I scored a free pair of snowshoes and since my splitboard broke last month, I decided to see how they stack up again Alex Strohl and Matt Tufts skiing up Big Mtn. Will I become a snowshoe convert and give up split boarding?

Just my 2 cents. I've done a lot of snowshoeing up big mountains in Colorado and loved every time. I don't remember any blisters so it is doable without pain. On packed trails snowshoes are still faster than boots. I think skinning vs snowshoes speed wise is relative to the individual. Especially in deep pow. I will try split board this winter,.. I think. But for the most part if you have a light board and light snowshoes (I use MSR Denali's), and a good pack for board carry, it is a fun adventure. One tip for blisters is to change your socks when things heat up. Changing from snowshoes to board is fast so spend the extra time to change socks. Ok off my rocker. I'm excited for another winter!

Great video. I've been hiking up an 800 meter slope about 2 times a week, a couple of times a trip, in my snowboard boots. It's getting old. Soon they will open the ski lifts, but I need alternatives because I love off-piste boarding. Thanks for suffering for our sake. I look forward to watching your videos. Stay safe but have a dangerously fun time!

Keep getting out and making your videos. Definitely an inspiration for backyard adventures....although your backyard is certainly better than most.

Just did a really fun snowshoe hike from tumalo mountain to moon mountain here in bend oregon. 10 mile round trip, huge broken blister on left heel but, i was able to board down the face of moon mountain and it was awesome. Love your vids bro 🤙

Always love the videos mate. Would love to do some of the things you get up to, but living in Queensland, Australia it’s pretty hard haha. But watching your videos helps a fair bit 🤙🏼

If you're looking for snowshoes to sub for a splitboard, I'd recommend getting snowshoes with a riser bar and metal side edges that dig into the snow. Most snowshoes are designed for mild hills not steeper terrain ascents. MSR makes the best ones for that purpose (Evo Ascents for packed stuff, you can buy tail extensions for extra float). Snowshoes aren't too risky to buy used and you can always resell down the road if you buy them new.

have had a very similar experience in snowshoes however i do agree there is nothing better than getting out there even if you don't have the best gear available

when using snowshoes, do you have your snowboardboots completely loosened? or are they tight on the bottom? i just got snowshoes and plan to use them this winter
@IsaacJohnston
@IsaacJohnston 3 жыл бұрын
I had them mostly loosened but the liners are not fully loose. As loose as I can make them but still holding my feet without slippage if that makes sense.

I’ve been snowboarding the past 20 years and last year moved to a mountain town where I have the chance to do uphill with friends that skin / alpine ski. I was considering switching to a splitboard setup, and was wondering: given the choice, do you prefer a splitboard for uphill, or was having your regular snowboard + the snowshoes better? I’ve been making do with my current setup (just hiking up in snowboard boots), but ready for an upgrade!

Try Drifts or Union Rovers for uphill, much better than snowshoes...

High Quality Snowshoes (300$~) are worth it but don't buy cheap ones. With good Snowshoes you don't have to lift your feet and it's way faster once you're used to it.

Cool! how well does your snowboard shoes fit the snowshoes? They always look a bit narrow online for normal hiking boots.

My boots are very wide but fit perfect in the snowshoes.

I think of snowshoeing as walking on unpacked snow (the deeper the better) with big traditional-design snowshoes. It gives a sense of freedom and adventure that you don't get if confined to a trail. Often on packed trails, you don't even need snowshoes. When I go out, I'll walk on unpacked snow, switching to a packed trail when I get tired, then back to the fluffy stuff as soon as I'm rested enough. I recently took a woman out with me (she's athletic) for her first time snowshoeing. She enjoyed the unpacked stuff more.

I did the same on a very steep slope in the wood. 3h30 hike in snowshoe. This was my first time. I was so tired that I was afraid to be unable to ride my snowboard lol. In the end every thing was great.

Any thoughts on mentioning the actual danger of backcountry? We’ve got a historical high in avalanche this year, that skipped your mind?
