Qatar 2022 | I have always been fascinated by the World Cup Curse phenomenon, and today, I will look at it's deep history, and connect it with the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. With France being the defending champions, all eyes are on them, will they surpass the group stage, or will the fall to the curse like their fellow Frenchman in 2002, 20 years earlier.

My theory is a factor of 3 things: 1st: The "hunger" to win the WC is not there to the same extent as the previous year. Not saying it is not there, but definitely it is not the same. 2nd: They become the targeted team. Everyone will study how they play and how to counter them. 3rd: they tend to play the same way as the previous WC, instead of changing or evolving their playstile to stay competitive I will argue that brazil also had the curse in 2006, but the team was so stacked that they just brute forced passed opponents. they loosing where they did was certainly underachieving for that team
@mattwong7191

This makes sense to me too. 1. Makes sense, especially if you have a bunch of players from the previous winning squad. If you have younger guys who weren't there, then I could see the hunger returning. It's kind of wild that Mbappe is still so young - I wonder if he cares about winning it again. Back-to-back wins would be one of the history books. 2. Because of the "curse" I can't see teams concentrating on them more than they would for any other difficult opponent. Still, you're right in that there is probably a ton of footage not just of the national team playing but also the individual players who play in big leagues. 3. Same coach, same players, so yes, I could see things more or less staying the same. Compounded with #2, that might lead to their downfall. The German 2018 team definitely seemed to fall into that trap - they looked so uninspired and dull, coach and players. I'm rooting for France but it will be interesting to see a new winner this year anyway, especially if it's a team people aren't expecting.

World Champion teams usually comprise of the key players involved in the previous wc win. This causes the avg age of the team to be higher which isn't an advantage other than experience.

Yes its also that pride after winning last World Cup have had curse on you, that when you won last World Cup. Of course you should be then able to get through the group, but thats not the case always. In Champions League worse teams can also beat big teams sometimes, so I dont see that its not possible in the World Cup then. I hope Denmark and Tunisia can get it through and Australia be troll, like south-korea against Germany in last World Cup. Its that France team now lacks Kante, that is really good defensive mid-fielder to help their team to defend propelly and Pogba who is really solid good mid-fielder who could help the team, so France maybe does not go through, if Mbappe is there to play selfish shots who miss the goal, when he could have passed, like he does with PSG. I didnt see Lloris in the goal in this team, so now other teams have better chance to score against France. Its weird that France use Giroud in the team, if there is thre strikers that are better, than him who are Mbappe, Benzema and Griezmann and France does not have then proper wingers, when have Dembele, but im not sure are they going to use him, so if it goes down to the Tunisia France game with does France go through. Im going to turn up to watch that game to enjoy it, when I was not there to enjoy south-korea-Germany, while I heard about it immediately. I also planned to watch Germany-Spain and Argetina-Poland game, when their then teams that will both give tough challenge each other, when other group stage games I just preatty much know which one is going to win with the better team. I still hope Argetina wins the World Cup, when that would be epic ending to Messi football career.

I think they also become reliant on the old players who won the World Cup for them last time, without realising that those players are old and not as good anymore. Also younger players in those positions don’t get experience as they’re kept out by the older ones. The same thing also sometimes kind of happens to runners-up, not just winners. Argentina underperformed in 2018, as did France in 2010. I don’t imagine Croatia will be that great in 2022 either.
@brutanedda3107
@brutanedda3107 Жыл бұрын
That's probably right, Italy is particularly sensible to this as, after 2006, this time after they won Euro 2020 they looked so out of shape even for the qualifiers, without even making it for the World Cup, which is so embarassing. France didn't look that good in these last national encounters in Nations League. Something that could paradoxically save France this year are the injuries. Most players that won in 2018 are not gonna be starting this year, the team is almost completely renovated with some of the best young talents of 2021/22. Instead of Pogba and Kante, we would most likely have Camavinga and Tchouameni, that already play in Real with Benzema and so we can presume they already have profound chemistry between them, and Deschamps should not underestimate this aspect. Of course, experience is good, but I think he should risk it a bit and exploit the work Ancelotti put on making these guys work so well together in Madrid, without overfocusing on household names like an out of shape Pogba, Mbappe, or Griezmann. What's great about Madrid guys is that for a certain extent they look like they're able to manage themselves, and so Deschamps shouldn't be discouraged to put Benzema at the center of his project instead of bad attitude Mbappe, Benzema is way more suited to enstablish good morale and hunger to players that weren't present in 2018 to start a new legacy, and potentially save Deschamps job, who, if he gets eliminated at group stage, would most definitely request demission.

