the time but eventually their fitness levels improved and the telepathy between players came. Erik ten Hag will face a similar situation trying to teach a new intensive possession based style to a team that is wholly missing in this very aspect : intensive fitness needed to press and constantly switch positions. We actually need replacements in the recruitment department. lots have left but only Andy Boyle has came in. unless there are small appointments that came in under the radar without much fanfare. It actually seems like they are understaffed in the departments to support Erik ten Hag.

@@ltpretty5278 Not the best start but we're 6 points off top. Considering we've had injuries to basically everyone, all three left backs out for some time, our defensive partnership as Maguire and Evans and some horrendous VAR luck... I'd say it's been okay. I think most teams would struggle with the amount of injuries we've had.

This, even more so, exposes how far behind the squad is to be able to implement what ten Hag or any modern manager would demand. The core of the defence lacks players with the ability to play ball, progress, move and make space at the highest level, they can't keep a high line, don't close the counter quick enough, and often drop their line out of fear of getting turned or being too slow. And this vulnerability then affects the mentality of the whole team, makes every chance a high pressure situation, making them treat ball like hot potato. They fear that if they lose ball and counterpress, they don't have a backline up with them.

Keep Ronaldo and sack the rest starting with Harry the fridge, Ronaldo has proven he is not the problem. 25 goals, 3rd top scorer in the league on a team that all against him. They all hate him, and only because they are tired of hearing and seeing his name, they hate him for having such dominance in the game for so long. What they keep ignoring purposely is he’s earned that, he’s been consistently scoring at the highest level, performing at the highest left, being the best at the highest level for 20 YEARS! not by luck, not by favoritism, straight grind, focus and hard work. They hate him because he is constant remind of they’re own personal failures, they’re issues are deeper than they are willing to accept and deal with

As he can't get rid of them all, there's only De Gea, Sancho Elanga, and Ronaldo really worth definitely keeping. Bruno if he can turn round his atrocious form and Ten Hag can fit him in his system. Looking at the system, none of the full backs are up to the task and Maguire and Lindelof arent ball playing defenders who are comfortable bringing the ball out.

Things aren't any further forward Two undeserved home wins against relegation candidates and two defeats against good teams. 50 mil spent on a keeper when it wasn't the main problem. 50 mil on Mount when could have got Maddison cheaper and 70 mil on an unproven forward with a suspected back streas problem.

re fullbacks - I too like Brandon Williams and believe he should be given a chance - I'm not a fan of Dalot or Wan Bissaka - so maybe Williams should play right, and Shaw left. I think Maguire is very over-criticised - he's a decent player who can use the ball - so yes, maybe with Timber added. I think we have to upgrade from MacFred. De Jong wouldn't do any harm - and I'd take Neves probably - Rice would be ideal but it doesn't look as if we can get him. So De Jong and Neves with Bruno might be an option - or De Beek should be given a good try. I wouldn't write off Rashford - even though he's had an awful season. You don't suddenly become a terrible player. Sancho and Ronaldo should both start. I enjoyed the video analysis -t hanks

Dalot is far better than Bran is dude, lmao he's a modern fullback with excellent speed, stopping and crossing. Maguire is certainly better than people give him credit for, but he needs to be on time out after this awful season and Timber (or even Pau Torres) could slot into that space with ease as they are both better with the ball.

I like your content. But I don't think Maguire has anything to do with their defense issues. Da Gea and their constant losses of possession up the pitch is where the problem comes from, in my opinion.

the fact is it's the opposite I've watched every single utd game yes de gea passing is a problem but it should be last on the list. we need to get a new cb to replace maguire cause he is simply not good enough. 3 mids a striker a rb a winger and then after that we can look to replace de gea

Any defence that has to face that amount of pressure the Utd backline faces due to the midfield's inability to retain the ball would look bad. And that's why I say Maguire has nothing to do with Utd's defensive woes. Is he the best defender out there? No. But he isn't the cause of your problems. Retain possession more up the pitch and find the right keeper to help build play out from the back and Maguire looks like a god. I know this is an unpopular opinion but it's a well thought through fact.
