Exercise can be a really helpful component in prevention of mental health problems. It is also another form of metabolic therapy which can also help to improve your mental health at a cellular level. While it is not an effective treatment on it's own, it can be a useful part of improving your metabolic and mental health.
Studies mentioned in the video:
'Dynamic changes in DICER levels in adipose tissue control metabolic adaptations to exercise' - www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas...

Honestly, I’m pretty depressed an awful lot. I go into the gym and still feel the same way, I leave and still feel the same way but it isn’t as bad when I’m going home. Going to the gym has definitely giving me a reason to keep living through dark days. It doesn’t heal you, but it’s like a pill - helps you numb some symptoms/pain or whatever

For people who are new to exercising regularly, although HIIT can seem hard and probably unsafe, and rightly so when your tendons and bones aren't conditioned yet, please remember that most studies show that in the beginning, ANY exercise that increases your heart rate sufficiently can be considered intense enough to improve metabolism. That means very sedentary people atfirst benefit from light cardio as much as a habituated person would from HIIT. So the takeaway is any exercise at a challenging level FOR YOU is helpful to your mitochondria! Take small steps over weeks and months and they will be enough.

I believe in exercise, of course. What actually triggers hypomania is the workout. I can’t keep that sense of power and control from going over the window of tolerance. For me, the exercise that helps the most is a nice and calm walk, no headphones, which causes me to travel in thought too much. I need to be grounded, paying attention to my surroundings. Maybe I will be able to do more of that workout someday, but for now, the mild is being helpful
@alex-ty8zr
@alex-ty8zr Ай бұрын
I have exactly the same issues: more exercise seems to cause hypomania (or is it the other way around?) and listening to music while exercising encourages my thoughts to race and eventually grandiosity starts to creep in. A walk through the countryside without headphones, just being present, is what works best for me.

Bonus points if your exercise comes with a social network like a regular group exercise class or team sport. Most of my exercise comes from karate and I couldn’t do life without my dojo family. A lot of people there know about my crazy and are very supportive, giving me space when I need it and calling me out if I need a reality check because I don’t notice what’s going on with my mental health.

I can’t work out with aerobic exercise like running, but instead I do strength training and it’s genuinely so impactful for my life. It gives me structure in my day for planning gym time, I feel motivated to go because I love seeing myself going up on weight levels as it’s a visual representation of my own dedication, and the endorphin rush from it breaks through my moods. I also have a chronic pain condition called AMPS and exercise is the primary treatment for it, so exercise literally stops severe, debilitating pain and now I can walk with a cane instead of being in a wheelchair full time. I can’t do medical keto because some of my other chronic physical conditions require a specific diet that my doctors already work on, but I’m really glad I can still metabolically help my body through exercise. To anyone just starting out with exercise after a period of not doing anything, or even starting for the very first time - just know a stranger on the internet believes in you and thinks you’re fucking awesome. And if working out isn’t a possibility for you, be that because of a disability, lack of resources, lack of time, or something else, I hope you don’t beat yourself up over it and I wish you the best for your mental and physical health no matter what

At the start of the year, I noticed a gym in my area was having a deal for one month free. I decided to join the gym on the last day of January and have been going 5x a week since February and I’ve found this routine to be incredibly impactful on my mental health. Pairing regular exercise with a ketogenic diet has me dealing with less severe mood swings and not as deep depression. I started building towards this gym goal by walking 15 minutes 5 times a week, whether I felt like it or not and building from there for 8 weeks. It was incredibly hard…but seeing the improvements has helped me so much.