Even Brazil performed very badly in 2006 when you look at their squad. They probably had one of the best, if not the best, squads in their history. The so-called magic quartet with Kaka, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Adriano. They had 3 Ballon d'Or winners, yet they barely made it to the quarterfinals. Edit: After reading some of the comments, I see I may have overstated my case. Brazil may not have had that bad of a time in 2006.

But this is a brazilian thing, not WC curse. As a brazilian, our best squad ever was 82 and it got humiliated by Italy. In 94 we barely managed to qualify to the WC and won it all. That's why it makes Spain, winning Euro 2008, South Africa 2010 and Euro 2012 back to back to back sooo exceptional, sure they were eliminated at group stage in Brazil 2014 but Xavi and Iniesta dominated international football like only Pelé and Garrincha, Maradona or Zidane did back time. Pretty much the same team for these 4 years, just midfielders added on the already talent packed department; THAT Spain is most probably the greatest national team of modern football. There's nothing like a curse . It's a mentality thing , once you achieve massive greatness , it's natural to Loose that hunger to do it all over again! I remember Low ( ex German manager) talking something similar too! Second reason is massive pressure and expectations from the world and media. The media keeps hyping the defending champions as favourites , it's obvious to choke under pressure as a team no matter how good you are ! Usually the Teams mentality when they are trying to win the World Cup for the first time is " We will try our best to win this and let's see how far it takes us!,we will take this world Cup game by game" And then the next world cup when your defending your title it's like " We got to win this no matter what!" When your super desperate and just thinking about defending your title, it's really natural to forget your basics and mess it all up in the group stage.
@nahuelcosta5609
@nahuelcosta5609 Жыл бұрын
Mentality yes, but for another reason: put yourself in the shoes of one world cup player, you are playing against Australia and the most recent champion in your group. What will be the match you are giving it ALL to win ? You just can't assume your loss against the recent champ because 1 match can leave you out of the tournament.

It’s somehow also linked with having the same coach that these teams won the previous world cup with. Like everyone can predict how the team will play what tactics would the coach would use since it’s a big competition these coaches don’t experiment they stick with their proved tactics and this is where the other teams in the group predicts and counters them viciously. Also the pressure to live up to the high expectations that these nations people has towards their national team that comes as the current defending champions of the world. Its more for a tactics flaw and pressure than a curse.

I think a large contributor is "the underdog effect". Almost every country at a world cup plays away games and there are always large amounts of neutral fans at the stadiums. It is common for a neutral viewer to cheer for the underdog, thus the previous champions will naturally have little support from the audience. It's probably not the whole explanation, but I think it contributes to the "curse".

Very nice video, please don't hesitate to share your theories, it's totally fine to be wrong !

Depends on what you mean by 'curse'. If it's getting knocked out in the group stages, no, I think they'll buck that trend. However, can't see them going too far. I said the same just before the Euros; it might have been Nations League form that tipped me off, I'm not sure. But had a feeling they'd bottle it somewhere and think the same may happen here. But, who knows, maybe I end up wrong? They got the strongest overall squad in the competition again. I'd say they've probably had the most squad depth as far back as 2016 tbh, even before Mbappe came into the fold. So, who knows, maybe they put the Euros behind them and come back stronger? I just personally don't see it myself. Think that we may be looking at Brazil and Argentina both making a rampant return!

I cannot answer for Germany, Spain and Italy but I can tell you what the French players said in interviews years later. 1) They took a whole new dimension after winning and they were forced into marketing campaigns very disruptive for the preparation (virtually no preparation and few helpful friendlies played 2) They were all coming from very long seasons in club (true for other team but a team of stars will be more likely to have exhausting seasons 3)The level of expectation was insane 4) They flew in Senegal a few days before the world cup (when many squads were there for weeks) and didn’t have time to acclimate to the weather. They all knew it was going to be an absolute disaster, they were not in shape. They were exhausted and slow.

I think Australia and Tunisia are going to be stronger than people think for one big reason, climate. Both are warmer countries, and the Aussies played their last two qualifiers in Qatar. Of course, the other thing in their favour is that nobody expects them to win. Don't be surprised if the Aussies ambush the French with a draw in their first game.

A couple key things you missed was the original curse started with Brazil in 1966. France won the Euro in 2000. Germany was expected to get out of their group in 2018 due to winning the confederations cup back in 2017 with their C team going against top teams. France current team problems could hinder their progression in the World Cup. Injuries, team controversies (mbappe curse, team beefs etc) and some players not playing well (Pavard, Varane, etc.)

