If they have composting toilets and solar they do not need to worry about sewer lines or any utility bills for that matter! This just shows that the state we call the aloha state only cares about how much money they can make off of the people who live here and have not heart for anyone else

We need movers and shakers as leaders to expedite this process. This is an emergency. People can’t be tossed out on the streets. But the leadership here is going to give all kinds of excuses. They’re heartless.

I'm not familiar with Oahu but I do know that on the Big Island you can have unpermitted structures under 600 sq ft. There's tons of people living off the grid there.

Fascinating when I look up Hawaii tiny home project I find this from 2 years ago we are now in 2018 and Hawaii is having a devastating Blow from lava flow. Now to help people move out of the shelters they will be accommodating the residents with tiny homes, 10 x 12 storage units designed to be homes bathrooms and kitchens included. Whether the tiny homes were a trend or not whether they were a choice or not this is what the residence will have after their homes have been destroyed by lava. 🤔

@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom No one wants their homes destroyed regardless of how big or small. It's a concern, I get it. But some of these homes are on wheels which is a better alternative to a stationary house that receives only risk.

In puna myself and a bunch of contractors voluntarily built many 12x12 structures along with the help of the national guard for displaced citizens over in pahoa, hpp and hilo. I myself would love to build a tiny home as the price of buying a house is getting way to high. Being a native Hawaiian and displaced twice in my lifetime from places i grew up at both from lava is a hard thing because those places are but a mere memory and can only be talked about now.

Hawaii is the most expensive state to live in. This video from 3 years ago is convenient for families who cant afford million dollar homes but this sure can help those first time home buyers. They should implement this already

My dream is to get a self sustainable modular home and plop it on a small parcel in upcountry. Be completely off grid, no sewer, solar panels and use the wind for power. 😊

My 1-bedroom apartment in Manhattan was less than 300 sq.ft.! My partner and I were fine living in it. We would love to live in a tiny home on O'ahu...we can make it an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The weather is much better than NYC's.

It is a good idea to have these tiny homes because there is a lack of available land to construct houses or appartments on Oahu. Plus, these homes would help the homeless people transition into a safe shelter.

@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom True, but for Ohana families (the ones who have children and then grandchildren and already own land) it can be huge. Your adult kids can put one of these homes up on land you already own. It still would help lots of families.

Depends on the family and their lifestyle... For most of human history people have actually lived predominantly in small structures... Western cultures only got into big houses as the norm in the last 60+ years. Prior to the 1950's the average household size nationally was less than 900 sq ft and you can still find old houses across the country that are either small or tiny... Go back further in time and the average was even smaller... Abraham Lincoln grew up in a cabin that was only 288 Sq Ft... While, if you go to other nations you may be shocked because the big trend didn't take off in many other parts of the world... Like in Hong Kong the average new house is only about 484 Sq Ft and they have apartments down to 129 Sq Ft and soon 100 Sq Ft. The key difference is how much time people spend indoors... For Americans, the average is 87% of our life is spent indoors, another 6% in an automobile of one sort or another, and only 7% outdoors... Add, fewer people live under the same roof now than they did prior to the 1950's and of course it seems people need a lot more space in their house because their house has become their world... People who live most of their life outdoors, though, and don't mind sharing space with family... They need only a fraction of the space because their house is not their whole world and there's no more greater elbow room than the world when you live most of your life outdoors...

The problem is not only zoning but whether or not you have to be on the grid. Hooked up to the water, gas or sewer line.