I have basically drug induced, trauma, stress etc induced more disorganized, cognitive domain schizotypal/schizoaffective issues from college years ago…my fault. In the last 8ish years I have more or less put my schiz issues into remission with excersise. It is a daily battle and my mental health can seriously decline if I don’t do it. It’s just the reality I live with now. But Chris is right, it’s not quite remission because I still don’t do the things I’d like to. But diet itself is also not quite remission either. I know the industry of psychiatry is developing better more effective medicines but knowing and reading about the complexities of excersise on the legs, body and mind I don’t see science being able to conquer the “excersise in a pill thing” ever really. The issues are JUST too complicated. We all need better answers to these complex problems

Does anyone else find that exercise worsens their mental health? Idk what's wrong with me, but whenever I do any type of physical activity, I get super depressed during the workout and I remain irritable and tired throughout the rest of the day. I also struggle to get up the next day because I'm even more tired than usual. And it's not because I'm pushing my body too far, even something as simple as taking a walk puts me in a really bad mood.

@@visionvixxenGood call on the blood sugar. It could be the explanation. Although, it could be more complicated than that and probably actually is assuming that there is a multifaceted metabolic problem at the heart of the patient's issues. The body does a lot of complicated chemistry. It can use L-tryptophan whenever it needs to manufacture either serotonin or lactic acid. The tryptophan could be the link, since the brain needs serotonin (which also helps regulate digestion - sugars), and the body needs lactic acid to recover from exercise. Therefore, I'm betting that supplementing with tryptophan would do wonders for our patient. Anyone on prescription antidepressants should exercise caution with tryptophan, due to the fact that it will increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.

I've been severly depressed for a very long period of time and during it I stopped exercising and almost all activity as well. Few months ago my place of treatment got moved further away from where I live and I have to walk 3 km to get there and then back. And even though it is just walking it has helped quite a lot with being a little bit more active and it has made going to some other places a little bit easier as well. So I feel like I will try to increase how much I move slowly. It is still takes a lot for me to do that and I struggle keeping up routines but at this point any help I get is welcome.

Start small. Five minutes of stretching before your morning coffee, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, stuff like that adds up and is much easier to implement and stick to than a full gym session or yoga class. Once you get that stuff worked in it’s easier to add more in. Accountability could be a huge help too, make plans with a friend that will not let you bail. I practice karate and if i miss class i will hear about it! Some days I just don’t feel like it and I will skip but then everyone checks up on me so it’s sometimes less effort just to do the class than it is to skip.

I exercise everyday. I incorporate strength training, HIIT, boxing, and speed walking into my workout program. Unequivocally, the most important part of any part of any aspect of life is proper breathing. Always concentrate on your breathing. Practice diaphragmatic breathing until you do it naturally. It is the best mental and physical resource you have in your arsenal. And air is free ( at least for now). 😮 My physical therapist helped retrain me how to properly breath. Since learning new breathing techniques in April 2024: I an currently walking a mile in 13min 44 secs. Before I started, my mile was 16min, 25 sec. All of my compound weight exercises have increased by at least 35 pounds. My anxiety level and brain fog are improving.

I have POTS and I got some exercise pedals for 150 - 200 dollars. They look like bike pedals without the bike. You stick them in front of a chair or the sofa. This way you can pedal while sitting down. It really helps to exercise while sitting when you have POTS. I started with 5 minutes. I am now up to 12 minutes. You have to increase very slowly or POTS will make you feel sick. Other sit down exercise will also work.

Sure, I my mental health is only affected by chronic depression, thus I cannot speak for other mental disorders, but if I try to go for just 10 minutes to a high intensity exercise, I can tell, that I will be burned out for days and in a very negative headspace. or me doing creative things is much more helpful when it comes to dealing with my depression.

Totally get this. I’ve been in a similar space for the past few years, mostly to do with burnout and chronic fatigue. I have to be careful about checking in with my energy levels and say, “can I expend an hour on a workout, or do I need to apply that limited energy to something else that requires my cognitive focus.” I find that a mix of walking, yoga, Pilates, and strength training tend to be my sweet spot when they are available to me, but it took awhile to work back up to that. Running and HIIT are absolute no gos for me, as they are too depleting.

