Will Gen Z Own A Home? Housing Affordability In The Spotlight For The Election!
*[Housing Affordability: A Key Election Issue]*
Younger people in the U.S. are so frustrated by the real estate market that housing affordability has become the top issue influencing their vote in this November’s election, according to a new survey by Redfin. Record-high home prices, elevated mortgage rates, and expensive rents have made housing affordability a key election issue for younger voters.
For Generation Z, currently aged 18 to 27, housing affordability ranks as the most important issue. This sentiment is echoed as home prices continue to soar. The median home sale price in the U.S. at the end of May was $390,613, an all-time high according to Redfin data.
*[Charlotte Real Estate Trends]*
Now, let's zoom in on Charlotte, NC, and see what's happening in our local market. The median home price in Charlotte was $432K in April 2024, flat year-over-year, with homes selling for approximately the asking price on average. Despite being a seller's market, there are signs of change with increased housing supply in some Southern regions
In neighborhoods like South Park and Plaza Midwood, we're seeing significant interest and investment due to their blend of luxury, amenities, and vibrant community life. Meanwhile, areas like Belmont and Ballantyne offer growth potential and family-friendly environments, attracting a wide range of buyers and investors
Nationally, housing affordability is crucial because, despite a strong economy, buying a home feels impossible for many Americans. This is particularly true for young people, who have seen the cost of starter homes increase twice as fast as incomes. About 12% of Gen Z respondents believe they will never own a house, a stark contrast to the American dream of homeownership
In response to these challenges, President Joe Biden's administration is proposing a $10,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers. This initiative aims to make homeownership more accessible and alleviate some of the financial burdens that young buyers face.
As we approach the elections, it's clear that the real estate market and housing affordability will be pivotal issues, especially for younger generations. Whether you're in Charlotte or anywhere else in the U.S., these trends are shaping our future.
