Buying a car in Ecuador was a lot easier than I expected. I bought a new SouEas SUV with a 1.5 ltr Mitsubishi motor, 5-Spd manual transmission, sun roof, full leather package, navigation, and more for only $19,100.00.
Registration and a years worth of insurance is around $900.

Don, I’m really excited for you, and am very interested in how you like being a car owner in Ecuador. I can’t imagine having to schedule drivers for all my trips, whether to the grocery store or to another town. Can’t wait to see your new wheels!!!!

Put a dash camera to record your traveling adventures. Also good to use for any future traffic disputes you may have.

Thanks! This is the video I've been waiting for. It wouldn't be a car I'd be interested in, it would be a motorcycle but, I figure the process would be about the same. I have 10 motorcycles and a truck (my truck is a 1988 Mitsubishi, no problems). I'm on a motorcycle 99.999% of the time, rain, snow, ice, I'm still on a motorcycle. I'm a Honda guy here in the US but, I'm not going to pay the Ecuador price for a Honda when I think I can get a good Chinese bike so much cheaper. I don't know about cars but, motorcycles are a big percent made in China no matter what brand you buy. I'd be looking at the Loncin 300 Rally. Loncin is connected to Kawasaki and they say that engine is pretty much a KLX300 engine (KLX300 is made in Thailand). Loncin is sending them to Europe as a Voge 300 Rally and people are comparing them to the Honda CRF300 (that Honda is made in Thailand). They're close. I see new ones in Ecuador for $3,250. China made stuff is getting a lot better, no doubt about that and the better brands can compare with anybody. I bet you're going to be pleased with your new car.

@@elgringoec I've never been to Ecuador, hoping to go this year maybe not come back. If I'm living there, I know I wouldn't be allowed to ship a vehicle there. I've gotten old and the Honda I ride most is a 250 Nighthawk. It's just easy and since I don't ride freeways, it has no trouble keeping up with traffic. In Ecuador, I was thinking to start looking in Olon (coast). Looking at the Google maps travel times, it looks like a 18hp bike would be more than enough on the beach road E15. I was looking at the 150 to 250 China bikes that use Honda CG design (pushrods), not much power but the CG was designed to last under brutal conditions with low, low maintenance. Then somebody posted on one of the Ecuador Expat pages that Itchy Boots was in Ecuador. Then I wanted to do the hills, mountains and dirt roads. The Loncin 300 Rally specs out at 29hp, 18.5 ft/lbs of torque, water cooled, 18 rear, 21 front, gobs of travel and ground clearance, in short, it does compare with the small ADV bikes. Ecuador has a trade deal with China and the Loncin 300 Rally is quite a bit cheaper in Ecuador than the Voge is in Europe. A Ecuador Honda XRE300 is over $9000, much higher than the CRF300 where you can get one and getting close to 3 times the price of the Loncin. Sorry to ramble on but, I'm an old man that loves motorcycles.

Don, hear hear! Even though I knew this was in the works, now that you have made your purchase, I'm very happy to hear it. I take vicarious pleasure from this because as you know, this is about much more than the acquisition of a car. This development represents the potential of a whole new way of life - and an opportunity to get acquainted with aspects of Ecuador you have not seen heretofore. And, yes, this was largely the whole point to begin with. One thing now occurs to me - are you concerned that once the news gets out in Manta, people will pester you to death to play "taxi" and give them rides? I know you like to help people now and then, just as, in turn, you appreciate the help people give to you. Still, I hope people don't overdo it.

We have an Ambacar Haval that we have been happy with. We had some problems with the cambio de cajas (gear stick shifter) early on. Eventually, they figured it out and fixed it. Otherwise, no problems. We bought the car 4 years ago May. We drive it alot. Many trips from Riobamba to Quito and Guayaquil too. It's the nicest car I've ever owned. It's a pretty good sized SUV, leather seats, electric driver seat. I don't like how the electric window operates. Also, the 1st gear is geared too high. We live in the campo and on short steep hills, it's a problem. But Otherwise, I love the car. We are getting the clutch replaced next week. That will cost about $400 parts, labor and all. Can't imagine that cost in the US. The car was about $26k as I recall. I think you will be happy with your purchase Don. My understanding is that these cars are assembled in Ambato Ecuador.

That is a good deal you got.. AMBACAR has good after sales service.. One thing your fellow Americans or maybe you may not know is that in Ecuador insurance is full coverage.. In the US you pay more than in Ecuador just for liability.. also with your matricula you have SPPAT which is a liability that everyone on the road must have..

Not criticizing: I’ve seen all the crazy Chinese cars here and heard from the taxi drivers that there are models to avoid. They like the Nissans Chevy’s and Toyotas. You did your checking and bought smart. I wonder though, give the size of the car, a 1.5L engine? I wonder how that’s going to climb the mountain roads.

Real leather Don or leather like as they do in couches? There is a difference and it’s hard to tell. Less entropic gadgets the less that breaks and the lighter the vehicle for mpg. Congrats!

Chinese cars are very well made. I have had a Chery Tiggo 3 and a Haval H6 Sport for the last 4 years. No issues. North American mindset that it must be the big three to be good……crap. Best of luck with your new wheels….someday we will meet along the road……

Not that I know of. I'm sure it's going to be fairly reasonable because of it's size and the fact it's a five speed manual transmission.

From what I found online 31 to 35 mpg. Gas is $2.40 a gallon in Ecuador. The DX3 looks like a really good vehicle from what I'm seeing, made since at least 2016 so, they've been making them a while.

@@jerrym3261 I think I made a good choice. In a lot of the Chinese cars I looked at, I saw a lot of inferior quality but this guy is solid and I've heard no bad news about this brand. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