While i did feel great during or shortly after the exercise, i would feel like absolute crap a few hours as well as 2-3 Days afterwards, physically as well as mentally and cognitively. Especially if i am already stressed out by my daily life, a more intense exercise seems to be stressing me out even more. i suspect i might have developed some form of overtraining syndrome over the years.

Working full time is already hard enough, and on most days all I can do after work is lie in bed. Whenever I force myself to exercise, I get so depressed and overwhelmed because I'm basically trying to spend energy I didn't have in the first place. I think that situation is not talked about enough.

A 40+ mile bike ride is the only thing that even helps a little(PDD w/psychotic features and GAD) and it is very temporary. I never understood the significant difference of my diagnosis and schizoeffective disorder. The symptoms are nearly identical and the treatment is identical. Of course, the label that they want to slap on me is meaningless. They can't objectively prove that I have any MH disorder so it is the symptoms that matter. I recently fired my shrink over her misapplication of my symptoms to a meaningless label - she laughably thought I was bipolar when I am depressed 24/7, except for maybe an hour or two during and after bike rides.

Lauren I’m so curious how to stay thin without ADD meds. I run 6 miles a day and used to do more- eat clean etc. but also crave at times…. People think I’m so healthy but I have to be…. I’ve been treated for bipolar 2 add and ASD but whenever it gets to anything beyond Lamictal I won’t do. I already have too many issues with lethargy and no motivation- also and it gets way worse w a couple extra lbs on my five foot body w asthma. My psychiatrist keeps pushing Vraylar and it ther stuff and I’m already messed up from what I take and don’t want to risk metabolic syndrome, Acasia are already a prompt with that sorry about the spelling, but I’m exercising right now. I absolutely cannot have tired of dyskinesia ever. My life is hard enough that even if it stayed the way it is I’m not sure any minor benefits gained by a new med would ever be worse like the problems I could result with education that makes it really hard. I went off for Prozac and just Vance and I could actually go back to medical school but it’s just so hard. I don’t know you done keto. I’ve never been able to do that and maybe that’s part of the problem but did partial and no one could send me, I was thin though and I like that, but I’m just wondering whether options your real experience with these meds and other options to stay in and healthy on top of that if you already eat very clean do at least an hour of cardio and weights. try your best to get sleep and keep it stress-free like the tipping point is working for me. I can’t and I’ve done it and it becomes really bad news so just wondering I’ve been wondering, honestly about Metformin mounjaro to etc… I hate that we have to think about all this stuff like they also have their issues and everybody is different, but I still haven’t found a way to regulate my energy and intervening to be stable enough to go back into the outside world and part of that is really part of that maybe the ADD or autistic Noor diversity and I’m still trying to figure it out DVRST. Neurodiversity!!!

9:22 If someone tells me that excersice is good for my mental health, they have to ask me what I like doing. 🙌 Otherwise I will probably be grumpy and say no. EDIT: I agree with you that it's good to do excersice that we like. 😀

YES imperative… but sometimes you start beeding all sorts of stimulants to even bother- or even wine- like your chemistry or something is so off-- and nothing you can do to jumpstart. This is when I KNOW I’m going to the point of no return- I will do anything to get a walk or run in but sometimes it doesn’t happen. Also injuries- and not being able to switch to an effective form of workout without the right motivator or trainer. There could be a very high energy of activation necessary when your not healthy or motivated and etc-

I found that I have to gamify my workout experiences to keep my attention. Seeing improving statistics, beating a time goal on a walk, lifting heavier with great music is enough to keep my attention. Had to build up towards it though. I could only eek out 15 mins and it felt like pulling out teeth 😂. I wonder if having gamified community or competition would keep you interested?

You just need to find your people. There must be some physical activity clubs at school you could join. Or look out in the community. I practice karate and the accountability is a great motivator. If I’m not in class I hear about it from everyone. Use the ADHD to your advantage and find something you can hyperfocus on.