Ok. There's one thing we forgot to mention. And that's the sheer honour in beating a current world champion..These matches usually bring out the best in so-called underdogs who are determined to put a stamp on the proceedings for posterity. The entire Senegalese nation waited with baited breath, unbridled passion and expectation for the opener against France in 2002. So did the players and so did Cameroon in 1990 vs Argentina. The Netherlands and Mexico arguably had their most daring performances against Spain and Germany respectively in 2014 and 2018....Although both failed to really impress in subsequent games... It's no coincidence. But in this instance 😄😄😄😄😄😄 I see very little in the opposition. France should go thru albeit perhaps with some struggle.

Despise people not liking to admit it, football is a game where a lot of luck comes into play. Injuries, lucky shots, inspired plays, arbitration, etc.. To win you got not only to be good, but also a bit lucky. As it turns out, there is this concept about return to the mean. When a team has a superb results in a season, even though it is on pair in quality with it's opponents, chances are that next season they are going to have a more average one, at least average for their own standard. For a national team to win two world cups in a row, not only they need to keep their strength for 4 years, but also be significantly better than the other teams. Either way, be it extreme luck or indeed being that much better, it would be a once in a lifetime achievement. Even though France has a very good chance of doing that, it needs to be very luck to win against England and the finalist that will defeat Brazil, Netherlands, Argentina, Portugal or whoever defeats them. Every single national team lost to an unexpected opponent (with Brazil at least having the excuse of playing with it's B team), so everything can happen in the pitch.

There are two sides to the so-called curse, one a scientific side, the other a random side, but mostly it is scientific. The one thing in common with the past few champions, with the notable exception of Brasil, was the qualification process. France 2002 qualified automatically - being the last defending champion that were allowed to do so, whereas Brasil 2006 qualified through a highly competitive round robin of all the teams in South America, but the rest qualified through a comparatively easy format of topping (or potentially even coming second) a group of 5 to 6 European teams of mixed level. This means France 2002 was untested throughout the qualification process, despite they won the Euro 2000 (not without some bit of luck but it's mostly their quality). They were reduced to playing friendlies in that two years gap when most people were playing competitive football internationally. The outcome is that they had much less opportunity in the constantly evolving world to test any new issues arising, and that the confidence they built in the process is not as solid as the outcome says it should be. With Brazil 2006 however, they don't get to qualify if they fall short of their neighbours who were all very competitive. Just look at how that Chilean team that dominated South American football for a few years of the mid-2010s fall short of Peru, twice. Chile was on the same points as 5th placed Peru in 2018 (26 pts), followed by Paraguay who's 2 points short of both teams), and in 2022, Peru sits 5th with 24 points and Chile was 7th on 19 points. So to beat out the competition in the South American round is obviously not as easy (4.5 places out of 10 teams) as it may seem. When it comes to the Europeans in the 2010s, something similar happened, for they were mostly drawn in weaker groups. Most notably, Germany 2018 won all 10 of their qualification games which was sandwiched with a 2017 Confederations Cup victory. While it is understandable for expert journalists to interpret their qualification results as their continued dominance, it should be noted that the second best team in the group was North Ireland. They won the group not because they were very good, but because their oppositions were just too bad, that they couldn't even test the Germans who were in decline. These are very similar situations that happened to Italy and Spain too, in their respective exits. While this set the stage for their failure, there's also random factors that I mentioned. For instances Zidane's injury in 2002, their collective success in hitting the woodwork more than the number of goals conceded and of course, Thierry Henry's red card in the second game. The 2018 German coach was himself a random factor too, when he was over confident in pushing his full backs forward in the first game, leaving just 2, plus a keeper behind for the Mexican to score. All these, with the fact that the margin between the world's top 25 teams were just much smaller than before the 2000s, made the defending champion more susceptible to be out competed by the next World Cup comes (I mean look at how Italy narrowly escaped a loss against New Zealand). Whether France 2022 will repeat the same? Not necessarily, but they really didn't do too well recently and Denmark was really a stable performer in the past year, while Australia beat Peru in the play-offs. The danger is certain not small but I would say they should be able to cope with it.

It has probably something to do with the average age of those teams and managers just not bringing in enough youth in the squads in time. Mostly because they are the reigning champions and it went well last tournament, right? So why change things to rigorously. Like every team, with time it becomes sour and they can't compete anymore.
