Can I clean my self healing cutting mat with an eraser?
I have a smaller self healing cutting mat that I use when I need to cut batting or felt. I prefer a separate cutting mat for these because the batting fibers tend to get stuck in the cutting grooves. With the fibers stuck in the cutting grooves the mat cannot heal itself.
I've read on a few blogs that you can use a pink eraser or a white one from Dollar Tree to clean the fibers out of your mat. I could not find a pink eraser but I did buy a white one and a few other erasers to test out. Come on in and see if they work.
If you would like to send some friend mail I now have a PO Box. Thank you for your generosity.

Do you have a cutting mat that's full of batting fibers? I heard you can clean them with a simple eraser. Did it work? Come on in and find out.

The pink eraser you spoke of is called a Pink Pearl and can be purchased from an office supply store. Do not confuse Pink Pearl with the pink erasers you buy from Wal-Mart - they look the same but aren't. ALSO using a sharp blade in your rotary cutter helps to prevent fabric from getting pushed into the mat.

I lightly scrape the mat with a credit card, plastic putty knife, or a disposable razor on the cross & the bias first. Then a gum eraser, but use the broadest side--not the end--to make it go quicker. Carpet tape--ultra sticky double sided tape--press it down & jerk up (like we used masking tape to de-lint those navy blazers 😁). Lint rollers for light fuzz. Good vid darlin.

I used to write fan fiction and I was so careful not to read other stories so I didn't copy anyone else's ideas, but you know quite often, different people come up with the same idea. The edge of something in hard plastic works good too. I like this eraser option as well so will try it out and put it to the test. When cutting batting just turn your mat over and use your ruler as ur cutting guide. Clean when done. Your issues won't ever build like that again. I have a large green olfa mat I purchased in 89. It has a couple deep grooves from cutting in the same areas over n over but is still super nice. I will try the eraser n see if I can heal it. Awesome video, tfs... Barb from AZ

Chicka D With this small mat I didn’t care too much because I have my main mat. I didn’t want to flip my big mat because it’s reversible. I used one side until that side wore down in areas and now i use the other side. I still use the first side for smaller cuts like 6” blocks because the four corners are still in good shape. Wow, your mat has lasted you well. I think the Olfa mats are a bit sturdier than the Fiskars mats.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but I have been using an artist’s gum eraser, then when it is mostly clean, I go over it with a damp mr eraser. It isn’t good for the part one of the cleaning, but is perfect for follow up. This has been working pretty well for me. However it is important to allow the mat to fully dry before using it again. Not sure why, but that softer gum eraser has, so far worked best. It will get used up faster, because it is so soft, but with cost of those mats, I am willing to spend a little more to keep it clean.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I think you're right. The softer erasers seem to work better for some reason and that's not something I expected. I did notice that Mr. Clean works well as a clean up tool. He just crumbles and doesn't pull the bits out but he does a good job getting the leftover bits. I agree, a little work and the cost of an eraser is much cheaper than a new mat.

That's a lesson we all learn the hard way lol. I do tend to be a pack rat so I have all my old cutting mats. I read on a blog many years ago that cutting mats can be used for other crafts. I use my old one all the time. I was using this small one for cutting batting so that I didn't "ruin" my good mat. You may scream again but did you know that many cutting mat companies will replace your old mat under certain conditions? My Fiskars mat apparently had a lifetime warranty. I didn't know about that but one of my viewers told me. I had a couple places where the mat had lost a couple "chunks". I sent them a picture and they sent me a replacement at no charge to me.

@rsislandcrafts 4 жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry. I’ve heard that laying your warped mat on your driveway on a warm sunny day sometimes helps. The sun will heat the mat and your driveway underneath and that will sometimes warm It enough to straighten back out. It may not be perfect or It may not work at all. I also suggest googling how to fix a warped self healing cutting mat. Someone may have some additional tips. If all else fails and you can’t fix It then see if there are any sections that are still semi flat. You can cut those pieces out and have a few mini mats. I hope you are able to unwrap It. 🤞🤞🤞🤞

@@rsislandcrafts You just have to make sure you do it when the mat and fibres are DRY... because when they get wet, because they are fibre, they expand... and then it'll be more difficult getting those fibres out of the grooves cut into the mat. (I would try not to let it get as "matted" --- no pun intended --- as your green one is before I tried to clean it off. That'd make it less difficult for the erasers to get rid of the fibres!)

bonnie musselman Hi Bonnie! The small green Olga mat feels sturdier. I love my reversible blue/pink Fiskars Donna Dewberry mat. It lasted for several years before It started to show any wear. Fiskars replaced It at no charge because small “chunks” were coming off. The new grey one is taking a bit to get used to. I thought the lighter grey squares in the center were cool but when I try to line my ruler up and trim fabric or blocks It makes It hard to see the lines in my ruler. It’s also showing the cut lines already. So....I love Fiskars return policy but I prefer the Olga mats. I don’t know if Olga has a return policy though. In my opinion I feel that the Olga mats may last longer. By the way, I buy my mats from Michael’s usually because the prices are sometimes less than JoAnns. RsIslandCrafts - Robin, thanks for your assessment. My Fiskars was a tri-fold mat, but the three pieces have separated. I’m thinking of taping them back together on the wrong side and keeping it as a spare. My rotary cutter is a Fiskars also and I’ve never been too impressed with it. When I can, I will try the Olfa mat and cutter. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my question. ❤️

Several years ago I came across an amazing deal on a 3 piece olfa mat that is held together with clips. bit.ly/2NuDT1O I definitely didn't pay anywhere near that much. Anyway, what I was thinking is maybe you can buy those clips to hold your mat together? If the actual mats are still usable. Maybe you can get a little more time out of the mats until you can buy some new ones. I wonder if fiskars would replace your mats like they did mine? It seems that if the folds wore away they might.

When I first got a "self healing mat" about 20 years ago (which is still going good as new) they had instructions to use acetone or metho to clean which I use the acetone version but before I do I always rub the mat with the batting fabric it seems to cling to it self If you don't like my idea google ofla company see what they say

Would it not be better to cut batting on layers old news papers or heavy cardboards (to protect the table and save the cutting mat)?
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. This is an old cutting mat that’s not longer good for cutting fabric but still useful for cutting things like batting, fleece, or felt. This video showed an extreme version of a dirty cutting mat. If an eraser can clean this mat then an eraser should do a good job cleaning a cutting mat where someone only trimmed the batting from one quilt.

@@rsislandcrafts Have you ever washed your mats? I understand that they do dry out over time and quit healing. My cutting table top is plastic. I wash down my mats with windex and warm water using an old terry wash cloth on top of that table. I get them wet on both sides and let them sit for a time before drying them off. I give the ones I washed a day to rest before using them again. That is just me.

Soak your mat in a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar to 1 gallon room temperature water, preferably in the tub so it can lay flat, for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then give it a light scrub with a very soft brush...like a mushroom brush. Cutting mats love hydration!

I've seen that too. They say it keeps it conditioned so it doesn't dry out and get brittle. It's very humid here in SW Florida so we don't have that problem. Now the sun will dry things out and make them brittle but I keep my curtains closed in my craft room most of the year.

This is one of my first mats. I didn’t know what I was doing back then and didn’t know It was okay to flip the mat 🤷‍♀️ After I bought a new mat I used this one for the fibrous stuff. Many mats are reversible. You cut on one side until it’s worn out then flip It over to a brand new clean side.

When fuzz and fiber are left in a mat then It can’t heal itself. We’re supposed to clean our mats after each use. This mat is so old I clean It when it’s too fuzzy.
